Midlands Discussion Thread

Looking forward to the semis. So far there have been very few ranked on ranked matches.

Hey are any rs freshman going to the scuffle or any guys who haven't wrestle in a long time ,berge, cenzo or maybe even shackur ? Probably no because we should have heard something.

Cass is a monster. Quick feet for such a large man and seems to have found the right mix of understanding how to be aggressive while limiting his risks. He has really emerged as a threat for the next four years.
I do not hold Nelson Brands in nearly as high of a position as many on here. I think he will be a multi time AA, but highly doubt we ever see him reach top 3 at NCAA.

The guy who really looks like he has star potential is Assad. This kid is improving on the fly and looks like he will be a cornerstone the next several years.

What a dueshebag. Can't wait for him to get beat. I bet he loses it and gets suspended. He's a loose cannon is is an accident waiting to happen
It seems like you really really want this to happen. That reflects poorly on you imo.

However, his sportsmanship in his losses last year was much better than when he won lol. Lost to Gomez. No issues. Lost to Fix. No issues. Lost to Lizak. No issues. Lost to Suriano. No issues. Lost to Micic. No issues. Lost to Pletcher. No issues. Every time he shakes hands and walks off the mat. It's when he gets too ramped up after a win, that he sometimes has some issues.

I hate to even write this since I know the responses could just create more worthless banter but is there any reason to be worried he is less than 100%? I thought last year he wrestled without the knee brace at the end of the year but I have been wrong before.

I just find it hard to believe he would go against US senior level guys when he had already qualified a spot and then MFF out of a college tournament (I know both are tough). I guess the counter to that argument is that he gained seeding points for the trials by winning that tournament and a MFF in this really does not hurt him at all.

Really poorly on me keep trying that isn't going to work. The kid is a loose cannon and just because I don't condone his behavior does not reflect poorly on my character it's actually the opposite. I don't care if he goes all season doing great it's the one that he doesn't that matters and it has happened enough already this year that indicates there's still an issue

I believe the word is he needs 17 matches to qualify a spot for the weight for NCAAs. Sounds like this was the plan from the get go. As an Iowa fan, I would have rather him just not go.

Keep trying to will it into being. The rest of us normal adults aren't whipping ourselves into a frenzy because Austin Desanto briefly pointed at the Penn corner from 15 feet away after they said something to him. If he does something actually bad, I'll be the first to condemn it.

Normal. That's funny coming g from an Iowa fan. Not willing anything it is what it is. If he never acts out then great I'm happy for him. Not going to debate it any further you have your opinion I have mine. I agree to disagree

As a fan of the sport, knowing Spencer is wrestling a Snyder Schedule this year, I'm very OK with this.

I'd much rather see him at Yarygin than at Midlands.

Not true. Only 8 bouts are needed to earn a slot for the conference (Silver Standard). Spencer has 6, so will easily earn the spot with two more bouts.

You are thinking of Gold Standard, which requires 15 bouts this year. Gold and Silver Standards earn slots.

This is Hernandez's 3rd year (RS SO). Heading into Midlands, he had 4 career wins over wrestlers with winning records in that season. One was a backup, and another was a shirting true freshman. None of his victims had qualified for NCAAs in their careers.

Valdiviez just blanked Hernandez 16-0.

So regarding Spencer’s MFF. I have no problem with it, get a couple matches, no real benefit to winning midlands (and continue his 0-midlands is fun, like Cenzo at Bigs).

But that brings me to Kemerer. I understand the pitch count thing, no reason to overly tax him after the injury. But I would have thought he would do the same 2/3 matches and forfeit. Makes me wonder if there is more to it than they are letting on. Hope not, he’s fun to watch, but it just caught my attention.

Spencer Lee MFFs out at Midlands

Even as a hawk fan this is ridiculous.
Can't think of a college coach that does this more then Brands
Not too this extent, but Gable was innocent of this either

Did they change it this year? Last year, coaches ranking required only 5 matches with 1 in last 30 days?
Coaches ranking is the same as last year … 5 bouts at the contested weight, and one must be within the past 30 days. The "8 bouts" comes from the minimal required bouts for Silver Standard. Win %, with 8 bouts required, becomes the 2nd criteria that must be met. Btw, forfeits and medical forfeits count towards Win %, unlike RPI, where they are removed from the bout count and the calculation.

Then I really don't get it. Maybe he woke up with a sore knee or something? Hard to justify.

One thing that might be in play, if wrestler is not likely to beat the scale, it is better for the team face to Med FFT and retain the points than to mow the weight and lose them all.

Not sure if this is the case but it happens more than you might think

Gonna go out on a limb and predict Iowa will win by more than Spencer's points.

Only 15 needed for RPI this year.

He's got 5 now
+
9 Duals left
+
B1Gs
=
at least 17 possible
-
whatever he misses on the Snyder Schedule

the guy doing mat 3 sounds like he is under the weather and congested....

the brands v wilke match not exactly entertaining
Watching this bout too. Tied 1-1, end of regulation. Only one decent shot, defended well.

After watching the Brands Wilke match I know why I wanted to know the result, but holy never touch a leg in regulation batman, I can't figure out why I wanted to watch that.
