133 lbs | No. 4 Luke Pletcher (Ohio State) def. Casey Cobb (Navy) | D, 7-4; TS: 20-9

Even the Buckeyes know the deal. But, they appear to be marketing is as toughness.
“Picking up where he left off during the 2017-18 season, Luke Pletcher grinded out a 7-4 decision over Casey Cobb at 133 pounds. Eighteen of his 30 wins a year ago came by three points or less.”

Offseason Catch Up thread

Its not a stretch to think that there will be folks venturing back to the board in the coming weeks with the start of the new season upon us.

Instead of endless threads about this or that, which most regulars know, how about trying something different.

So I was thinking we should have a catch all thread that can be read and bring someone up to speed in a couple minutes?????????????????

Nickal vs Conel

I realize that it's still over a month away but why not talk about the most intriguing matchup of the first match of the season?
Bo moving up a weight and right off the bat faces a monster. Is Conel the strongest 197 out there? Certainly right up there.
How do people see this playing out?
Bo by major? Tech? Fall? Dec? Will Bo go gangbusters from the start and go for a huge move to make a statement?
Let's hear it...how does this go down?
Roar Lions Roar!!!

Jan Johnson earns Scholarship!!!!!!!

https://www.blackshoediaries.com/20...e-linebacker-jan-johnson-receives-scholarship

Just saw this so sorry if it was previously posted. I did have a few questions for any "insiders" that might have knowledge....

I have seen pictures of Cael and PSU wrestlers at some football practices in the past. Obviously Franklin is a fan and is seen at the dual meets often and usually there is a contingent of wrestlers at the home football games per social media. Does anyone know if Cael has been called on to help the football team? Handfighting, leverage, etc.?
Also always wondered if Jan has ever eluded to the correlation of earning the starting spot after walking on the football team had anything to do with his time spent in the wrestling room.

Can't wait for Nov 11th!!!!!!!!!

FC/OT: Oscar Bait 2018 - Neil Armstrong pic 'First Man'.....

Got dazzling reviews at the Venice Film Festival (BBC gave it Five Stars) and looks like another hit for young director Damien Chazelle. Stars Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy, based on the book by James R. Hansen. Sounds like NASA and the Armstrong family were vital to ensuring the film's authenticity.

The film, based on James R Hansen’s book, traces Armstrong’s journey from family tragedy to the moon landing and what the NASA technicians and astronauts endured along the way.

Writer Josh Singer, who won an Oscar for penning 2015’s Best Picture winner Spotlight (a film that also premiered on the Lido), credited Armstrong’s family for helping the filmmakers get “underneath who Neil was” which helped get at “the human as opposed to the icon.”

Gosling said in researching the intensely private Armstrong. “I’ve never had more help in my life on a film… Whether it was Neil’s sons or his late ex-wife Janet or Neil’s sister, his childhood friends… NASA opened the door to the facilities. Neil was a very famously introspective quiet humble person so the challenge was to honor that but also to create windows into what he might be or had been experiencing emotionally at the time.”

Gosling also learned a lesson. “I thought what I should do was learn how to fly.” But not too long in, when the instructor told him to take the plane into a controlled stall, “I thought in that moment, ‘This is a terrible idea and there was a reason why Neil Armstrong was destined to be one of the greatest pilots and I’m not.’ In that moment, I realized something about Neil. It’s a certain kind of person that will get into a plane and intentionally push it to its breaking point for the sole purpose of pushing our aeronautics forward.”

To achieve authentic sound, the team used actual X15 suits and the helmets of real astronauts at the time. They also re-created tiny space capsules that are faithful to the originals. Jason Clarke, who plays Apollo astronaut Eddie White, called the experience of shooting in them “surreal.”

FLR Short: PSU vs. Iowa Whiteboard War, last 10 years

285: Dane Erekson (IA) over Nick Nevills (PSU)

They had it 6-4, PSU, in matches. The final scored varied, based on bonus, but the average was 20-12, PSU.

