Renteria to Iowa

I don't know where to begin, lol.

How many 141s can one program have with all this over-recruiting;

Where is the money coming from, I thought they played by the rules and were tapped out yet DeSanto and now Renteria are transferring in;

Iowa's room is fast becoming the half way house of college wrestling. They should of kept PDIII around as an adviser.

Proposed Changes after watching the tournament

If got several I'd like to see but I'll start with one for now. Let's discuss and add additional changes you'd like to see...

Put the scale right next to the scorers table and have the wrestlers weigh-in RIGHT before they step on the mat to wrestle. Simple actually...each wrestler would come out from the tunnel and step on the scale. The official would verify, or not, they meet weight and send them out to wrestle.

There were serious discrepancies between the sizes of many wrestlers throughout the tournament. They've got to be hurting themselves. As a side, I suspect the Hall -Valencia result would have been different.

OT: Local high School lacrosse player with 1000 face offs won...

my nephew plays lacrosse for Central York and I was at his county championship game tonight. I’m not well versed in lacrosse rules, but am learning. My brother in law had previously mentioned that they had a player who was great at faceoffs. Tonight, towards the end of the game, it was announced that he had won his 1000th faceoff in his career. I’m trying to do the math, but even if he started as a sophomore, that would be an impressive record. From what I saw tonight, he won just about every face off. Is this really an significant accomplishment?

Tatoo's - yes or no, when is it too much?

Question for the board. Sitting at swim team practice yesterday watching my kid swim. Women next to me is sitting there. She appears to be early 20's. Has shorts on. On her right outer thigh is a tatoo. Tatoo is very large, goes from underneath her shorts nearly down to about 1-2" above her kneecap. I would say probably a good 8" long and the entire width of her outer thigh. The tatoo is of a skeleton skull with the brain part of the skull having some design that was colored that looked like either an outer space or underwater landscape.

So i am not sure who would find that attractive. A massive tatoo on your entire outer thigh and of a skull? What am i missing.

Current college hierarchy?

Based on the results of the last 8 years, I'd say:

Top tier:
1. PSU
2. tOSU

Second tier - The next 7 in no particular order:
Iowa, NC State, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Cornell, Michigan and VT
These schools are pretty consistently near the top and solidly in the top 10. Some of these schools will occasionally have an off year but quickly return to relevance.

Third tier (on the fringe of top ten) - Nebraska, Minnesota, Lehigh
These schools are usually at or near the top ten and often have national title contenders. But they can't seem to crack the solid 9 above them on a consistent basis. Minnesota has dropped into this tier recently and has been replaced by NC State.

Fourth tier (aiming for top ten or fighting to get there): Wisconsin, Illinois, NW, Rutgers, South Dakota State, North Carolina, Edinboro.
These schools have occasional standout individuals and flirt with top 10 status but can't stay there if they achieve it. Pretty much the 12-20 place teams.

Fifth tier - pretty much everyone else. Not relevant for title discussion or top ten status. Most likely to move up are Oklahoma and Iowa State based on their traditions.

Some ruminations on Rosie Grier

today is the CA primary election, and tomorrow is the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. This got me thinking a good deal today about RFK, and the events surrounding his shooting by Sirhan Sirhan.

If I recall correctly, as a result of Kennedy's shooting, the US passed a law that provided Secret Service protection to presidential candidates.

Rosie Grier was a friend of RFK, and served as a personal bodyguard for the candidate during his Presidential primary campaign. On the night of the shooting, just after RFK announced victory in the CA primary, Rosie was guarding RFK's wife, Ethel. My recollection is that Rosie Grier, along with former decathlete Rafer Johnson and writer George Plimpton were the ones that primarily tackled and disarmed Sirhan Sirhan after he shot RFK. (I might have to pull off the shelf my book about RFK by Evan Thomas. Mr. Thomas goes in to extensive detail about the events that took place in The Ambassador Hotel before and after the shooting, and Rosie's exact actions after the shooting are detailed.)

Rosie is currently 85, and will turn 86 in a month. His last season as a PSU player was in 1954. As such, I don't think there are many folks on this board, or PSU fans, that can say they saw Rosie play for PSU.

He was drafted by the NFL New York Giants in 1955, and was an All-Pro for them in 1956, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, and 1962. Before the 1963 season, he was traded to the LA Rams. With the Rams, he was a part of the Fearsome Foursome, with Deacon Jones, Merlin Olsen, and Lamar Lundy. (An interesting note -- he was the oldest member of the Fearsome Foursome, but he's the only member of that elite defensive line that's still alive.)

