Match thread for ASU

Nick Lee would like to have a word with you.
Jeesh. I said as much in my first post on this subject (315).

I pointed out that Zain, Bo, and Jason’s point production will be missed, making dual meets more competitive. A few (you?) seemed to interpret that as a put down of the current roster. It wasn’t.

Here are the career pin stats through last season, courtesy of pennstatewrestlingclub.org:

Wrestler/# of pins/% of matches
Nolf 60 50.4%
Nickal 59 48.4
Retherford 53 42.1%
Taylor 53 38.7%
Ruth 46 33.6%
Rasheed 28 35.0%
Hall 34 34.0%

Besides Rasheed and Hall, no other current member of the team makes the top 25 pinners list. I hope Nick Lee (or one of his teammates) changes that by time he graduates.

The numbers for TFs and MDs are slightly different (Taylor and Ruth rank much higher) but paint the same general picture. The website is worth a visit.

Overall, not an unfair critique. One point is way off. Cassar was 1 inch away from pinning Sasquatch, the #5 ranked heavyweight. Cassar is and will continue to be "The Standard".

Agreed! Cassar will be bonus machine for us this year. He is that good! Lee will churn the bonus as I believe Cenzo will as well. With Zahid finally being weighed properly at 184/197 where he belongs, it is smooth sailing for Mark to the NC at 174.

There's a reason why our 60 match win streak was one of the longest in wrestling history ... it's damn tough to win every time out at this level. Tip your hat to ASU for getting the job done and get back to work. Nothing to see here.

We had to forefeit a weight! If we don't do that, ASU loses. Let's re-wrestle in Feb when we had Rasheed and Berge and this match isn't close!

Sorry, I was little punchy from all the negative nancies throwing in the towel on Teske and Verk for the season already last night.

Pennstatewrestlingclub is a great website. As is wrestlestat. I'm not saying Lee is going to turn into Zain but I do see him getting a lot more pins this season. Also, keep these bonus stats in mind:

Zain
Year 1 - 40%
Year 2 - redshirt
Year 3 - 89%

Lee
Year 1 - 63%
Year 2 - 69%
Year 3 - ? (I betcha he'll end up in the high 70s, low 80s)

No worries.

Nick Lee is one of my favorites. He improves every year, has a great work rate, and represents PSU with class and dignity. I suspect he’s a terrific teammate.

Here’s a few more stats I put together using data from the website. It lists a few current and former PSU wrestlers in order of their bonus point wins (pins, TFs, and MDs) as a percentage of total matches. In addition to showing what special talents the top 5 guys were, I think it also demonstrates that Lee is underrated.

Wrestler/Pins/TFs/MDs/% Bonus Point Victories
Taylor 53 42 30 91.2%
Nolf 60 27 16 86.6%
Nickal 59 12 23 76.4%
Ruth 46 25 33 74.8%
Retherford 53 22 20 73.6%
Lee 14 14 25 66.3%
Rasheed 28 6 16 61.7%
Hall 34 13 15 60.8%
Joseph 21 11 16 57.8%

Overall, not an unfair critique. One point is way off. Cassar was 1 inch away from pinning Sasquatch, the #5 ranked heavyweight. Cassar is and will continue to be "The Standard".
Also, HWT is the hardest weight to pick up TF or pin when needed to win a dual

Kyle Snyder couldn't meet that standard either.

Especially against a good wrestler. Hall wasn't going to hit a Rachal.

...
Wrestler/Pins/TFs/MDs/% Bonus Point Victories
Taylor 53 42 30 91.2%
...
Retherford 53 22 20 73.6%
Lee 14 14 25 66.3%
Rasheed 28 6 16 61.7%
Hall 34 13 15 60.8%
Joseph 21 11 16 57.8%
So 60% of the time, the Big 5 minus Cassar bonus all the time! :)

PS, where are Cassar’s numbers? Cassar would like a word with you! ;) :)

Hey guys we almost beat the #5 team in the country with 1/2 a team. No need to panic other than if you are in Iowa.

