Lock Franklin up Long Term!!!

At this point Franklin at PSU is like Richt at Georgia. He brought a great program back to national prominence, but might not have what it takes to get over the hump and win a National Championship.
Then Smart came along at got them to the NC. Think Andy Reid or Mary Shottenheimer - clearly good coaches but it’s different skills to make a team really good versus a champion.

I got this tidbit from a friend who is a significant booster to the program. So its second hand info so don't put too much stock into it. He says it is most likely FSU won't be able to offer Franklin what it would take to leave. Franklin's interest is only because he sees a more fertile recruiting area. Take it for what it's worth.

This seems to be what I can gauge from reading around FSU boards. Franklin seems to know the amount he can expect from an extension and FSU isn’t going to be able to match or exceed. Between the Taggart buyout and a lower than expected donation fund, FSU is focusing on some other candidates.

It definitely sounds like he was interested - there are claims he interviewed twice. Apparently he’s a fan of the area and his family’s beach house is only an hour outside of Tallahassee. There might be some doubts in his mind about the ceiling of Penn State.

I think interviewing during the season should be disallowed. The coach owes it to the team to be focused on the game(s) ahead.

Let’s please put this into perspective.

Franklin is elite! Penn State is so close to Bama, O$U, Clemson, Georgia, LSU, and Oklahoma. They are CFB’s elite.

IF PSU wins its next two games they will have won 42 games from 2016-19.

IF they were to win 11 games next year, it will be the winningest 5 yr stretch in school history!

I’m a JoeBot but I can not deny what is taking place. Franklin has returned PSU to prominence. Lock this guy up long term. WTF!

When we lose a big time recruit a lot of posters on this board say we don't want kids that don't want to be here. Do we want a coach who doesn't want to be here? I'd definitely like to lock CJF up long term but it concerns me that he would even be considering other jobs. Of course we don't know the details of what's going on behind the scenes. I'd just like to hear Franklin say things like this is his dream job and he can't see wanting to coach anywhere else.

Rankings the last 4 seasons:
2016 7th
2017 8th
2018 17th
2019 12th (so far)

Average ranking 11th (excludes lean years)
Franklin's pay 11th

It doesn't seem that far out of line to me and it's scheduled to increase.

"Compared to other coaches in the nation, his current salary for the 2017 season would not place him in the top 10. However, starting in 2019 and based on current figures, Franklin would jump to the fourth highest paid coach in the nation behind Alabama’s Nick Saban, Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh, and Ohio State’s Urban Meyer. Obviously things will change in other coaches’ contracts between now and the next two years, but that’s where he currently stands."

He uses the interest from other programs to get upgrades for the program. And a nice bump for himself. Extension will be announced soon.

A good agent will always negotiate down the coach’s buyout to give their client maximum flexibility; the better the coach, the lower the number. Saban can quit at any time and go to another school and he would owe Bama nothing. If the university fired him without cause, they owe him $33M.

at some point a school will say we do not even need a buyout clause. we can decide that you cannot break our contract. you can not show for work, and we can continue to pay you while you sit at home. you are not a slave (i.e. the 14th amendment argument against employment contracts), but we can absolutely prevent you from going somewhere else.

At one point, as some may recall, Mark Richt was rumored to be the frontrunner for the PSU job after the SHTF in 2011. Now you tell me, elf, who you would rather see leading the Penn State program between Mark Richt and James Franklin.

Please don't bring facts and rational thoughts to this board. It is NOT what we do here.

No doubt

Haters are only happy when the spew their hate

If JF left for USC, they would hate the next coach

JF has done an outstanding job and should be rewarded with a significant contract extension

Unfortunately the negative 5% will continue to criticize no matter who the coach is

Interviewed twice? Come on dude. That alone disqualified the claim.