His football career ended in 1967, when he suffered a torn Achilles.

After retirement, he went on a Bob Hope tour, and then tried his hand at acting, appearing on numerous episodes of TV shows, as well as several movies (mostly in the late '60s and '70s).

He became a Protestant minister in 1983, and shortly thereafter founded a nonprofit to help inner-city teens.

I think the last major publicity that involved Rosie was when he visited with OJ while he was in jail, following his arrest for the murders of Nicole Simpson and her friend, Ronald Goldman. Rosie visited OJ a number of times while he was in jail, and was called to testify at OJ's trial. As conversations between an inmate and a clergyman are protected under CA law, Rosie provided no details about the conversations he had with OJ.

Actually, I think Rosie also made some news last year, when he announced that he would run for Governor of California. However, he dropped out of the race several months after he made the announcement.

Just some random musings by me about a former PSU player.

If you have any Rosie memories, or stories, feel free to post them as replies

Kate Spade, Suicide..Yikes

Things are really off the rails. Famous fashion icon, Kate Spade, apparently committed suicide (with one of her scarves) by hanging. She was 55.

Man, if you are considering this option...just try to make it one more day and make a few phone calls to friends. An acquaintance committed suicide over the Memorial Day weekend, which has set many in my industry in a tizzy.

FC: Televangelist asks followers to buy him $54 MM private jet.

See the link below. From the article:

"(CNN) -- A prosperity gospel televangelist from Louisiana says Jesus has asked him to buy a new private jet. And wouldn't you know it, Jesus has real nice taste in planes.

Jesse Duplantis, leader of Jesse Duplantis Ministries and the owner of three other private jets, is asking his followers to chip in so his ministry can purchase a brand new Dassault Falcon 7X, which runs about $54 million.

In a video recently published on his website, Duplantis says the planes get him closer to the Lord -- both literally and figuratively -- and he had a divine conversation in which Jesus asked for the new aircraft by name.

"It was one of the greatest statements the Lord ever told me, he said, 'Jesse do you want to come up where I'm at?'" the minister says. "'I want you to bleed me for a Falcon 7X.'"

By "bleed," Duplantis -- er, Jesus -- apparently meant "ask for donations.""

Does anyone hear the following terms where they live...

or are they local to where I live, the Delaware Valley? I think most of them are, but wanted to make sure.

Hoagie - called submarine sandwich elsewhere, or hero, or in the case of New Orleans, a Po'boy.

Skitch - called bumper rides in other places - when you hang on to the back of a UPS truck and let it it pull you down along the snow and ice on the street during the winter months. Easy to do in this area, because they never seem to plow the roads properly.

Jimmies- those little candy items that you put on top of soft ice cream. Called sprinkles in most other places.

Skeev - when something is distasteful to you, you "skeev" it. Not sure what others call it, but "skeev" is fairly descriptive.

Shore - not just the beach, but the boardwalk, horseshoe crabs, dragon flies and the beach tags.

Shoobies - those people who go to the Shore but are not from the Shore. Applies mostly to people from west of the Delaware River.

Water Ice - shaved ice with flavored and colored sugar water poured on top. Probably called Italian Ice everywhere else. (Note: appropriate pronunciation of water is "wuhter").

My morning's work is done.

Grossest thing you've ever eaten.

I'm not one to stray from the norm.... I will try stuff but I can't really think about what I'm eating or I'll puke. So anyway, I teach Sailors and Marines how to paint aircraft and in class today someone asked me if I'd ever had scrapple and head cheese. Of course my answer was "no". So I have this Filipino kid in my class and he asks me if I've ever had balut. I kinda knew what it was....but then I Googled it. If you don't know what it is... DO NOT Google balut. It's basically a chicken egg with a baby chicken in it.. I think the most adventurous I've gotten was menudo when I was in El Paso. Anyone got some gross stuff they eat??

Junior WTT

Starts May 18 at 10 am Central time in Rochester, MN

Not many entries listed on Flo yet, but there are a few PSU guys and a handful more PA wrestlers.
As of 5/11/

65 kg - Nick Lee
70 kg - Brady Berge
70 kg - Jarod Verkleeren
70 kg - Loaded again with the above two, Austin O'Conner, Brock Mauller & Jacori Teemer

79kg - Michael Labriola & Trent Hidlay

That's all so far. No Joe Lee. Was hoping he would enter. He finished 2nd at last year's US Open (70kg) and 3rd at Fargo (160). Not sure where he is in terms of weight now.
