2024 U20 Worlds - September 2-8

blaze ono and midlovets all on same side. Ono and Midlovets would hit rd 16
The bottom half is ****ing brutal especially the bottom quarter bracket. Blaze should have Abbasov in the quarters. That bottom quarter though has Ozbek, Midlovets, and Ono. Top side has Harutyunyan, Nurlanbek, and Khari. Whoever wins this bracket will have run a gauntlet. This is the second to worst draw for a US wrestler behind Rademacher. Blaze is good enough to still come through and win it but man it is tough. Abbasov took 3rd at U17’s last year and 2nd at U20 Euros this year. Blaze should breeze through his first 2 matches but the quarters, semis, and finals will be real tests.

Pretty deep weight with a bunch of good guys but no one really standing above the rest. Begenjov is the favorite for me. He has wrestled a ton and just this year he has placed at seniors, U23, and U20 levels. Kamiya, Gogritchiani, Bexultanov, Saidulov, and Ryder are in the next tier. Saidulov doesn’t have many results but his one result is winning U20 Euros. Kamiya has wrestled on the senior level this year and was U20 silver in the past. Bexultanov has really solid results but never completely broken through. Gogritchiani has good results on the age level circuit and seems to be wrestling well

Ryder is dangerous and will absolutely be in medal contention. He doesn’t put up a ton of points but is super strong and stingy defensively. Great from the over/under position where he has a great whip over where he scores a lot and gets some falls as well. He had a really good trials where he beat Iowas great hope Gabe Arnold in 2 straight.

Prediction-

Gold-Alp Arslan Begenjov
Silver-Ryunosuke Kamiya
Bronze-Zack Ryder
Bronze-Giorgi Gorgritchiani
Ryder would have Gorgritchiani or Saidulov in semis. Begenov and Kamiya would hit in other semi

This is a really good weight with both depth and high end talent. There is a prohibitive favorite though in Kadiev. He is actually my second biggest favorite out of all the weights. He dominated U20’s last year with 4 techs and an 8-4 decision. This year at U20 Euros his closet match was 9-1 to Mustafazade. I expect him to win a second title in fairly dominant fashion again.

Next tier is large lead by Naadambat and then Bors, Mustafazade, Yagan, Firouzjaei, and Barr. Naadambat has been great on the age group level and has been wrestling seniors this year. Yagan got teched by Kadiev at Euros but he scored 5 points which is the most Kadiev gave up in multiple tournaments on the U20 level and Yagan was just outside the medals last year. Mustafazade doesn’t have a ton of results but the ones he has our pretty good. Firouzjaei is in his first year at U20’s but did well at Asians and Iran always sends tough kids. Bors has great results on the age group level and beat our own Zack Ryder last year. He’s tough to score on and should definitely be in the medal hunt

I’m a fan of Barr and have been for a long time. I see the same issues the rest of you do though but there is no denying the kid is a gamer and won’t back down. His trials were so impressive especially the finals against Sinclair. Barr got dominated by Sinclair at the open and I doubt many people, myself included, thought he had much of a chance to reverse that result at trials. Never count out the PSU staff to game plan and have their guys ready though. After a super tight first win where he pulled it off super late Barr absolutely crushed Sinclair in the last match to make this team. Huge accomplishment after coming so close to making the team last year. Barr can place but I’m not picking it. I see him having some trouble finishing against the top guys but I think he will be competitive with most. I hope I’m wrong and Barr brings home a medal

Predictions-

Gold-Kadiev
Silver-Naadambat
Bronze-Bors
Bronze-Mustafazade
Barr opposite side of Kadiev and Naadambat. The top quarter is unreal, Bors vs Mustafazade in qualifying rd, winner would have Yagan in quarters. Whoever comes out of this quarter would be Barr's semi opponent

Duke, assuming he keeps winning, would hit Baitukaev in the semis and Karampour in the finals.
Duke has a pretty decent draw. He has his biggest challenger on his side in Baitukaev but they wouldn’t meet until the semis. The top half is actually tougher overall I think. It has Karampour, Heybatov, Oliinyk, Nadiparwale, Otinashvili, and Yamashita. Dukes first match should be a cakewalk. 2nd match is much tougher against Sakybaev who was 5th here last year. With this draw I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t medal. Gold or bronze depends on his showdown with Baitukaev

Really solid weight overall. Good quality throughout with top level talent snd lots of guys in contention to medal. Favorites are Malachdibirov, Jafarli, Kurugliyev, and Mirasola. Malachdibirov, Kurugliyev and Jafarli all have previous age level medals and have good recent results as well. Kurugliyev hasn’t quite matched his U17 results but is dangerous and could absolutely bring home gold. That said, Malachdibirov is the favorite for me. Took 3rd last year at U20’s and won a deep bracket at U20 Euros this year including a win over Jafarli in the finals

2 others who need mentioned are Arsunkaev and Petriashvili. Arsunkaev has a silver at U17’s and just placed 3rd at U20 Asians. Petriashvili is the younger brother of all time great Geno Petriashvili and just won gold at U17’s. I expect him to win a couple matches but not be extremely competitive with the top guys. He’s wrestling well right now but placed 8th earlier this year at U20 Euros.

