Bo Bassett thread

I remain a confused NIL skeptic. If I had $100 million I still wouldn't be thinking about paying some highschool kid 6-7 figures to play at my alma mater. All the while needing to consider it starts all over again next year, and the next year, and the next,... I love PSU and wrestling, but my mind still can't wrap around this concept for sports that lose money every year.

Does not even get to next year. If the cafeteria is out of tater tots they portal after one game.

I’m with u I think Basset most likely destination is PSU, I just don’t understand y ppl rooting for Iowa/okiestate if it isn’t tho
Bo to Iowa would be baffling to me. Iowa has shown a poor ability to develop / improve athletes. The list of wrestlers who haven’t met their goals at Iowa vastly outnumbers those who have achieved their goals. Also, objectively, Bo’s wrestling style is unlike anything I’ve seen at Iowa in the past 10 years. Bo has Iowa on his short list for the sole purpose of broadening his fan base.

A few takes on this. First Rutgers won’t get him, Bo already tech falled their greatest wrestler on all time while in HS. The statue and 40 ft mural of Ashnault won’t impress him.

Nil will be a factor but won’t be the biggest part or he would have signed at Iowa. I am sure Bobby offered a solid dollar figure.

His marketing and approach is changing wrestling. I could see colleges wanting him and paying top dollar, knowing they will get a huge return. I think every kid knows him. Heck he is the center fold in the $40 rudis magazine which is filled with pics of JB, Snyder and even Spencer Lee.

This weekend will be the first time I see him live at Powerade. I might even get an autograph, just kidding , no I am not

How is any college going to “get a huge return”? Financially? How many more tickets is he going to sell? Go see him once… 2 minute tech fall… been there done that. If he’s as good as advertised most matches will be boring.

No single wrestler is moving the needle for any program. PSU or Iowa or OKSt aren’t getting more eyeballs than they already get. 90% of programs don’t draw more than 1000/meet. Even if he doubles attendance (not happening) isn’t a huge return.

The only scenario that makes a little sense to my feeble brain is a business with a massive advertising budget to throw around (Nike & Phil Knight, Oregon) Granted I think he is now using his personal wealth with a few more zeros).

As for Bo and commanding $1 Mill? Whomever is writing that check should watch the movieo moneyball first.

Merry Christmas, and in the spirit of Christmas I encourage anyone with that kind of financial flexibility to focus on thinking of affecting more than one person with that kind of gift. No matter your faith or political affiliation there are oodles of fantastic charities doing great work for those in real need.
The biggest NIL paydays come from VERY rich kids buying toys for their own pleasure. For this class of wealth, just the annual interest on principal can fund many NIL bags. Yes, there are better philanthropic pursuits than enriching an athlete in hopes of improving a favorite college team, but, meh, it’s the rich kid’s money to spend how they want. An eternal optimist who grew up dirt poor, I like to think NIL’s largest spenders donate far more to the oodles of fantastic charities you cite. If they don’t, I’m not above wishing that their NIL projects fail. ;)

Okie State is an example of the rich kid spending his money with the hiring of David Taylor. Does the rich kid continue to spend his money on NIL at Okie State? For the rich kid, NIL in Olympic sports is a lot cheaper than it is for football and basketball.

OTOH, what is the NIL delta to go to Okie State versus PSU where you have the best coaches in the world and the best room in the USA. How much is possible Olympic glory worth to someone?

I think what will eventually be the norm in college sports is a tiered NIL program. In coming Freshman offered x and then after each year an increase of x. If possible NCAA needs to allow a student athlete to transfer after his freshman year and every 2 years after that without limits.A grad student would be allowed an additional transfer also . That technically allows a STUDENT athlete 3 transfers and opportunities to improve his NIL situation. The NCAA is already adapting the red shirt rules. I think eventually 5 years will become the allowable participation of a sport. Obviously the upper end football/basketball player would have the professional option.

Alumni will pony up more donations if a program is winning

If OKSt is actually paying $17,000 to fly him and his teammates down there it's kind of a dick move if he doesn't choose them.

When you see how poorly most charities are run or how much actually gets to those in need, you get why folk dump money into sports. If you dig you can find many that really get the help to those in need but many do the minimum.

The OSU benefactor does not participate in NIL to my understanding. He is spending money on developing high school wrestling in OK.

So if a company flies you in for an interview, and you find out that they aren't the right fit, you're supposed to take the job and move there anyway? Because they paid airfare?

I doubt OkSt directly paid the $17K, that would be a NCAA violation. You can pay for an official visit, you cannot pay for an unofficial visit. That would include someone with official ties to OkSt not being able to pay for the trip.

Did someone pay for Bishop McCourt going to the tournament? Different question, where there is smoke, there is most likely some fire.

As the NIL part takes hold there eventually will be not that much difference between what most programs offer. As that occurs during the NIL maturation process things will come down to where do I feel comfortable, where do I think I can achieve my goals.

I am comfortable with the belief Bo is going to be a Lion.