18-19 nail biter

That same match at full strength

149 Garnder loses a decision 18-19 but at least we are entertained (sorry had to do it)
157 Berge gets a decision. 21-16
184 Shak looses a decision. 21-13
197 Beard wins by Major. 25-10

The whole team is at late season conditioning and skill say January 31st shape we probably carve out 3-5 more points in bonus.

Teaming up with Cali_Nittany, are you? ;)

I like working with numbers, but I’m too lazy to put together a spreadsheet for the whole team. But here are Cassar’s figures: 6 pins, 2 TFS, 20 MDs through the end of last season. Thus, he’s bonused in 56% of his 50 matches. Those numbers will undoubtedly improve this season, but Cassar has a long way to go to get in the rarified air of the “big 5”.

I look forward to calling the Big Five the Five Finalists after NCAAs. :)

Thank you for the great stats!

I am not convinced Gardner losses that match.

I was noodling with a few numbers while I watched the football game :( and thought I’d share them.

I calculated the team points scored per match by a select group of past and current PSU wrestlers. For example, David Taylor had 53 pins (53 x 6), 42 TFs (42 x 5), 30 MDs (30 x 4), and 9 Ds (9 x 3). I then subtracted 6 points for his two losses by decision to Dake and 6 for his loss to Jenkins. That’s 663 total points, which I then divided by Taylor’s 137 career bouts. That comes to 4.84 points per match. For purposes of this exercise, I treated tournament wins and losses the same as dual wins and losses. That may be the wrong way to do it, but here’s the list:

Nolf 4.91 (60 pins, 27 TFs, 16 MDs, 14 Ds, 3 Ls)
Taylor 4.84 (53 pins, 42 TFs, 30 MDs, 9 Ds, 3 Ls)
Nickal 4.67 (59 pins, 12 TFs, 23 MDs, 26 Ds, 3 Ls)
Retherford 4.57 (53 pins, 22 TFs, 20 MDs, 31 Ds, 3 Ls)
Ruth 4.44 (46 pins, 25 TFs, 33 MDs, 32 Ds, 3 Ls)
Hall 4.11 (34 pins, 13 TFs, 15 MDs, 35 Ds, 5 Ls)
Joseph 3.60 (21 pins, 11 TFs, 16 MDs, 27 Ds, 8 Ls)
Cassar 3.48 (6 pins, 2 TFs, 20 MDs, 19 Ds, 3 Ls)
Lee 3.28 (14 pins, 14 TFs, 25 MDs, 16 Ds, 11 Ls)
Rasheed 3.27 (28 pins, 6 TFs, 16 MDs, 16 Ds, 15 Ls)

For the current wrestlers, data are through the Army tournament. Also, it’s entirely possible, in fact probable, that a few of my calculations are slightly off - I was distracted by the football game.

A few quick observations:

1. By this (admittedly incomplete) measure, Nolf is the GOAT at PSU! :) (And that’s with a deduction of 6 points for his “loss” to Van Brill.)
2. On average, Nolf and Nickal were good for 9.6 team points per dual. Crazy good!
3. In comparison, the Taylor-Ruth combo was good for 9.3 points per dual. Crazy good, too!
4. Yesterday, the PSU wrestlers at 157 and 197 scored a combined -6. (That figure is subject to a number of caveats — small sample size, Pipher filling in for Berge at 157, Conel working to regain his form, past performance not necessarily indicative of future performance, etc.) Anyway, that’s a 15.6 point spread relative to the Nolf-Nickal average. Tough, though not impossible, hole to fill, especially if there are injuries elsewhere in the lineup.

Pretty sure Lee got bonus as much as Nolf and Nickal when it mattered most last season. Guessing he is now going to flirt with matching the placement this year.

Just before canceling my Fubo trial, I grabbed a couple of memorable exchanges from the dual. Thought I'd share.

This was pretty nuts how methodical, technical, and dominant it was, IMO

Oh, what could have been! Still, my screengrab at 29FPS wasn't fast enough to show Anthony start his double.
So. Dang. Fast.

I love the guy in the front row who just assumes it was all over a little prematurely. He's obviously been paying attention to the last 10 years.
