Match thread for ASU

If we knew Shak wasn’t going to be able to go then why did he make the trip instead of another 184? Not saying Hoopes could do better than the forfeit, but it gives you a chance. Ironhead says they weren’t game playing, so something had to prevent Edsell from being able to go.

It sucks to lose the streak, but this is far from a full strength team losing tonight. No excuse - you have to put a winning team on the mat - but there is some cause for concern. Too early to panic on Teske, but he has less offense than I’d hoped to see. Not sure how hurt Conel is or how hard he’s working to make weight, but he looks shaky and gassed so far. But you don’t need to be your best until March. #MichealBeardpleasereporttomat1 #dangyouNickSuriano #trusttheprocess

I don't think Cael lost his mind over the summer so I'll wait it out and watch the season. I was surprised @ the forfeit instead of allowing a sub to give it a try but, again, I'm not Cael. I was able to see the match online but almost wish I hadn't as it was uninspired in general, flat. I realize this was the Super Bowl for ASU and they have a very good team which match up with our wrestlers well. I'm always surprised at how much larger some of their wrestlers appear vs. our men at the same weight class. Guess I won't ever understand that. Next up, wrestle away. WE ARE

Oh well. Great run Of dual wins

I think everyone realized this would be a better tournament team (at full strength) than dual this year. Still like our chances in March

I think back to 2015. Cael shirted Bo, Jason, and Nick. We were all very understanding at that time.

Now we are spoiled to the point that we can’t accept a transition of sorts. One thing that I have learned is that Cael and company are some of the smartest and most strategic. I’m certainly not going to question them.

RBY needed bonus with his whole entourage there, didn't happen, verk wins spot-doesn't capitalize on chance, forfeit is strange, and Conel is just not in shape...and there you have it..

Losing the streak sucks but obviously they weren't overly concerned with it. ASU wanted it more. Thought AC had the pin, that would have been awesome. I think ultimately this will be a good thing. It will be a wakeup call and relight that fire. Outside of Lee, Cenzo, Hall everyone looked sluggish or gassed including AC. Conditioning will come, Berge and Shak obviously needed. Conels not right, Beard has to be better, would think once Cael feels Beard is ready he pulls the shirt. I understand his desire not to. Teske at least gives hope of a W. I like Luke at 149. It's hard to love watching Verk when he is so low energy. Dealing with his issue would have to suck. Cant believe they lost. I miss Bo and Nolf!

Congrats to ASU. They did the job in the matches that mattered. The large crowd and the celebration at the end augers positively for their program going forward.

Seeing how a couple of injuries can make a team vulnerable makes the 60 match win streak more amazing.

One other thing. I really am going to miss PSU being at the Scuffle.

I told you Cael cares less about duals than the big picture. One might even wonder if he didn't want this streak hanging over their heads going into the Iowa match. Now they can focus differently.

Well, better the streak is beaten by Az than Iowa.

Too bad we are so banged up. I have no concerns with Shak but I am quietly getting more concerned about Berge. Very strange for Cael to mention a that couple of weeks back, they could not see his head get hit even on the video. I really hope there is nothing more to that story.

Teske and Verk need a lot of work. I would rather see Gardener fight and lose than to sleep through more Verk loses. The kid is exceptionally good he just needs to know it in his own mind and open it up. At this level you can't plan to win matches by a point and that is how he wrestles every time.

As for Conel ... Would love to give him the benefit of the doubt and hope another month will make a difference, but he is light years away from where he was in March 2018, where some think that was just his biorythms aligning in a perfect storm performance he could never repeat again. He is clearly out of shape and his heart didn't seem in this one.

MVPs - Nick Lee for sure starting to cause me double takes thinking it is Zain out there.

Honorable mention Mark, despite the takedown.

In closing Cassar was a few centimeters away but the streak was an ego thing for all of us, I will take 9 out of 10 any day. I am kind of glad to see it in the rear view mirror. Now we can focus on what's ahead not what's behind.

