Hazleton was another former coal mining town slipping into decline until a wave of Latinos arrived. It would not be an overstatement to say a tidal wave. In 2000 Hazleton’s 23,399 residents were 95 percent non-Hispanic white and less than 5 percent Latino. By 2016 Latinos became the majority, composing 52 percent of the population, while the white share plunged to 44 percent.

“We joke about it and say we are in the minority now,” says Bob Sacco, a bartender at A&L Lounge, a tavern on a street now mainly filled with Latino-owned storefronts. “They took over the city. We joke about it all the time, but it’s more than a joke.”

Beyond JoePa: A closer look at the second mile

How a children's charitable foundation founded by Jerry Sandusky swiftly became a house of horrors for underprivileged boys is the true story that lies underneath the Penn State scandal that led to the firing of beloved football legend Joe Paterno. The spotlight should have shined much brighter than it has thus far. Was Joe Paterno essentially the sacrificial lamb to keep the emphasis off a much greater scandal? The answers may get lost in the haze of politics and special interests but there are many good men and women that proceed to ask the hard questions. Not surprisingly, the MSM proceeds to be MIA, especially when it matters most.

The Second Mile's Executive Director, Jack Raykovitz, is a particular person of interest. A Psychologist who headed the agency for at-risk youth for 28 years, Raykovitz had knowledge of Sandusky's shenanigans since the very beginning, including two separate incidents in 1998 and 2001 in which he had showered with young boys. In his testimony regarding the 2001 episode, which was originally reported by graduate assistant Mike McQueary, Raykovitz stated that he informed several high-ranking board members of the incident and advised Sandusky to wear swim trunks when showering with children. This shocking admission goes a long way in confirming how negligent those charged with proper oversight of the foundation truly were. In 1998, when Sandusky was accused of similar behavior, a 6 week investigation ensued. Unfortunately, the DA on the case, Ray Gricar, concluded the allegations to be unsubstantiated based on a lack of evidence.

As per Pennsylvania law, if anyone associated with a child care agency is under investigation for child abuse, the agency and the welfare department are to work together to develop a written safety plan until the investigation is complete. Tragically, these steps were never initiated; a reality that defies logic outside the realm of cover and complicity.

Raykovitz, in particular, should have been a primary player in the whole investigation as he was the head person directly responsible for the safety of the children and the integrity of the foundation. Outside Sandusky, any investigation into child abuses against the boys of Second Mile should have began and ended directly with him, his staff, and the few executive board members in the know, as a wall of secrecy hovered over the charity like a dark cloud. But ultimately, all we got was Paterno under a microscope, as is the case throughout the newly released HBO depiction of the scandal starring Al Pacino as the much beleaguered JoePa. The Second Mile officially ceased operations after transferring its programs and remaining assets to Arrow Child & Family Ministries. However, many questions still remain...

I've tried to boil this down to the simplest form..... because if they knew what was really going on, Penn State Students and their Families would be marching upon Old Main (and Board of Trustees meetings) with torches and pitchforks....... and they should be:

PSU is very good this season. MD is crazy good, with only 1 OT loss on the year.

It's early in the game, but UMD got the 1st goal, and then won the ensuing draw.

I know at least 1 of the refs (perhaps more -- I've only seen a close-up on 1), and she's excellent, so the officiating should be good.

PSU is coming off a loss this past weekend against NW.

And while I was keying this in, UMD got another goal, so they are up 2-0.

Need some input and can't think of a better place to get it than this board. a documentary on the hazing crisis on college campuses. Guess who’s in it? That’s right...Pulitzer Prize. So guess what that means? Penn State will be featured and she’ll get another opportunity to do what she loves more than anything else...trash her alma mater. SPM is in it too as per the commercial. It’s truly pathetic. SG can’t do ANYTHING but attack Penn State. Apparently she has no other journalistic skills - her skill set begins and ends with Penn State. A person in the conversation said there are so many things to be said after that answer. Same person who told me the other day you can't spell Penn State without Pacino.

That is all interesting information. I truthfully didn't follow the case too closely, but that seems to have a lot of information that is "shady" to say the least. I had never heard of Sandusky's charity that had so much contact with troubled youth.

