2020 Southern Scuffle Thread

Goodness, PSUNATTY--did you ever wrestle? That was Beard's 6th match in 2 days--with 5 of his 6 matches being against ranked guys (3 of them in the top 8!). I thought he wrestled very well. Yes, he tired at the end, not surprising under the circumstances. I salute Beard for a great effort over the 2 days! Sorry if I seem critical, but most of us have no idea what these guys go through!

Agreed. Better conditioning and he could/should have won both. He is very close but I like that he is getting another year. It's probably hard to mentally motivate yourself to be in A1 condition on a redshirt year anyway.

Since our guys were all acting coaches these past 2 days. I imagine this conversation happening.

Coach Starocci to Joe: "Great tournament young man. We obviously have some work to do, clear your schedule Monday and be ready to go at 9 AM"
Joe: "You're going to ride me until I escape?"
Coach Starocci: "You got it!"

Nice work men! Have to say watching these three the last two days have been the highlight of collegiate season so far. Our room is Nails tough!

Bo lost to Andy McCulley of Wyoming at Southern Scuffles his redshirting freshman year.

I'd say our guys are where they need to be ;)
I agree. No coach and wrestling top guys for the first time in a great tournament? I really think some people get too worked up over a loss by one of our true freshman. None of them have ever been in a tournament like this before. They may lose a battle or two but they win win the war and a championship! They are doing going to be great and have great success at PS. All 3 were excellent! Great job!!

I did not watch any of the scuffle but followed via this post.
I would think Penn State coaches would be very pleased with the 3 guys.
Most of the matches that were lost by Lee ,and Beard were simaler in that they got early lead and could not build on it. Their mat skills will improve. In the future, when they get that early takedown it becomes 2 minutes of misery for their opponent. We watched Zain,Nolf, V.J. and Bo improvement where they used the first period to set the tone for what would come later. It's a process that will be developed.

a lot of talk about the tan shirts conditioning and losing matches in the late periods after getting leads in the 1st.

I think the talk is warranted, as it is what it is. But I think gas tank issues are expected in a grey/red/tan shirt.

Those times in my mind should be about adjusting to college life, getting ahead in credits and majors and yes practicing (dare I say going through the motions).

Im ok with that. the starters need the attention and focus of the staff. Plus with the NCAA "rules" I dont think you get top flight conditioning without extra work outside traditional practice time. so again, if you are concentrating on the student part during this tan shirt and not so much the athlete part outside traditional practice that could create some conditioning/gas tank issues. so be it.

That said;
We saw aggression. - check
We saw an array of attacks - check
We saw hustle - check
We saw great top work - check
We saw a need to work on bottom - check (normal transition from HS to D1 for just about everyone)

I think we are in a very good space.

I also think its pretty cool these guys took on this challenge. Doing what they did is not normal and they and their families are to be commended.

All good, imo. The effort was high overall both days, and while some may find this hard to understand, a loss is a win if a wrestler learns from it, and is driven to improve. Pretty confident that those that lost will be over the losses in a day or two, and back at it, in what the coaches call "the process". Congrats guys!!

Beard is a guy I'm very curious to watch going forward. He is so good now I think he will be a 4 time AA if he just has normal progression on bottom and touches up his neutral defense. He looks like there is still a ton of things to improve upon that could raise his ceiling into the Bo/Jason/Zain/Mark/Cenzo arena. I think he holds his breath during scramble/exertion moments. I bet the coaches are working with him to breathe more while wrestling. This problem is pretty common in young guys. Shape is often a matter of correct breathing more than a guy actually being out of shape. I expect we will see Beard develop more heavy handed snaps in the near future as well. He has full access to Varner and Bo who are two of the best snap guys in my memory bank. All of the raw material seems to be present to create a monster!

Beard has all of the tools but his conditioning could use some work, and he is a little sloppy in scrambles. He can tighten things up this year. He gassed against Balsek as well. I think he did want to work more of the bottom which is where he needs to focus. Pretty strong on his feet, with good his but his defense was off once he got tired. Had he selected top in the second he could have worked for another turn and padded his riding time. I am pleased with where he is as a freshman but he is not ready this year, let's hope Shak is during on all cylinders later this month, and I look forward to next year when all of our kids in training hit the big time.
Agree. I was about to post the same idea. Beard looks super on his feet through 4 minutes. Then, some fatigue sets in. Not able to fire off his great shots, and a hair slow in defending shots. But, that's all it takes. IMHO, he needs to run 8 miles a day. When he wrestles the last 3 minutes like he does the first 4 minutes he is a top 5 wrestler.

JPW... I keep a lookout for your posts. They are worth study.

It is very common in Michigan...…..as is anything dealing with snot :)

I heard it is considered a food group

I know...…..."That Snot Funny"

At least in Michigan it is.

I have a son who was an outstanding high school wrestler for a couple of periods per match. He quite literally could wrestle with anyone for about 3 minutes, but he had some sports related anxiety and for whatever reason, I simply couldn't get him to breath properly during his matches. He had an excellent record overall, but he lost to all of the better wrestlers in the final 3 minutes of each match because of this issue and as you've pointed out, it's common with young guys and makes a huge difference. He also ran track and I'd constantly shriek during the 100 yard dash or 110 high hurdles, "breathe Ben, breathe". I'll never forget him smoking the state champion 100 guy for the first 50 yards of the race before getting smoked himself at the end of the race.

Carter wrestles with quickness, strength and a wee bit of meanness. Great scuffle for him!
Agreed. Carter is one tough dude. Quick on TD's, and then when stopped has the strength (and that bit of meanness) to push thru it. A very bright future in store, and will enjoy watching him do it in a PSU singlet!

That had to be frustrating for him and you alike! It is very hard to break the habit of holding your breath when you scramble. I'm guessing a sprint is much like a scramble. The only way I have seen it work is to make the guy hold his breath as long as he can from the bottom position and the live go begins as soon as he lets the breath out. The need to gasp air starts creating the habit of breathing when you need air (or so the theory goes). These young men all work so hard you know the shape is pretty much always going to be there, but without enough oxygen even the most well conditioned athlete will wear down quickly. It makes you wrestle from a mountain top while your opponent is at sea level. I'm just speculating with Beard, but it would explain some things.

If he develops paws like Matt Brown the world is in trouble.

what about him beating Phillipi and Sykora ..

Phillippi had a poor tournament overall. And educate yourself about Sykora's career before you get too giddy. 2-1, 4-2, 4-3 and 5-4 requires a certain level of desperation to get excited about.

Huh I was only pointing out Alvarez beat two top 10 ranked guys to win his title so no cake walk .. and u go on a tangent bout Sykora? Lol .. :D. Idk if u r serious sometimes xD

Aren't you including Sykora as one of the "top 10 ranked guys"? I don't think he'll be top 10 in a hot second and won't be the rest of the year. And one point wins could easily be one point losses. But I know you don't get much to be excited about in Catpeeland, so have at it.

May have sports induced asthma - I did but was not aware of it until years later. Might want to get this checked out.
