Morning Call: Legalize pot in Pennsylvania? Highly unlikely anytime soon (link)

From an outsider's perspective, why is PA so slow in coming around on so many things? When we were kids we used to have to make the trip to Ohio to get fireworks and drink under 21. Why can't you buy beer and wine in a regular store? That place hasn't changed a lick. It's backward. And given its fiscal woes it's got to be one of the most mismanaged states in the country. It's like the government cannot get out of its own way.

Bo’s post national speech is already working

Bo’s emotional statements on ESPN about “That’s what we do!” When discussing PSU wrestling and winning has worked in Robbie Howard.

Here is his quote - “There are very few things I like less than losing, but I just love to win," he said. "That was the big thing: Penn State wins big duals, Penn State wins big matches and Penn State wins big tournaments. That is going to be the plan going into college."

Harvard seeking to ban fraternities, sororities and single sex social org's.

I just received this e-mail from the CEO of my college fraternity. (I hope it comes through, as stuff I receive via e-mail sometimes does not when I try to copy and paste it here.) It indicates that Harvard University is taking punitive action against any Harvard students who join fraternities, sororities or single sex social organizations. This seems like an infringement of students' First Amendment free association rights and/or a violation of Title IX.. I wonder if it will stand a court challenge.

Have any other fraternity members out there received a similar notice? I am assuming that many, if not most, National Intrafraternity Conference (NIC) fraternities have sent (or will send) a similar notice to their members. They have apparently formed a website (standuptoharvard.org) as part of their campaign.

Dear ________:

Our right to brotherhood is in jeopardy!

Today, Pi Kappa Phi stands in support of a group of sororities, fraternities and students who filed a pair of lawsuits challenging Harvard’s sanctions policy that punishes students who join off-campus, single-sex social organizations. Even though we do not have a chapter at this specific school, it is critical that we stand together to protect members’ right to shape their own leadership and social paths.

Before Harvard announced its policy, one in four undergraduates belonged to sororities, fraternities or all-women’s or all-men’s final clubs—opportunities protected by Title IX and the First Amendment. Starting this fall, members of our organizations are, in a word, blacklisted—stripped of opportunities to hold leadership roles in Harvard organizations and athletic teams and to obtain post-graduate fellowships and scholarships influenced or controlled by Harvard.

We can’t sit back and allow Harvard to set a precedent that could be followed by others. This policy blatantly infringes on the rights of Harvard students.

Personal Investing

I would like to get some advice regarding online trading platforms (I.e. ETrade, Scottrade, etc...) in order to personally invest in the stock market. In addition, I would like to hear if you recommend investing in any specific companies, index funds, mutual funds, specific industries, or bonds. I am not looking for insider information at all, but rather certain investments or investment vehicles you have used in the past/currently use that you would recommend to others (I would be comfortable with medium risk and low risk investments).

Before anyone asks Informational questions, I do max out my 401k plan contribution each year, I keep excess cash in a high interest online savings account at current market rates, I have restricted and vested stock in my company, life insurance for both my wife and I, and I do have a good understanding of financial principles. In summary, I have some excess cash that I want to personally invest in the stock market so I am looking for ideas on how and what to invest in. Thank you.

OT: hearing loss/tinnitis

Haven't had a hearing test for a very long time, but began experiencing tinnitis about a decade ago, and I'm definitely experiencing some hearing loss.

Been reading online reviews on local ENT and hearing specialists/practices, but the reviews haven't been that helpful. For those who may have one or both of these conditions and have sought help, do you have any recommendations (or warnings) for my search?

TIA.

Soccer guys -Pulisic!

It has been lost in all the World Series hubbub, but did anyone catch Dortmund's last CL game against Sporting Lisbon where Pulisic got a start. I'm halfway through my recording and pretty much every touch he's making something happen. He is what we've been waiting for - no more hustle guys with the touch of a blacksmith in the midfield.

He had a Bergkamp-esque take from a dead run that created their first goal and a beautiful tiki-taka sequence with Goetze that resulted in him hammering the crossbar.

The sharks are already circling him (e.g. Real Madrid). I actually think he'd fit in perfectly with Barca, but I want him playing first team for now.

Point of Emphasis for this college wrestling season

I had not seen this previously discussed; my apologies if it was.

Most of you are aware that I'm friendly with several college wrestling refs. I saw some of them this evening, and one of them was talking about working an Open this past weekend. A non-college ref asked him about rule changes this season, and he indicated that changes are generally done on a two-year cycle in college, but there is a major point of emphasis this season -- one I think you guys will really like.

Supposedly, all college refs have been informed that a major point of emphasis this year is hands to the face. Wrestlers are allowed to put their hands on an opponent's forehead. However, there is basically a triangle between the eyebrows and the chin. If a wrestler puts his hand in the triangle area of an opponent while on their feet, there is not supposed to be any warning -- the ref is supposed to stop the action and award a point to the wrestler whose opponent placed their hand in the face triangle area.

Per the college ref, the college ref community has also been informed that if they do not enforce this point of emphasis, they will lose assignments. In short, this truly is a major point of emphasis.

As hands to the face has been frequently discussed on this board in past seasons, I have no doubt that you guys will be analyzing/discussing how effectively this point of emphasis is enforced this season.