And, there ladies and gentlemen is the problem Penn Staters are facing. He doesn't know about The Second Mile. I seriously doubt he is the Lone Ranger on this one. What he and hundreds of thousands of others likely know is just what the media fed them.

As Penn State Lettermen, there was never a question that one day we would see a movie made about Joe Paterno, one that showcased his impact on the game of football, on Penn State University and, on the thousands of men he coached and mentored over his 61-year career. Sadly -- and wrongly -- HBO’s ‘Paterno’ is not that movie. It has been described by producer Barry Levinson as a work of fiction, which is likely the only truth in the entire project. Incredibly, in making the movie, Levinson and his team never consulted a single person who was close to, worked with, or was coached by Joe Paterno. Not even family members or us, who undoubtedly knew him best of all. As a result, this uninformed depiction of Joe fails in every manner about the man we knew and loved. Deviously using ‘fiction’ as his shield, Levinson takes shameless liberties about the Sandusky scandal and Joe’s knowledge of it that would certainly be proven libelous if Joe were alive today. As a coach, educator and philanthropist, Joe Paterno was a positive force in our lives, molding us not only to win games, but to win in life. His character, integrity, and moral compass will live on in us long after the ill-gotten ratings of this reckless attempt at entertainment fades away.

Seriously, neither my wife nor I have received a ballot for the BOT election. According to the CDT, "Alumni who participated in the nomination process will automatically receive ballots for the general election." Well, I participated in the nomination process, and I haven't received a ballot email. Nor has my wife. Could somebody provide a link to obtain a ballot? Thanks.

I've seen "The People's Joe" and attended the Grand Experiment showing where the former lettermen talk about Joe. Both excellent, but both incomplete IMO.

I did not watch the HBO story last night. I will not. It's garbage.

What we need is a 90 minute to 2 hour documentary that covers everything the guy did right from 1950 to 2011. From the family stories of salad bar stealing to returning university pencils to the FBI investigation in the late 70s and his concern for former players to the handling of guys like Enis and Engram. There are 100 other stories that need to be detailed for the public to see.

That is what we need. Joe deserves that much.

this is a raging debate in the media, who seems to be taking the side of paying the players. a common theme is that this is now a matter of compensating poor players who are being enslaved by the system. to me this is a troubling argument.

I think if this is not addressed it will become a big problem for ADs at most D1 programs. for starters, any kind of increased comp - even if done by the players on their own, will likely raise some sort of creative lawyer argument that under Title IX the comp will have to be equalized. i think that will happen even if the money is being earned direct to players from say advertisers - even though it makes sense. a big reason so many ADs have budget issues now is Title IX entitlement costs where the big revenue sports have to carry the whole place.

if we get past that point, there will be a compensation level issue. For example, if you attend Bama, will some advertiser pay you more than say they would at UCF? it is hard to imagine that this will be an easy solution. What happens if a player is getting advertising $$$, and they become academically ineligible? what if a player gets benched for no apparent reason (we have seen this with PSU palyers already) will they lose $$$?

For me, the easy solution is just have the NBA and NFL run minor league programs like we already see for Hockey and baseball. Then a player can be drafted out of HS - not get any $$, but sign with the program of their choice. the people arguing for paying players already are saying that the players have no interest in college anyhow, so let them go pro. the NBA and NFL can bestow on these players big paydays if they want. there is no way there is $$$ to pay these players from the schools. many cannot fund their athletic depts now.

The NFL and NBA could fund scholarship $$$ for these minor league players to use in the future if they wanted. kind of a GI bill for players.

this would keep the ncaa around the student-athlete and the pro leagues running their minor league. the NCAA is not supposed to be a minor league. Emmert seems to not support the paying players idea.

what is wrong with a minor league and getting these players out of the schools where many of them are not prepared to be students anyhow. what bad thing happens?

Our 18 year old Maytag was making an awful noise. I attempt diy on anything. My possible mis-diagnosis was a bearing. The kit came and I could see it was the wrong one so I returned it. The fact that the schematic of the tranny listed dozens of parts and being 18, we just got new W&D. The dryer is nuclear, however, I hate the washer. Cycles take forever! Despite being 18, whishing we had just had it repaired!
