Wrestling starts at 11 am EDT

TV - ESPNU

Video Stream - ESPN3

Audio Stream - Byers will be available at this link:

http://www.gopsusports.com/collegesportslive/?media=550916

The audio stream is supposed to start at 10:40 pm EDT

PSU only has 1 wrestler that will be participating in Session 5. Nick Nevills will face #3 seed Ty Walz (VT) in the 285 Consolation R6. If he wins that, he'll face the winner of the Tanner Hall (ASU) - Jacob Kasper (Duke) match for 3rd place. If he loses to Walz, he'll face the loser of the aforementioned match for 5th place.

I previously indicated that I would not be available for Session 5. However, I did caution that my scheduled was in flux. It's still not solidified, but there is a better chance than I thought that I'll be there for at least part of Session 5

As always, please keep all posts about the Session, team scores, posts about non-PSU wrestler matches from the Session, etc. in this thread.

The team standings for the tournament heading into Session 5 are:

PSU - 121
Ohio St - 89.5
Ok. St. - 86
Mizzou - 81.5
Iowa - 74
Minny - 60
Cornell - 57.5
VT - 53.5
Nebraska - 50
Illini - 41.5
Lehigh - 36
Wisky - 36
Michigan - 33
ASU - 30
UVA - 29.5
S. Dakota St - 28.5
N. Iowa - 23.5
Rutgers - 21.5
Edinboro - 19.5
etc.

In a few hours, Cael will move past John Smith (5) for career coaching titles (6) and PSU will move into a tie with Oklahoma for 4th all time in team titles (7). Iowa St is in 3rd with 8 team titles.

8? I somehow feel like that lead isn't going to last. Good thing I jumped on the bandwagon or I would really feel depleted. I'm just like an Iowa fan now, so just you wait a couple of years lol. I do find it rather strange that we have piled on Minnesota, but they are closer to Iowa than Iowa is to PSU as a program right now. ISU is closer to the YMCA youth program than PSU right now.

Assuming they all stay healthy, the next 2 years PSU will field teams that could break NCAA finals team scoring records.

The Iowa Hawkeyes are next after the Cyclones, right?

Nevills vs Walz, really hope Nick can hit that low single vs the big man and wrestle for a chance at 3rd, lets go Clovis!

Yes next is the hawks. But this 6th title this year ties the post gable hawks and I think that should get some pub. What gable did is just nuts.

for those interested, ESPNU is currently showing a replay of Session 4's semifinals

If I have this right, any loss in the 1st round this morning will lower the team MAX potential by 5.5 points.

Difference between 3rd and 5th - 3 placement points
No bonus - 2 points
No advancement -.5

What are the chances Nick could clinch the title when he steps on the mat today?

So far only mats 1, 2 and 3 available on espn3. Is that all they are running for Session 5?

Nobody can ever touch what Gable did. What Gable did is like the Joe DiMaggio hitting streak, it will never be broken.

With that said, what Cael is doing in the modern sport, today, is now the Gold Standard for wrestling in the 2010's.

We might have passively clinched before then

This will be PSU's 8th National Title (1921, 1953, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017) - here is a direct citation to this at PSU's Official Athletic Website, HIT THIS HOTLINK. Essentially, this win will tie PSU with Iowa State with 8 all-time and #3 in the nation in this category behind Okie State and Iowa. Not sure, but I think we may have already passed ISU in terms of all-time Individual Championships won and All-Americans to be #3 all-time alone in these categories, but not positive on that one.

Ohio State (89.5 points) and Okie State (86 points) are the only two teams still with a mathematical chance of overtaking PSU (121 points). Not 100% sure about the scoring, but I think each win in the consolation semis is worth 3.5 points (3 for placement + 0.5 for advancement). An additional win in the 3rd/4th place match is worth another 1 point. Winner of the 7th/8th place match gets 1 point.

Okie State:
125 - (8) Piccininni vs (10) Mueller (Virginia). I can see Piccininni winning this. Winner gets Gilman/Dance winner.
133- (3) Brock vs (5) Micic (Michigan). Good match-up, but I like how Micic has been going. Winner gets Tomasello/Montoya winner.
141 - N/A; (1) Heil in finals
149 - N/A; (2) Collica eliminated
157 - (5) Smith vs (7) Palacio (Cornell). Seems like a toss-up. Winner gets Berger/Kemerer winner.
165 - (9) Rogers vs (2) Massa. Definitely like Massa in this one. Winner gets Jordan/Lewis winner.
174 - (7) Crutchmer vs unseeded Residori (SIU-Edwardsville) in the 7th/8th place match. Resider earlier beat Crutchmer in the championship bracket. I think Crutch wins this time.
184 - (4) Boyd vs (7) Dudley (Nebraska). Another toss-up. Winner gets Brooks/Martin winner.
197 - (6) Weigel vs (4) Haught (VaTech). I think Haught takes this one. Winner gets Moore/Studebaker winner.
285 - N/A; (6) Schafer eliminated

Ohio State
125 - N/A; unseeded Rodriguez eliminated
133 - (1) Tomasello vs (7) Montoya (Nebraska). NATO the clear favorite here. Winner gets Brock/Micic winner.
141- N/A; (12) Pletcher eliminated
149 - (4) Jordan vs (7) Thomson (Northern Iowa). Jordan favored here. Winner gets Sorenson/Chisko winner.
157 - N/A; no wrestler
165 - N/A; unseeded Burcher eliminated
174 - N/A; (3) Jordan in finals
184 - (6) Martin vs (3) Brooks. I'll take Brooks to beat Martin for 3rd time this season. Winner gets Dudley/Boyd winner.
197 - (3) Moore vs (7) Studebaker (Nebraska). Moore the clear favorite here. Winner gets Haught/Weigel winner
285 - N/A; (1) Snyder in finals

Well you haven't passed Minnesota in dual results or third world tshirt sales so don't get too cocky.

I hope you, your best friend, and your dad enjoy another great day together watching wrestling.

I'll be toasting a Connemara to you guys tonight as PSU brings it home.

Huh? Why do you say that? Gable won 7 of his first 8 at Iowa (he was named HC after Iowa won it's 2nd all-time and back-to-back National Championship in 1976 under Gary Kurdelmeier, the guy who hired Gable). Gable did not win his first year as HC in 1977 and then won 9 straight. Cael has won 6 in his first 8 years at PSU, which is very comparable. Gable retired in 1997 after a 21 year career having won 15 National Championships. The driving factor to whether Cael gets to 15 Career National Championships appears to be how long he wants to stay coaching....but at this point and at this rate, 15 National Championships appears to be well within Cael's grasp at PSU (which is the precise reason he said he choose to leave his alma mater, ISU, and come to PSU -- i.e., because the "unique advantages" that PSU offered would allow him to build an unassailable dynasty and win championships....his words have proven prophetic and I think he's a long way from being done at this point. To use Cael's words, he still looks like he's "having fun out there" and with the kids!).

But claiming Cael will never touch Gable's accomplishments at Iowa is a bit premature at this point imho.

Mueller forfeited to Piccininni

Gilmna defeated Dance, 5-2

Dance will finish 5th, as Mueller will forfeit that match as well

NaTo defeated Montoya, 4-1

Micic defeated Kaid Brock, 10-4