Mirasola is a beast and someone I expect to win
NCAA titles and world titles in the future. Sky is the limit for him. He is also great in freestyle with wins over Evan Wick, Max Dean, and David McDadden just this past year. He can absolutely win this weight but he doesn’t have any international experience yet so adapting to the foreign style could present a few issues.

Predictions-
Gold-Malachdibirov
Silver-Mirasola
Bronze-Jafarli
Bronze-Kurugliyev
Miralosa has a solid path to semis where he would hit Jarafarli. Petra and Kurugliev in rd16 on opposite side, Arsunkaev and Malachdibirov hit in qualifying round and winner liklely faces Petra/Kurugliev in semi. Very good draw for Connor IMO

Really great top end talent with a few others pushing for medals. Not overly deep overall though. The class of the weight is Aitmukhan and Babaloo. Aitmukhan took 2nd at U20’s last year at 92kg and followed that up with a senior world title at 92kg. This year he’s been wrestling seniors and had a competitive 4-2 match with Olympic champ Tazhudinov. I see him as the favorite but Babaloo will absolutely be in the running as well. He won U20’s at 97kg last year and beat Camden McDanel in the semis. This year he has won U20 Asians while also having pretty solid results on the senior level. If this ends up being a final it should be one of the best

Other contenders are Shakhman Nukaev, Sahil Jaglan and Rifat Gidak. Jaglan won U23 Asians this year and was runner-up at U20 Asians only losing to Babaloo. Gidak is an age level champion and runner-up so he knows how to compete on this stage. I don’t really see him challenging the top 2 but should definitely see him in the medal hunt. Nukaev doesn’t have many results I could find like most of the Russian athletes. On Flo they say he was U20 runner-up last year but I don’t see that anywhere. He did beat Gidak at U20 Euros however so he should be looking to medal

Rademacher was the biggest surprise to make this US team. At the US open he was at 92kg and ended up losing to Connor Mirasola in the finals. He moved up to 97kg for trials and had an incredible run. He teched Herzog and then pulled a big upset beating Cody Merrill. Many, including myself, thought Merrill was the guy to beat at this weight. Rademacher did beat him and then in the finals knocked off U20 bronze Camden McDanel. I see him with an outside chance to medal but much more likely to finish 5th or lower.

Predictions-

Gold-Aitmukhan
Silver-Babaloo
Bronze-Jaglan
Bronze-Nukhaev
Aitmukhan and Babaloo hit in rd16! Rademacher has Nukhaev in qualifiers. Jaglan and Gidak will hit rd16 on other side. Rademacher has a tough draw on the tougher side. Would have to pull off something special to medal probably

Lots of top end talent but not much depth. This weight also has hands down the biggest favorite at any weight in Amirreza Masoumi. He is a U17, 2X U20, and U23 champ who has demolished every American he has faced. He’s ranked #4 on the senior level only behind Geno, Zare, and Akgul. I think he walks to his 3rd straight U20 title.

Although Masoumi is a massive favorite there are quite a few other really talented guys who should be looking to capture silver or bronze. This group includes Davudgadzhiev, Buyukcingil, Dursunov, and Kueter. Dursunov and Buyukcingil have great results at the age group level with Dursunov winning U17 gold and Buyukcingil winning a bronze at U20’s last year. Davudgadzhiev only has the single result but it was gold and he beat Buyukcingil in the finals 5-0. One last guy is Jaspooran Singh. He is still U17 eligible where he took 5th last month and has also placed 3rd.

Kueter is an exceptional athlete and wrestler who is probably going to get a lot better as he focuses full time on wrestling. He had a solid trials where he beat Attao 8-7 and Sahakian 11-2 before beating Jim Mullen 2 straight in the finals 5-4 and 5-3. I expect him to do well but he is undersized and will likely have issues against the bigger heavy’s like Masoumi. He’s going to need to focus on his quickness and superior athleticism to go deep in the tournament. I’m picking him to be just out of the medals but I won’t be surprised to see him on the podium either.

Predictions-

Gold-Masoumi
Silver-Davudgadzhiev
Bronze-Buyukcingil
Bronze-Dursunov
Kueter hit an expectional draw. Opposite side of Masoumi, Davud, Buyuk and Dursonov. Davud and Buyuk hit in rd 16 with winner getting Dursonov in quarterws and then Masoumi in semi-finals.