Actually it was 5 in his first 20. '68, '69, '73, '82, '86 and 6 in his first 28 with '94. Franklin has 14 years to match 5 in his first 20. Good luck with that.
So we’re UCF now, just claiming our own NC’s? We won in 82 and 86 and that’s it, officially. And that was a different time...no scholarship limits, only a handful of programs dominated, we weren’t in a conference....it’s apples and oranges comparing Joe and Franklin.

He's generally a very good poster in my view. I just don't get some of his dislike/hate for certain things.
I don’t hate anything and I certainly don’t hate Joe....I loved the guy and was very happy with him as a coach....although I think he stayed too long. I also like Franklin a lot and I think too many on here remember a time that hasn’t been true for over 30 years. Joe was a great coach through the 80’s, then outside of a couple of years he was a pretty good coach, but not great. Remembering a 20 year window out of a 47 year career and then judging Franklin based on that chunk of time is not fair (and Joe never dealt with sanctions).

See above, and I would also add 1994 to this.

P.S. I support Franklin and hope he stays for a long time. Just don't get the denigration of Paterno's accomplishments as a means of pumping him up. He doesn't need it.
I just think too many remember a Joe’s career in a way that it really wasn’t for a long period of time.

If Franklin is “elite” what does that make Saban, Sweeney, Smart, and Riley?

According to NJ.com he’s already gone and will announce next week. Other names mentioned have been taken down and only Franklin remains as a viable candidate. Smoke, yeah there’s been a lot of smoke for a while now.

This is beyond stupid. So, some NJ Rutgers beat writer has scooped the PSU and FSU media types on the fact that CJF is headed to FSU?

Then, we are supposed to believe that CJF has come to an agreement with FSU but both parties are going to keep this a secret for over a month while CJF coaches PSU to their bowl game? Or, even more ridiculous is the idea that CJF will publicly accept the FSU job, but stay at PSU, sign a new class on 12/18, and then head to FSU after 1/1?

Yep, that all makes sense to me.

I saw the thread title and thought that CJF had committed a capital crime.

That's the same BS that's been floating around for a couple days now! He, and his agent, are doing their jobs! Getting as much out of the contract that they can get!

Not sure how the writer would be scooping anything when he’s using a story that was released last week.

Get back to me when Franklin has 4 undefeated seasons and NO national championships. Whatever will you say then, huh?

No, we're not UCF .. WE ARE .. PENN STATE, 6 time national champs as far as I'm considered!!

No more contact extensions. This same crap every year needs to end.

If he doesn't want to be here then leave.

I really doubt you're a true fan of PSU since you enjoy belittling it's greatest coach ever so much. But that's just who you are.

Yes, I'll give Joe credit for such phenomenal accomplishments that you begrudge him. Again, TO ME he won 6 titles, and that's official enough.

I don’t belittle him, he was a great coach and a great man. Unfortunately he did not win 6 titles as much as we all wish he did. And if you were a true PSU fan you wouldn’t bash our current coach.

Fortunately he did win 6 titles (see my previous posts).

Fortunately I didn't bash Franklin. Speaking truth and facts cannot possibly be bashing someone.

Unfortunately you didn't wait until Franklin had 4 undefeated seasons without a NC to get back to me which fortunately for me means I'll never hear from you again.

Unfortunately for you, you did belittle Joe. So that adds liar to your resume.

My dad would take me hunting every Saturday during small game season starting in the 50's and I would walk behind him when I was too young to carry a gun. We ALWAYS had to be back to the car before 1:00 pm so we could listen to the first half while we ate lunch. That's when I became a Penn State fan, 65 years ago.

Implying that 27 years of Joe's career were essentially so, so is very belittling to the greatest college coach ever, the one who won 409 games.

I didn’t say so so, I said through the 80’s he was a great coach...after that he was very good but not great. Did you not learn to read in all those years?

You're the one who can't read, I said you implied they were so, so and any rational person reading post #58 would agree. You're a Joe hater trying t cover his _ss and you know it too!

I am not a Joe hater....I’m just tired of people with selective memory regarding Joe.
