Midlands Discussion Thread

Was pointing his finger in the faces of the PENN coaches as he walked by. Couldn't tell what he was saying. Also the standard posturing over Ferrante. Typical Desanto stuff.
What a dueshebag. Can't wait for him to get beat. I bet he loses it and gets suspended. He's a loose cannon is is an accident waiting to happen

149 is so wide open. The #1 guy should have lost to Iowa's backup ... If Verk can get it together, there is points to be had at that class.

Austin O'Connor almost lost to Jaren Glosser, Iowa's back up 149. He was down 5-2 at one point actually, escaped, Glosser got hit with his 2nd stalling and OC got a takedown with like 15 seconds left. Brock Mauller just lost this morning to an unranked kid also. That class is so wide open it's not even funny.

This is Hernandez's 3rd year (RS SO). Heading into Midlands, he had 4 career wins over wrestlers with winning records in that season. One was a backup, and another was a shirting true freshman. None of his victims had qualified for NCAAs in their careers.
So he is a slouch? So it’s a bad loss for RBY? Do freestyle results mean anything in a folk style match up?

brands lose?

Braunagel beat him (Brands) with a late takedown. Showed some of Brands' limitations. Wrestles with a lot of forward pressure (See JP's post earlier for way better explanation), but Braunagel is a guy who will throw that right back at you.

Brands lost the handfighting the whole match, couldn't get past the head at all (how there was no blood time is beyond me) much less the head/hands.

Looked to me like Braunagel had him pretty worn down late in the third, came through with a nice double.

Tough match, not much offense at all on either side

(Edit to add: Some Nolf-ian head snaps from Brands all match, just couldn't get anything done from them)

Nelson Brands loses in the Quarters at Midlands.

He almost lost in the round before. Feeling even better about our chances at NCAAs. Hopefully Cassar is ok.

Well, I had been thinking Elam migjt have added some size and muscle over the summer, as it was his biggest deficiency last season. If he's bigger, I couldn't tell yesterday. He had nothing on bottom for Cassioppi, and it was pointless to try shooting on him.

Stencel seemed to fart around in his quarters match, had me scratching my head wondering what had happened to the pinning beast I watched last year. Literally less than 10 secs later, he plowed his guy for a feet-to-back stick and what I would give a magnitude 7.5 on the Richter Scale.

Hillger looked solid. Isley put it on Heino more than I would have expected, though Heino did not look good in the process -- not sure he is 100%. Anyway, the semis are stacked, and I'm looking forward to seeing who steps up to give Cassioppi a match.

Stencel is defiantly a guy you do not want to get out of position with. He is powerful and can end it in a heartbeat.

My mouse wheel's about worn thin. I've scrolled faster & farther at BWI this year than ever before.

The Iowa resurgence has their fans feeling their oats and we have too many people over here (and over there, we certainly own a chunk of the blame) more than willing to get down into the mud with them. I end up skipping entire pages on actual wrestling threads searching for an end to the nonsense.

Unfortunately, these types of things rarely get better. Our boards are bordering on a mutually assured destruction death spiral plunging us into never ending pissing contests with wrestling discussion as a mere pretense. Okay, that’s maybe a little dramatic, but that’s how things tend to go online... Gotta love the internet!

Stencil pinned Cass at Midlands last year so it will be interesting to see if there is a different result this time.
Cass was pretty sloppy last year. It lead to him forcing some situations and getting falls against some decent guys but did not bode well when wrestling Stencil. Have to figure he tightens it up against these dangerous type of HWTs. Kind of like he did against Elam.

I agree with this from bigs22 post above:

I've said this before, but I think we need a thread for all of the Iowa and PSU fans that derive tremendous pleasure in snarky posts, to say whatever they want, and leave the rest of this board to the majority of PSU fans who just want to talk wrestling. There are a lot of great Iowa fans and a lot of great PSU fans who love wrestling far more than one-upping someone else's post.

Cass is much improved in his positioning and decision-making. While he can still be beaten, it will not be because he beats himself with risky maneuvers like what I remember in his losses to Heino and Stencel last year.

I could still see him lose a match like that. He still has some reckless abandon in him. Definitely more controlled this year however.