It's worth a listen.

TV
Track is broadcasting and charging $29.99 for the tournament, but it's also included in the $49.00 "Season" pass. (What's a "season" you ask? Good luck figuring that out on Track's site, I couldn't. Track provides a list of events included in a season that range in date from Feb 2017 through Dec 2018, which would seem like more than one "season" by most definitions but it's not clear to me if I sign up now whether I'd need to buy another "season" a few months from now).

Penn State Endowment Returns 7.8% in 2018 (spoiler: that's not good)

The investment portfolio for Penn State University’s endowment returned 7.8% for fiscal year 2018, missing its benchmark of 9.0%, and falling below the 8.3% median return of universities as measured by Cambridge Associates. Last year, the endowment returned 12.6%.

The performance is among the lowest reported by other major public universities so far this year. For example, University of Virginia, University of Texas, Michigan State, and University of California reported returns of 11.4%, 11.27%, 11.1%, and 8.9% this year, respectively.

Cenzo and 165 predictions

Despite wild rumors that V. Joseph now weighs 2,300 pounds; that he will not be able to certify at 165 this year (barring gastric plication aka stomach sewing or surgical amputation of multiple limbs); and that he needs to be moved around campus with a heavy duty crane while he gnashes on Skittles, Ben and Jerry's ice cream, and cotton candy, here are are FLO's (specifically Andrew Spey's) predictions for the weight (below)

Will Cenzo make weight? Whom will he take on an inside-trip this year? Can the finals be all an PA affair between V.J. and bad-boy-turned-solid-citizen Chance Marsteller? Will newcomer Mekhi Lewis present a problem? And what of Evan Wick's long limbs and crazy cradling? Does another Joseph, namely Joseph Smith (founder of Mormonism but reincarnated as OK State son of wrestling god, John Smith) fall all the way to Round of 12? Stay tuned, same Bat (or Big Ten) Channel for answers as the Wrestling Season Turns.

1st: Vincenzo Joseph, Penn State

2nd: Chance Marsteller, Lock Haven

3rd: Mekhi Lewis, Virginia Tech

4th: Evan Wick, Wisconsin

5th: Alex Marinelli, Iowa

6th: Logan Massa, Michigan

7th: Bryce Steiert, Northern Iowa

8th: Isaiah White, Nebraska

R12: Joseph Smith, Oklahoma State

R12: Jonathan Chavez, Cornell

R12: Branson Ashworth, Wyoming

R12: Connor Flynn, Missouri

OT: Rocket carrying space station crew fails in mid air, crew safe

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/tech...-mid-air-crew-safe/ar-BBOdWcb?ocid=spartandhp

BAIKONUR COSMODROME, Kazakhstan, Oct 11 (Reuters) - A booster rocket carrying a Soyuz spacecraft with a Russian and U.S. astronaut on board headed for the International Space Station failed mid-air on Thursday, forcing the crew to make an emergency landing.

The rocket was carrying U.S. astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexei Ovchinin. Footage from inside the Soyuz showed the two men being shaken around at the moment the failure occurred, with their arms and legs flailing.

The rocket was launched from the Soviet-era cosmodrome in Baikonur, Kazakhstan. A Reuters reporter who observed the launch from around 1 km away said it had gone smoothly in its initial stages and that the failure of the booster rockets must have occurred at higher altitude.

Russian news agencies reported that the crew had safely made an emergency landing and were in radio contact and that rescuers were en route to pick them up.

So Maybe it Wasn’t JoeMo

Watched MSU beat Aurburn last night and as they were running out the clock in the last ten minutes, they consistently snapped the ball with less than three seconds on the play clock.

This is in comparison to us snapping with 10-17 seconds. I assumed it might have been JoeMo but maybe it’s Rahne or Franklin all along. We have a chance to make a run here at the whole thing and if we want to be “Elite” we need to cleanup all of the little stupid mistakes on the coaching side as well.