I suspect losing the dual streak is a bigger deal for us than our coaches
Exactly. This match kinda blows that theory over on HR that Cael only cares about winning. That Cael doesnt care about his wrestlers and their health. If what they say is true, Shak and Berge would have been on the mat. Agree, the win streak is not whats important to Cael....us maybe... but not him

I know JB mentioned it several times but the notion of PSU somehow "game playing" Zahid/ASU by weighing in Shak seems pretty ridiculous.

Thought Joseph looked better tonight than in any match last year. Loved the fire in Hall after giving up initial takedown. Teske not quite there but he doesn’t quit. Feel bad for Conel given it is his last go round. I don’t think he quit like some others have said....he just flat out gassed early.

Is tomorrow the deadline for pulling a shirt or something? Everyone panicking about Conel and wanting to rip Beard’s shirt off like Cael is not watching and evaluating? Like the decision is already made?

Deep breaths folks. We are gathering data and training and growing. Decisions will be made when appropriate for the team, not when you freak out about a bad result or two.

Pull Beards shirt. Shak is ok. Just my guess from what I’m seeing. Love if true Shak being ok. Finalist potential for the next 5 years at 84. Cant wait to see Brooks unleashed next year

Conel absolutely did not quit. He held on to keep it to a dec.... I just sadly think he’s cooked physically

I'll cheer on whoever our 197 is. I don't think Beard is quite ready yet... but Conel is not good.

Hey, DMM, you were right in the part where you said this is a different feeling kind of year!

(Not different from the early championship seasons when we were losing duals to Minny, but different from the recent seasons for sure.)

don't really give a dam about the win streak, dont think the coaches do either. just want the best team for March. 126- nothing we can do, 149 would rather see Gardner, 197 pull the shirt! ASU wrestled inspired, and we wrestled a little flat with half our eventual starters on the mat. No big deal , might actually help in the end! positive infinity!:D:D

Yeah someone finally calibrated the scales and weighted Zahid properly and found he was actually 197lbs all along! Good news for Mark this year with Zahid moving up, he should cruise to the NC!!

I think RBY was probably too hacked up being home. You see guys gas quite often in big situations. You just get too hyped.

Verk was bad strategy. Kept looking for reversal instead of escaping. Close match you have to get the one. I'm sure that will be a coaching point.

Until they get guys back at 157 & 184 it will be a struggle.

Kind of spoiled having the pinners that PSU has had. Those points can pick up a lot of guys.

As everyone is saying , it is early.

If healthy, the team is strong at 133, 141, 157, 165, 174, 184 and heavyweight. That will win most duals and gives the team a fighting chance come March. At the same time, the loss of Zain two years ago and Bo and Nolf last year was big. Not only did the three of them win all the time, they were bonus-point machines. The current lineup doesn’t have as much of that big-point capability. As good as Lee, Joseph, Hall and Cassar are, they don’t put up points like Zain, Nolf and Bo. (Who does, though Nick Lee may be getting there?) As a result, duals against quality teams like ASU are going to be closer. Health of the wrestlers, always critical, will be even more so this year. The margin of error is tighter.

Zahid probably pins Edsel but unless there was a medical reason for it, I don’t know why you don’t at least put him out there. Guessing he figured Conel would likely win so the points wouldn’t hurt..

We’ll see how quick the stall calls are here

WOAHHH!!! You coming at the Twist like that??? You do realize that I am from Bergen Catholic which means the BEST HS WRESTLING IN THE UNITED STATES!!!! The Twist knows his grapplin!!! I don't like to brag because I am a very humble guy, but there is a reason why Robbie Howard is on his way to PSU to shore us up at 125!!! Let's just say that the Twist worked his magic!

David Taylor and Ed Ruth.

Not to be flip about it ... Zain, Jason, and Bo put up bonus at all-time rates. Not PSU all-time. All-time.

Approaching their rates is still very good, and we have several at that level.
