Wrestling 2022 NCAA Championships Results and Discussion threads

We can break even on it (or close to even) with some bonus in their next matches.
Yep, and "chalk" favors us.

To lose, we need a pretty high PSU seed to place a few spots down, or a pretty low seed from specifically Iowa or Michigan to make a run (probably both). Or, alternatively, we need an across the board bad tournament.

None of those things have happened yet. Could, but haven't.

Not just the upsets but also the close matches and lack of falls and tech falls from the high seeds… did the extra year maybe create more parity than usual?

Most of the bitchin' here is because of the perceived effect on the team race - but really, who cares? We have six guys who matter, the other 3 are just window dressing except for about once in 10 years. Those 3 are 50/50 guys just about every match here - the coin landed tails two out of three times this round. To expect something different at this tourney despite about 10 years worth of NCAA history out of the three is fooling yourself.

Now before Roar comes on here and chastises me for the "who cares?" Yes, for the individuals it is tough. Last go round for Berge and DH and they are already on the backside. But means nothing for who hoists the team trophy Saturday.

If one of the big six goes down unexpectedly - then start worrying.
Berge has no business losing to that guy, he's qualified for world teams and should matter an awful lot. Hildebrandt finished 4th last year, he's got to be better than Lock Haven's guy. I get it that these points don't matter like the ones we'll be getting from the hammers but I wanted to see Berge/Carr because it would have been a close match and DH/Suriano was close too.

Also, I feel for the athletes and know they're going to regret not taking a shot at their last shot at nationals. It's a sad way to go out.

Is he gonna not shoot then too?

I'm more disappointed on perceived effort, which is probably foolish, too. It SEEMs like they have the ability to do the opposite of what they actually do, but maybe I am wrong. That's where my disappointment lies.

Don't blame those of us who had PSU scoring 140 pts this weekend - Nico, English and Wright have raised expectations for lower seeded PSU guys. So now all Beau has to do is make the semifinals or of course a 7 match Berge run on the back side would work just the same. Either....or both!

Michigan are wrestling stupid too and leaving matches in doubt way too long but they're winning the ones they're supposed to. If Lewan and Cam Amine had lost it would have been a lot better.

Cam Amine with a takedown with 20 seconds left...Michigan doing what they need to do early.
Gonna be a battle, love it

IMO the extra year in a lot of sports doesnt turn out the way athletes want. Their bodies start to give out and these guys get burnt out. I think the parity is caused by these factors. It's tough to play any sport for that long and not lose a bit of the fire.

Berge v Carr may or may not have ended with a close score. At no point in that 7 minute time frame would it have ever appeared Carr might lose.

Eventually it must be accepted, their abilities are what they show. Not what our minds' perceive/desire those abilities to be.

174 lbs. First Round
CStar vs C O’Neill (RUT)

Hoping CStar ends this one before 7 mins.

CStar with a wrist to thumb wrap. TD CStar 35 secs in. Lets him up. OOB. Snaps him down… near side cradle… settles for TD. 4-1 now. Lets him up. 1:10 to go. Gets CO out of position, wraps up two legs and finishes again. 6-2 with 49 secs to go. 52 secs RT. OOB and restart. Working for a turn with some funk… two back points. 8-2 after one with 1:40ish RT.

CO chooses bottom. CStar flattens him out. Riding. Working for a tilt but no back points. Stalling on CO. CStar working hard for a turn. Lets him up when he can’t get it. Very aggressive. Stalling on CO. 9-3 now. Double leg and a finish. 11-3. I think CStar got called for locked hands. 11-4. Cross body ride; trying to get a turn. 11-4 after two. 3:17 RT.

CStar chooses bottom. Sitting back in and gets reversal. 13-4. Riding. Lets him up. 13-5. Quick double leg. 15-5. Lets him up. Single leg… pulls him in… finishes. 17-6. OOB. 1:06 to go. Riding… tries for cradle. Tries to let him up but OOB. Gives neutral. 17-7. Double leg td. 19-7. Now gets a turn… and the fall! Hard to keep up with the action! FALL by CStar! Two big bonus points puts us back on the team standings board in 4th!

O'Neil should be stalled out of this match already. Dude has been less active than a doormat.
