Final X Matchups

Uhoh, don't look now, but I guess TR is our buddy now.
He's applying the logic of a specific situation to one where it doesn't apply. The first exchange is a great example. Zain gets the 4 even though he's exposed because Yianni doesn't stop his motion then initiate his own counter. It's all one roll with Zain's momentum never being stopped. That's not the case in the last sequence. The motion is stopped in that crackdown for a long time and Yianni completely changes the direction of Zain's body with the roll. Zain was certainly trying to expose Yianni, but not by rolling through over the top. He was just trying to elevate that leg. Yianni took him through against his will. That's Yianni's points every time with competent officiating.

The match wasn't scored correctly in two instances where Yianni was given points that he should not have been given yet there are people who believe he was robbed of a win here.

Do you want the match scored correctly, or do you want them to uphold a poorly officiated match so that a guy can be awarded the win with points that were not there?

I don't know what the right interpretation of the rules are for the challenge and it seems like most people are confused as well, but the one thing we know from watching that match is had it been scored correctly Zain wins.

Love both of those guys. Wish they would have just let it go and wrestled a 3rd. Just leaves a bad taste in everyone’s mouth, and doesn’t let Zain get the credit he deserves for making amazing changes after the Open and out-wrestling Yianni.

That being said I think the last sequence is getting all the attention when the first one clearly should not have been 4-4. If you had 10 officials watch the whole match and re-score, don’t know if any would conclude Yianni actually scored more points.

Zain et friends have a good taste in their mouth.

Why not throw out the second match entirely, and just use the first match as the decider. Oh wait, we cant do THAT either, Yianni may have wrestled differently in the first match had he known.
If the 2nd match is overturned then start over with 3 new rounds. Fairer this way, tho in my eyes, Zain won both.

Cael and Co could have challenged if it was so unfair and clear.

What could possibly go wrong with that precedent?

Absolutely no coaches would ever file a protest after the 2nd match in order to get the first match erased. Never gonna happen. Especially not Koll or Tan Tom. No chance they would.

In terms of an appeal, I believe it would be to the USOC? USA Wrestling has made their decision, Zain won.

It would be nice if one of the governing bodies, USOC or USAW, would make an official statement as to whether it can be actually be appealed and, if it can, the timeline/process for the appeal.

Big shoutout to FLO for their production of Final X. Great promotion and pre-match analysis......great Venue and Crowd. It seemed issue-free in terms of streaming. Really top notch.

USOC? This wasn't an USOC event.
Watch the interview with Rich Bender on Flo. He talks about Final X as a protected trials event and if an athlete believes he was denied his right the appeal is to the USOC. Bender talks about the decision at Final X is final and there is no appeal/protest process for the decision. He specifically mentions article 9. The interview does not seem to be explicit on the process but it seems the appeal would not be to USA Wrestling.

Kamal may be the future, but Pat has definitely elevated his game. I'm confident in his ability to represent the US. Granted, obviously a bit of MN bias, there.

I hope the USOC has no say. In the USOC world all decisions go to the highest bidder.

Nobody thought Retherford could beat Yianni? Really?

Can’t say “nobody,” but there was a strong consensus that Yianni would win. Pyles, Bratke, Nomad, and Willie all had Yianni winning in two straight on FRL last week. Willie was the only one who was willing to say he thought Zain could win one of the three matches. (“I ain’t picking it but it could happen.”) Nomad said a Zain win would be a blow for America’s chances to medal at 65 kg this year. Pyles said, “How can you possibly pick Zain after seeing what you saw at the US Open? After seeing the heater that Yianni is currently on?” Zain was definitely an underdog.

Yes, I was surprised by the wagon all the flo guys jumped on as they seem to be more level headed than that. I like their opinions but sure wish they would talk all wrestling, not just what they cover (I.e. Jr Pan Ams).

It's in FLO's best interest for someone like Yianni to win the world team spot as he's given them a ton of access in the past and presumably would in the present/future. Yianna is also really good and just beat a top guy in the world at Beat the Streets, so the predictions were warranted. Don't think they hate on Zain at all, but Yianni winning would be huge for Flo, too.

I've been fairly happy with Flo in recent years--after some issues before that. But I did have a problem getting their feed. I was flying internationally and decided to fork out 30 euros to get in flight streaming--so I could watch the Final X. I kept losing the stream. I saw most of both of Gwiz's matches, none of Zain's action, and only 1 period of Bo's 2 matches. I know that was more of an in flight streaming issue than a Flo issue, but a disappointment all the same, especially after shelling out a good bit to pay for in flight streaming. I've never tried in flight streaming before, so don't know if that's a common issue or not. All the same--CONGRATS Zain!!

I was never down on Zain and felt he could definitely beat Yianni. Personally, I believe Yianni has been in some really bad situations with Zain and was very fortunate to get out of them. I think Final X showed that. Yianni is amazing for sure but so is Zain.

In Cael's defense, you don't throw a brick in the middle of that sequence. It's least-intrusive to wrestling action to wait for the sequence to end. Had they stopped it or the brick had halted anything, they'd want his head on a platter, too.

I'm all for a match 3.

I hear you. Zain is who he is and is coming off a pretty good performance at World teams. Can't discount that as well.

I don't understand the whole thing about let's do a match 3. The officials ruled it the way they ruled it. If the appeal turns up that they didn't follow the rules for how to get their decision, then I don't see how that changes the match to Yianni's favor. I would think that should mean they throw out the match and re-wrestle match 2.

All of that being said, USA wrestling has a real issue if they start changing or throwing out match results after the fact.

Can you imagine if the NFL went back and changed the result on the Saints/Rams game last year?

I like your thought process here!

Are you saying you think Yianni won match 2?

Congrats to all the men and women that secured their spot.

Regarding Zain and Yianni, they're both young, and will have many close battles in the future, assuming they stay 65kg. Since this is an Olympic Weight, we'll likely see them next year.

A lot of people were acting like Zain got teched at the Open. That match was about as even as a match could be. To think Zain had no chance is complete BS.

They're still debating that, and looking into what kind of ratings they would get for a mid-summer Super Bowl.
