Iowa

Posters on the Iowa board seem much more realistic about Cruz. He was 0-2 against D1 wrestlers as a true freshman (Neither loss was to a starter). Ayala was an NQ with wins and close losses against top guys as a true freshman. Ayala was #5 on the Big Board coming out of high school. Cruz (#33 in 2022) was in roughly the same area on the Big Board as Gary Steen (#29 in 2021). Cruz is lightweight depth, which is never a bad thing to have, but if this is your best case for a “Tom Brands recruits over wrestlers” argument, you don’t have much of a case
Cruz's reputation got a lot of mileage from his HS matches with Richie Figs.

Sounds like something Mr. Objective @js8793 would post lol. But yes, anyone who thinks he can touch a healthy (or even half healthy lol) Ayala is way off.

That being said, I remember Cruz was considered an elite career 125 at one point, some thought similar tier to Figs. Then he kind of plateaued or maybe regressed. I remember Jesuroga completely manhandled him at WNO. Maybe he sees an opportunity at Iowa to rejuvenate himself in that room with TnT Coaching.

It was the bag of money. Bob needs to believe someone of significance will take his money.

Read someone speculating on GIA that this pick up might signal the gambling investigation includes an Iowa lightweight. Pure speculation, but interesting hypothesis.

When Joey lost his dad it really affected him and I don't see TnT getting his spark back for him. Would love to see him get it back tho bc the kid is tough as nails!

I saw Jason Isbell in concert a few times now over the years. Highly recommend!

Drive by Truckers, William Elliott Whitmore, Lucero, Devil Makes Three, Old Crow Medicine Show, Whiskey Myers, Shakey Graves, The SteelDrivers...

..my kind of music. Thank me later if you don't know them yet!
Jason Isbell is amazing. Hard to hear Morgan Whalen redo his song “cover me up”when I’ve been listening to it forever.

Why can't we? Assuming Starocci & Brooks are back and not out on ORS:

174, 197, HWT: clear favorites
157, 184: top 2 and close to 50-50 to win, only takes one great match...
149: SVN needs to clear the Sasso hurdle, but it's doable.
133: Nagao is one of a small handful of legit contenders if Vito isn't Superhuman Vito next year
141: Bartlett is a solid AA and could be a contender if he continues the upward trajectory he showed at nationals, but he needs to jump at least Alirez and Woods
165: If Mesenbrink goes, who knows what his potential is. 165 will be a meat grinder again, but he is a wild card in there
125: Totally unknown, but wide open if Robbie is healthy.

There's a path to 8 in there somewhere. I'm not betting on it, but it's there.
I think Vito is superman from here on out. His improvement this year was astronomical.
Also I think Bartlett wins it all next year. His improvement is batshit crazy as well. He keeps doing what most think he shouldn't be doing.
Bartlett just keeps grinding and improving. He's got the "it"

Shoulder injuries. Ugh. Might be the worst kind for wrestlers because of reinjury risk rate.

I think it was more a matter of Vito finally living up to his potential. After all, he was the only guy to beat Suriano in high school (I believe). I always wondered why he wasn't doing better (although the weight cut to 125 might have had something to do with it - I thought he'd be better off at 133).

Pretty sure Suriano went 159-0 in HS. Sound familiar?

It's petty of me, I know, but I can't help wishing for Angelo Ferrari to pass on Iowa . . just to read the meltdown over there. I've seen where this can't-miss, next-great-thing guy will grace us all with his decision later today.

I don't know. 5 years from now after he has earned 3 AAs, with a single finals appearance that of course is a loss I think we could have some fun with that.

I’m sure this has been stated long before I showed up, but with all the macho bluster I’ve read recently on GIA, I love the never-noted irony that Iowa doesn’t even win the 2021 title without 1st (Lee), 2nd (Kem), and 3rd (ADS) place medals from Pennsylvania HS champs.

It's not like Arujau was doing terrible at 125. A 4th and 3rd place finish with 5 out of his 6 losses to Glory and Rivera. (Even Spencer lost to Rivera twice....)

I'll say it.

Vito was the best we have seen him, and I have long thought he had the talent to be a multi-timer.

However, I am not convinced that was a fully motivated and healthy RBY either. If you get to the finals you are dancing on a razor's edge unless you are a Zain.

Coming back when you don't have to makes it hard to remain totally committed and focused. RBYs celebrity, NIL commitments, social media, and diversions into his incredible life story on Flo are distractions as well. Plus I hear he was injured in the quarters.

I really don't want to take anything away from Vito as he earned it with his path, taking out the two best. He is the first guy who has looked faster than RBY. I think RBY was a little off in that match. He had no answer for Vito's quickness which seems quite uncharacteristic. Cael didn't seem all that suprised either and was more than pleased with RBYs year. Not much talk about his not reaching his goals, etc... more complimentary about coming back for the team and delivering.

"Not fully motivated RBY" is on the ballot for the Bad Take Hall of Fame.

Pretty sure Willie already said he was only using them as examples on his show.
Yep they were mashed as hypotheticals just to work the ORS angle.

To be honest if it's not more than $500 this is a nothing burger. A half season off just means a few guys will be in a healthier state for nationals.

The hazard being Brand's discovering peaking is not just a frame of mind. A few half year suspensions could prove quite beneficial to the program for years to come.
