Midlands Discussion Thread

It's a bummer but totally understand not wrassling Lee.

Hoping Jessen can make up for the lack of shots in the Brands/Wilcke match. Although, he's still undersized (read: short) imo.

Cass is an animal. Some of his reckless abandon could be due to it simply not mattering what he did in HS, he'd win no matter what. He's a beast, but I imagine it'll take a little bit to hone the cautionary skills needed in college.

Rivera v. Gross soooooon!

Here is the document on qualifications.

There are 3 criteria (From others you have to hit 2 to get silver standard and qualify a spot for the conference tournament) - depending on where the cut off falls for a particular weight

Winning percentage: 8 division matches at the designated weight class makes sense to me but what is the NCAA Division I starters page on track wrestling?

RPI: 15 division I matches (same question about Division I Starters page

Coaches Rank: 5 DI matches in at designated weight (1 in last 30)

Hokit over Heino 10-2. I haven't seen enough of the latter to know if he is normally as lethargic, but he did not look to be all there.

Hudkins giving Glory a match!

5-5 in 3rd, Hudkins riding hard.

Review on illegal hold call.
Call stands, 6-5 Glory, 1:38 left.
Hudkins w/ boots in, looks to try to get RT as strategy to tie match.
Going OT @ 6-6.

Hudkins had Glory in a world of trouble, going for neutral danger TD, Glory cranked on leg, match stopped for knee injury to Hudkins. No TD awarded.

Hudkins can't continue. Glory wins by InjDef.

Oof, feel really bad for Hudkins there, he came back against Glory by reversing a riding time point, only to pull a muscle in SV pretty close to the TD.

Whoa, Gross lat-drops Rivera at edge to reverse his fortune. Now leads 8-6.

Rivera gets a stall point, and now confusion about whether a reversal was awarded, as well. Time has expired.

Extensive review. They do not give the reversal, Gross up 8-7 w/ 0:08
remaining.

Gross holds on for win, but brick thrown for a wanted 5-sec stall count on Gross. Being reviewed.

No-call upheld. Gross your winner, 8-7.

IDK what the heck happened there, someone much smarter than me can help, but Rivera looked great. Got caught for 6... but he won 6:40 of the match.

Gross wins 8-7 for now? Could have been a million stallings on Gross.

I don't understand why the ref in the Gross Seabass match kept starting and stopping the leg count on Gross when Gross was on the leg for over a minute. Rivera should've been given that point early on the scramble. And I thought there was possibly enough to give Rivera the reversal point but never saw the ref give those two, so I don't get how he gets them on review (and then got them taken away not long after). Overall it feels like Rivera deserved the W.

Gross vs Rivera was entertaining. Can Gross win vs DeSanto? Gross was handled in their first match-up, earlier this year.

What I saw from Gross in that match does not give me confidence he will beat DeSanto tonight. Still not protecting his legs, and often putting himself in precarious positions. If not for the lat-drop, Rivera was in line to win that one handily.

O'Connor in another tight one late, this time vs. Turk.

Going OT notted 1-1.

O'Connor in deep off the whistle, Turk defends well, eventually escapes out of bounds. Being reviewed for possible toe-drag TD.

TD awarded, O'Connor wins.

Coleman going right at Young, 2-1 early.

Coleman close on a couple of slide-bys, but Young defends successfully. Pace now slowing with under 30 secs left in 1st. Period ends 2-1, Coleman.

Escape Young, 2-2. Coleman attempted a shot soon thereafter but was stuffed. Young w/ shot later, but Coleman kicked out. 2nd period ends 2-2.

Escape Coleman, 3-2. RT not a factor. Young in on a shot, converts, takes 4-3 lead. Coleman escapes, 4-4. RT still not a factor, 0:50 left. Young stalking, but nothing further. Going OT.

Coleman fights off extended shot attempt. Young shoots again, in deep, but Coleman holding leg, crazy scramble, and The Squirrel comes out on top and sticks Coleman.

I really did not expect O'Connor to get that call. The call was a no brainer, but still.

McFadden & Wick up.

