B1G Championships Session 1 Thread

125 Consolation R1: Kuhn vs. Mitch Maginnis (Nebraska)

Per 1
Kuhn in on a single, they scramble, Kuhn drives in and gets the TD, 2-0 at about the 1:30 mark. Maginnis was on his back, and Kuhn got swipes, but not points. Kuhn throws in a boot. He's able to tilt him, and gets 2 NF, 4-0. End. 1:27 in RT for Kuhn

Per 2
Maginnis takes bottom. Kuhn tries to get a cradle, nothing. Working a power half, nothing. Kuhn throws in a boot, and then tilts him. He got 2 swipes, then 3 swipes, then 2 swipes, so it's 2 NF, 6-0. PD stoppage at 1:01 left. Maginnis up and out quickly, 6-1. Maginnis in on the legs, they scramble, and nothing. End. RT @ 2:34 for Kuhn.

Per 3
Kuhn takes bottom. They go OOB. Kuhn up quickly on the restart and gets the esc, 7-1. Kuhn in on the legs and trying to lock a cradle. He loses the cradle, so it's just a TD, 9-1. Maginnis gets a reversal after a long scramble. Then Kuhn with a reversal, 11-3. With the 2:55 in RT, it's a 12-3 major!

That's big for Carson, and for PSU!

Come on, man. Stop reacting. These are the worsts posts. Shak has wrestled well. The score of the last match is not indicative of the match.
I agree completely with your comments, but I am wondering why he wouldn' t try to get a number of takedowns, secure the win and then try his cradle? He seemed to be able to take down Chakonis at will.
Just asking.

That would be the Bo Schembechler perspective.

We are trying to win the national title. Big Ten title is a nice to have but not the goal.
so true...but i am sure Cael cares a little about what is in front of his nose...you should too:)

Love watching Kuhn wrestle a non-hammer. Feel good about him slipping into one of these 10 spots.

Probably what it’s going to come down to, isn’t it. Based on common opponent scores, maybe he’ll challenge Rivera. Regardless, he should have a good chance against any of the others for that 9/10 spot. Really hoping he can get it done

Are we done or do Keener and Kuhn have one more consi match in this session?

Yeah, he was better on his feet. He's better than almost everyone he has wrestled on his feet. The thing is, he is confident he can pin every guy. Shak is very good on top. Even without the cradle he can work you. I don't blame him for trying to work guys on top, although maybe he plays catch and release a bit first to break them first.

I'm not one for braggadocio, but the fact that the Brands enable guys like Gilman to do the kind of shit that Massa did after that match, and watching Massa flex right at the Iowa corner after the win makes me laugh. HR is talking how they think Massa is some mega douche but would fall all over themselves to say how much they love Gilman for doing the same kind of shit.

It is hypocrisy at its' best.

Can a non-wrestling expert get some help here. We have 8 in semis and 2 alive in cons. osu 9 and 1. They are up 4.5 pts, but yet max possible is identical, per psu web site. what I am I missing? thx

People flipping out over little things.

SMH.

It’s a very competitive tourney. Big Ten kids are tough. They’re competing hard too, just not our Nitts.

For some clarity, last year in this tourney PSU had a #2 seed get pinned two or three times.

I think we’re in pretty good shape.

Buckeyes have some brutal semi matchups tonight.

Shak -- not worried about him. I suspect his lack of devastating cradles and quick finishes is a combination of first-time B1G tourney jitters and some self-imposed pressure to bonus (the predominant reason he got the nod over Cassar reportedly).

Upsets -- What are the biggest upsets/surprises in session 1? Massa's win is considered an upset, though many of us saw him having a decent shot.

In semifinals tonight, PSU is favored by seed in 7 of their 8 (Nevills is underdog) while tOSU is favored in 6 of their 9 (S. Lee over NATO, Kemerer over M. Jordan and Zain over Hayes).

In Consolations, Campbell (tOSU) wrestles Alex Marinelli #2. For PSU, Carson Kuhn wrestles Sebastian Rivera #4 and Corey Keener wrestles #12 Jenz Lantz.

Does Jason go tonight?

What are people's guesses?

I bet he's lobbying the coaches hard, but Cael may sit him with eyes on the BIG prize in two weeks.

WTF? I just got a Longing for raptor headache. That guy was 0-12 on the year?????
I'm not sure how or why he was 0-12. He is a former IN State Champ and while not one of Indiana's all-time greats, he was a solid wrestler. He gave a good showing today, but lots of people wondering what the hell is going on at IU and how Goldman still has a job.

Great point.

HR would cast a bronze statue of their wrestler if he did the same stunt.

Bo and Zain byes likely cost us the lead.

btw...did Hall finally beat BO with quicker fall?
Not really. PSU had 3 byes, Ohio State had 2 byes. So that's a max 2 extra bonus pts. You get 1 point for a round 1 bye if you win in round 2.
