Yes this is all consistent with what I recall at the time too, which would mostly stand in opposition to @js8793 ’s assertion that the reason Downey didn’t wrestle for Iowa was that TnT took the high road and ran as far away from him as possible. There is not much evidence to suggest that’s the case.
He didn’t get accepted into the university.
Maybe he got suspended for asking for en extra bite to eat.
If they bring in Dewey and Howe, they'd have Dewey Chittum and Howe.
And yet @js8793 would have us believe instead that TnT were the ones who deemed Downey unfit for the wrestling team, as evidence that their judgment going forward in the Ferrari wreck would be just as prudent.

Gabe Arnold couldn't score on Nelson Brands if there were 2 of him out there. He has short arms and a strong lack of level change. The guy will be a non factor his entire career. 5-6 place type guy with almost no bonus. Iowa fans have wanted longer body types and guys who would be bonus machines and this guy isn't it. 3-2 yawn. 4-3 yawn.

I was sitting around thinking about wrestling. I think I understand the whole Larry Lee recruiting the portal for Iowa. Larry snags Real Woods for the Hawks. A Stanford graduate, a hard nosed wrestler that damn near secured the first national championship above 133 since Metcalf.
Without Larry doing the necessary screening and arranging the introductions the TnT boys left alone come up with an Okie St cast-off that may not be good enough to make the starting line-up.

Yup, I think we’re going to see some fireworks here between the parties involved. Gabe talking like he’s the starter when Nelson is Terry’s son, just had a hell of a tournament, and fits Iowa style to a T. I think we see the Arnold’s create a shit show.