Great, extended scramble, McFadden comes out on top w/ 1:00 left. Wick reverses, almost puts himself in position to go for backs. But period ends 2-2.

Wick rides w/ legs. Stalemate. McFadden granbies, works for reversal, 4-2. Wick reverses, 4-4. Rides out period for 0:15 sec RT.

Wick escape, 5-4. Wick in deep, scramble, gets crazy, couple of head-to-toe situations, McFadden secures TD with 0:02 remaining. Wins 6-5.

Young vs. Coleman had a F*n OT. Seems like if you can weather the storm for Coleman you can get to him later, he shot out of the cannon hard.

Agreed. Weird match. I thought Rivera had an escape and td.

Assad is the dude at 184 if the Hawks are all in. If only because he has offense.

Cassioppi & Isley up now.

Isley w/ quick low double for 2. Escape Cass, 2-1. Isley in deep on blast single, converts after a scramble, 4-1. Escape Cass, 4-2. Cass TD in closing 10
secs, 4-4.

Cass escapes to start 2nd, now up 5-4. Isley has some man size, will be interesting to see if his lungs hold up . . . and then a TD for Cass, 7-4. Cass flattens him out on restart, but Isley evetually powers up for an escape. Period ends 7-5, Cass with 0:29 RT.

Isley chooses neutral. Backfire -- Cass with TD, goes up 9-5. Now over a minute on RT. Isley gassing, stall point to Cass, 10-5. Time expires just as Cass puts Isley to back. 11-5 final score.

Shak can absolutely win 97 (if healthy). Such a winnable weight. Both Brucki & Warner lose.

Stencel & Hillger up.

TD Stencel, 2-0. I believe I heard Hillger already warned for stalling in neutral before the TD. Stencel rides out, has 1:57 of RT. He is LARGE.

Escape Stencel, 3-0. Stencel defends distance shot easily. Then another, and is warned for stalling. Stencel in deep, defended as time expires.

Hillger chooses neutral, but gives up TD, 5-0. RT locked up for Stencel. Hillger has nothing on bottom. Stencel rides out for 6-1 win on 3:19 of RT. Whoa.

Before that bout, his best win was 3-2 over #65 (WrestleStat), and he has two losses. One is against #30, the other is against a wrestler from Grand View, an NAIA School. Odds are he would not be a point scorer at NCAA's, and before that, is an unlikely qualifier.

Are they doing the consolation semifinals and 7th place matches yet this session? It would look like that according to the schedule posted on Northwestern website but I don't even see anybody warming up when they pan to other mats.

EDIT: I just saw Rivera walk in front of a camera with his singlet and they now have those matches listed in upcoming on FloArena.

You get a chance to watch Elam/Hokit? Hokit rode Elam for eternity. I was half watching on the quad screen. I'd love to know how much Hokit weighed in, he looked tiny.

I missed that one, but saw a couple
of Hokit's other matches. Yeah, he is small for the weight. Seems athletic enough to dominate a lot of guys, but I doubt he can do much with the big heavies that have talent to match.

hopefully @wildlizard is paying attention and keeping a tally of all my good deeds

I love the last match for Abe Assad. Opened it up at the end.
At times he wrestles on his feet at the upper weights like a light guy. I dont know where he settles out with his weight but he will make an ncaa finals if not multiple.

Battles w AB could be epic

You meant to say before this tournament, not this bout. Well, at least I think you did, maybe you didn't.
In his last three matches he has beaten (per Flo) #11, #19 and #21. He is going to finish ahead of (per Flo) #9, #12 and #13.
To me he looks like a talented true freshman in the middle of a steep learning curve.
But hey, mine is just an opinion.

I'm sure Iowa fans don't want to hear it, but this is the weakest Midlands field in years, isn't it?

Doing your best tHR poster impersonation.....last month Assad was a waste of a scholarship after a bad loss and Brands was the literal 3rd coming. Along the way neither of them has beaten $$$ and only now via a headlock Assad should lose his RS in a year they are favored going away to get the title.

that said if 184 is a flame out and PSU wins the title the 2nd guessers will be lit af on tHR.
