Cael is a great coach, no doubt. But if Brands is so bad, like a checkers player against a chess master, how has Iowa ever beat Penn St? He must be doing something right to beat the Grandmaster over 2 years of competition.
Okay. Brands is better than a bowl of doo doo. Happy now? #Lowaspirations

Well, yeah, Brands did something right. He accumulated talent via recruiting and transfers over a several-year period to build up to a single-season dream team. But now that dream-team season (2021) has passed. I know people like to harp on 2020 also being Iowa’s to claim, but PSU was going to be right there had the injury bug not struck. 2022 was only ever in the conversation for Iowa because of the free Covid year.

So, yeah, Brands built for 2020 and 2021, but 2021 was the pinnacle. Now, the question is how long will it take him to build another team like that?

EDIT: Oh, and I forgot to mention the 3” binder. Bupkis for Iowa if that hadn’t come along.

Obviously a joke bud. This board is nothing but complimentary of Kemerer's character because of what our wrestlers say and quite a few posters even have met him from his PA/Young Guns days.
My post wasn’t an indictment of your board but a response to Crabby’s comments on the subject.

Brands has addressed this.

Inadequately.

It's pretty simple
We have gone there in nonconference years and Brands has avoided reciprocating. He handles the scheduling the expense and the logistics to go elsewhere. It's pretty clear he would rather not go through all of that only to lose and have the long trip home in off years.

This way he only has to endure that misery every 3-4 years.

I myself had often wondered about how this lasting punchline about Iowa/Brands supposedly owing a trip to State College came about so I did some legwork. Here's what I have found:

Starting my search in 2000, Iowa and PSU wrestled and rotated every year until 2011, 6 home and 6 away matches with PSU hosting in 2011. In 2012, PSU hosted again, making in two in a row for PSU. The next year,(2013)they were not scheduled, which led to Brands and Cael having a twitter convo(below) in which Tom brought up that PSU owed them "two in a row", which Cael agreed and Iowa hosted.

Following years:

2014-Iowa
2015 -PSU
2016 - no match
2017 - Iowa
2018 - PSU
2019 - no match
2020 - Iowa
2021 - canceled - scheduled at PSU

As best as I can tell, the only discussion about the years where they weren't scheduled to wrestle (13,16,19) happened in 13. That year sure seems like it was understood between the two coaches that it would be in Iowa City to make up for the back to back years at PSU(11, 12).

It's possible that it happened, but I couldn't find any info about the two coaches having conversations in 16 or 19 to set up a dual. If anyone has that info, it would be very helpful...

Otherwise, my best guess is that over time, people only remembered that Cael and Tom worked together to schedule a meet when they were not on the schedule in 13, and that it was in Iowa City. Therefore, the next time they were not scheduled, it should happen and at PSU. However, if you look at what was actually discussed, the one and only time they did this, it was clear to both coaches that this was a make-up dual in Iowa City and the hosting was back to even...

Cael pretty damn funny in that reply! 😂

Isn’t he supposed to be an evil guy devoid of all humor per HR?

I honestly do not care what his explanation is, the fact is Brands and Cael talked, Cael brought his team, and we are still waiting for Brands.
As far as Brands addressing this, he has acknowledged he owes Cael a visit. He has never addressed why he could not be bothered reciprocating.
The reasoning was fairly obvious. The first opportunity Brands had to reciprocate PSU's visit was one of those years that PSU was going to just snot kick Iowa all over the place. Brands was very aware it would be a BJC event and prime time BTN broadcast and there was no way he was going to allow Iowa to take that beatdown in such a public forum. Always remember, Tom Brands only likes tough wrestling when his guys are the obvious bullies.

From a Track Wrestling article on 1/30/20

LOCK IT IN

Brands hinted this week that a Penn State-Iowa dual will be a yearly event moving forward.

Iowa is slated to visit State College next season and the two programs wouldn’t meet in the 2021-2022 season.

The two programs have tangled head-to-head in seven of the 10 seasons Sanderson has been in Happy Valley. One of those was a non-conference dual arranged by the two programs when the Big Ten left them off each other’s schedules in 2013.

“They owe us a charter and we owe them a trip out there,” Brands said.
WIN 1/29/20
The ADs have talked and (Cael) Sanderson and (Tom) Brands have talked,” the Iowa head coach said, pointing out that the coaches found a way to schedule a dual on Jan. 21, 2013, when the Big Ten did not schedule a meeting that season. “I think you are going to see them on the schedule every year. They owe us a charter and we owe them a trip out there. The last time (2013) we did this without being on the schedule, we chartered them into Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

I don’t mean to be ignorant, but am I to understand that the Iowa fans that post on here are saying Iowa and Penn State have not wrestled when not scheduled by the Big Ten for the reason that Penn State won’t pay for airfare?

Really?

You’re the one who took the heat off of Brands by saying it was Kem’s decision, not me.
And you wrongfully put it on Kem. He was ready enough to beat the guy who recently beat Swafford. What did either Kem or Brands do wrong? You feel the need to blame one of them when the correct wrestler was on the mat Friday.