Lockett has Eshinimaev rd of 16, Itaev in semis, Yaprak and Rezaei are on the other side
74kg is always a tough weight and this year is no different. The huge favorite in Rezaei is opposite Lockett along with Ando, Yaprak, Caso, and Marcu. Locket’s path is super tough though. He starts with this years 3rd placer at U20 Asians Tuleberdiev. Win and he gets Eshinimaev who I picked to win silver. Get by him and his quarter should be much easier. Win and in the semis he probably gets either Itaev or Gevorgyan. Itaev took 5th at senior Euros this year and only lost to Musukaev 2-1 and Andreasyan 6-5. Gevorgyan took 3rd at U17 worlds last year only losing to Blaze. I really don’t know what to think after seeing this bracket. I could see him making the finals or not placing at all. Tough path so he has to be on point every match

Ryder would have Gorgritchiani or Saidulov in semis. Begenov and Kamiya would hit in other semi
Ryder got a pretty great draw. He should definitely wrestle for a medal. His quarter bracket is the weakest of them all. First match against Li from China who took 5th at U20 Asians. Second match against LJ Araujo who is from North Dakota but representing Brazil. He is a 5X ND state champ who is headed to Nebraska for college. Ryder hammered him at the pan-ams earlier this year though. Ryder’s quarter should be no problem either. His semifinal will be extremely tough and should be against either Saidulov or Gogritchiani. The other side of the bracket is much deeper and tougher. I see him winning silver or bronze depending on if he wins his semi or not. I think whoever comes out of the bottom brings home gold.

Barr opposite side of Kadiev and Naadambat. The top quarter is unreal, Bors vs Mustafazade in qualifying rd, winner would have Yagan in quarters. Whoever comes out of this quarter would be Barr's semi opponent
Barr with a decent draw. The biggest thing is being opposite of Kadiev which he is. His first match against Sachin is tough though. Sachin took U17 gold in 2022 and wrestled at senior worlds last year. Win there and his quarter probably against either Kulakou or Asano is easier and a match Barr should win. His semi would of course be much tougher. Like @wrestlingfan22 said, the top quarter bracket is unreal. Whoever comes out of it I’ll favor over Barr. That has him wrestling for a medal though. He can absolutely win bronze but I still see it more likely he ends up 5th. This could be a pivotal weight in the team race. If Barr can punch through and get on the podium that would be huge

Mirasola’s draw is a lot like Dukes. Good overall and shouldn’t have too much trouble making the semis. Really really tough semi though against Jafarli who took 2nd here last year. The opposite side of the bracket is a meat grinder with 5 of the best 7 guys. Whoever comes out between Petriashvili, Kurugliyev, Demberel, Malachdibirov, and Daliri will have absolutely earned it. I still have Mirasola winning silver, beating Jafarli in the semis and losing to Malachdibirov in the finals

Aitmukhan and Babaloo hit in rd16! Rademacher has Nukhaev in qualifiers. Jaglan and Gidak will hit rd16 on other side. Rademacher has a tough draw on the tougher side. Would have to pull off something special to medal probably
What a crazy draw! 2 of the very best guys in the entire tournament hit first round. Senior world champion and U20 runner-up Aitmukhan vs U20 world and Asian champion Babaloo. I’m not sure who to pick. Even though Aitmukhan won worlds last year KAZ sent Yergali to the Olympics. I assume that means Yergali was viewed as superior by the KAZ coaches. Just saying all this because Babaloo lost to Yergali 3-2 earlier this year. This one is too close to call. I think the winner of this match wins it all which is bad news for Rademacher considering they are on the same side of the bracket. That might be ok if Rademacher could make the semis but he has Nukhaev from Russia first round which I think he loses. Just a brutal draw. Really it’s the USA’s only horrible draw so I can’t complain too much especially since I didn’t have Rademacher placing anyways

Kueter hit an expectional draw. Opposite side of Masoumi, Davud, Buyuk and Dursonov. Davud and Buyuk hit in rd 16 with winner getting Dursonov in quarterws and then Masoumi in semi-finals.
Kueter really does have the perfect draw. Him and Bassett have the best draws for team USA hands down. Every single top guy besides Kueter is on the bottom half. Another insane first round match goes down between Buyukcingil and Davudgadzhiev. This is a rematch of the U20 Euro finals which Davudgadzhiev won 5-0. Buyukcingil did take 3rd here last year though. On the same side we also have Dursunov vs Abramishvili and Singh vs Masoumi. Both Dursunov and Abramishvili took 3rd at U20 Euros this year. I think Dursunov is the favorite though. Singh is good but still U17 eligible and has the biggest favorite in this tournament. Masoumi will demolish him. I think we see a Davudgadzhiev vs Masoumi semi on the bottom half and a Kueter vs Batbayar semi up top. The only 2 guys with any real credentials up top besides Kueter is Batbayar and Kussainov. Batbayar has a U20 Asians silver and bronze while Kussainov took 5th and 7th at U17 worlds. Kueter should make the finals and look dominant doing it. Unfortunately I see Masoumi hammering him. Masoumi is just too big and strong. This draw is massive for the team race. Kueter not placing to winning silver should solidify the US at the top

The bottom half is ****ing brutal especially the bottom quarter bracket. Blaze should have Abbasov in the quarters. That bottom quarter though has Ozbek, Midlovets, and Ono. Top side has Harutyunyan, Nurlanbek, and Khari. .... This is the second to worst draw for a US wrestler behind Rademacher.
My brain hurts, sounds like a bunch of Russian law firms to me.

J'Den is the USA coach now. Typically, each wrestler has their own coach in the corner, though. Pretty sure Casey cornered Mesenbrink last year.

Casey, Nick Lee, and Cody are all listed as personal coaches for PSU guys. KD for Duke.
