2020 Southern Scuffle Thread

I've talked to some guys close to Carter and was told he is a totally different person then he was 12 months ago. Both mentally and physically. Was told that him not getting a single TD his first week in the room was a huge slice of humble pie. He absolutely looks like a different guy on the mat to me.
I agree. I saw him wrestle in HS, but he is a different wrestler this year. He looks great!!

So it's not just me. Love the type that doesn't get down on himself, but works harder. Seems to be getting along with guys in room with the singlet swapping. I wouldn't have said he had the highest ceiling of all of those guys, but he's going to be fun to watch for years.
The way I see it is that Brooks and Carter seem to be bonus potential machines. Lee will constantly be taking big progressive steps, similar to his brother. Beard has the potential to be a 4x AA and I equate to a MM type. Kerk is a wildcard on how good he is. All 5 of them have the opportunity and talent to win a NC at some point in their career, if not multiple. That's just the back half, boys. Just the back half.

thought Joe ran out of gas today. Would take him against TL any time. Beard gassed a bit as well. Can't blame them - they're wrestling on the B team at the moment, taking a shirt. This tourney didn't put any doubt on these young men. Studs.

Impressed with Beard. As stated he beat the #1, #3, and #6 seeds, with #8 to come later. Lost to #2. Four out of his five matches vs ranked wresters, with Reenen and Geer legit top 10. WrestleStat actually had Geer at #2. Tough, tough tournament for Beard. I would agree he needs improvement on the bottom, especially versus legs.

I watched all of Carter's matches and was very impressed. Great TD's and tough as nails. However, he did not face the level of competition that Beard faced. Only 2 of Starocci's opponents are ranked by WrestleStat (Carey #17, Richards #19), only 1 ranked on Flo (Carey #25), and neither ranked on Intermat.

Looking forward to what Cael decides to do at 197.

i think Beard is also a bonus type wrestler. He wrestled the toughest competition at this tournament.

I'm quite enthused about all 3 guys right now. Starocci is looking great! Not to take anything away from him (at all!), but he hasn't yet faced the same level of competition that Lee and Beard have faced. Here are results with ranked wrestlers (Intermat):

Lee:
L--#8 Bullard 9-4
L--#13 Wittlake 8-4
W--UR but NQ Flynn Fall
Wrestles #11 Wentzel for 5th

Starocci:
W--#16 Carey 13-5
Wrestles UR Harvey for 1st

Beard:
W--#19 Pagano 9-0
W--#4 Reenan 1-0
W--#6 Geer 10-4
L--#8 Traxler 9-7
Wrestles #18 Laird for 3rd

And, it should be noted that in both of Lee's and Beard's losses our wrestlers had sizeable leads in each loss. Lee was up 4-1 with significant RT in both his losses; and Beard was up 6-2 with significant RT in his loss. All winnable. The common denominator was need to work on bottom for both Lee and Beard. Beard has faced the toughest competition by far.

SO--goal is not to take anything whatsoever away from Starocci, but to say that Lee and Beard have had very good Scuffles as well; and it's not yet clear to me who's got the most promise among them.

It would be cool if Billy Baldwin or somebody with juice could put a plug in for this kid for nationals. It would be great to hear him calling some action on ESPN.

that is a great idea. Twitter is the best way to contact BB on something like that. Im sure he could make something cool happen.

Maybe when FRL comes back on the air waves they could talk up a plan to make it happen.

Reenan did very little in that match. Thought the stall call on Beard and the no fleeing

Sorry if someone post this ... This kid was great calling matches. He has a bright future after wrestling career.
He does a great job with the play by play and still does a little color commentary on the side. Thanks for posting.

I'm grateful for the 149 start as we get to see the boys wrassle sooner.

Also, Abas v. Allirez had an amazing last minute.

Starocci with a quick escape and subsequent TD shortly after...was a grown man TD. Harvey escapes with 12 seconds left. Up 8-5 with 1:52 of RT heading to the 3rd...
