25-12, PSU

PSU has it locked up

Thought Jan Johnson wrestled tough again - Black is ranked & an NCAA Qualifier last year.

Johnson never gave in and honestly, it's complete BS that they did not call stalling on Black in the 3rd when Johnson made it to his feet like three consecutive times and Black did nothing but run him out of bounds. When Black did nothing but drive him out of bounds three consecutive times, a stall call should have been made - he was not attempting to any wrestling move and merely pushing your opponent out of bounds to stay on top should be called stalling.

Nico just getting after it and I think separated the kid's shoulder.

Love the intensity

Nico with another TD, 10-4. Working again on Edelen's left arm. Gets a tilt, gets swipes, and 2 NF, 12-4. End 1:24 in RT for Nico

3rd

Really sad for Cutch

He was looking so strong the year. That certainly could've been a season ending injury.
Damn.
Not to mention, if we get no points at 84 and HWT, it's a serious blow to our championship hopes.

Richards just too good. Can't believe Jimmy was right there with this guy last year. What happened?

Dunno for sure, but Richards was dinged up for much of last season, particularly late in the year. But he has also appeared to have stepped it up a notch this season.

I really don't think it was a ACL/MCL/PCL tear. It looked more hyperextended than anything, which could cause LCL damage but I wouldn't be shocked if it's just a sprain that keeps him out few weeks

Ernie Lucas Award Winner -- no surprise, Jason Nolf

Interview with Nolf

Stayed off social media because of all the buzz about the match

When did you know you'd get the pin?
I felt him stop wrestle, and I put some weight on my foot, and that's when I got it

What did you do in the 1st?
Wrestle the way I wrestle

Talk about the scrambles
- every time I get a TD it helps my confidence, and gives me energy

Do you feed off what Zain is doing before you?
- yeah, I feed off of whomever is in front of me

McCutch -- did that bother you?
- I didn't see it, but I was heartbroken when I heard about it

Things you need to improve on?
- turning people, and keeping them from my legs

- He likes Rec Hall move than BJC, as the fans are right on top of you

- glad his hard work has paid off

- looking forward to wrestling at Rec hall and BJC, as opposed to away matches. Likes all the PSU fans at away matches

Nolf on with Ironhead post-match, a very humble kid. Plan going in was "wrestle the way I wrestle", which is exactly what he did. Was well "aware of IMar's underhooks and got his first takedown off of it". :)

Richards looked very tough. He and Garrett will be a phenomenal final.

No, Hawks fans, I didn't forget Clark. He won't be there.

Great quotes from IMAR

Prematch: “If he (Nolf) tries to match my pace, it’s going to be an ugly, ugly match. I think he knows that because as it’s been shown in the past, if you try to match my pace, or try to match my intensity, I think that I’m better at picking people apart.”

Postmatch: Fetch me a bucket, I'm going to throw up......

IMAR should be throwing up... as he's now eating his own words. Jason Nolf came to wrestle and IMAR clearly showed he could not keep Jason's pace. Hopefully, the respect factor has gone... way up.

As pointed out is several posts here and elsewhere, Martinez showed real class on the mat after the pin and later when he stuck around and signed autographs for all of the kids who were there. I suspect that the quote you show here was his honest pre-match assessment. I think his comment was a reflection of confidence rather that trash talk. He will certainly have a different assessment before their next encounter.

Amen

Why say anything then? It's not like somebody forced him to say it. I know he has a lot of bravado, but he doesn't need to say anything especially about someone like Nolf who is known to have a huge gas tank. Just my two cents, but he set himself up for ridicule by making that statement and then going out and not backing it up. Overall he seems like a good kid and maybe this will humble him a little bit. Still don't know how he is going to drop down to 143 lbs for the trials.

I mean... Come on... "If he (Nolf) tries to match my pace, it’s going to be an ugly, ugly match. I think he knows that because as it’s been shown in the past, if you try to match my pace, or try to match my intensity, I think that I’m better at picking people apart.”

Jason was able to "set" the pace and IMAR couldn't match it. He should have kept his mouth shut and let his wrestling do the talking for him. He made a bold prediction and not only did he get out paced... he got decked looking like he simply quit. Enough said... By Jason Nolf's performance in response to IMAR's bombastic and grandiloquent statement. He never wrestled the likes of a Jason Nolf and got shown his home gym's lights. He got "Daked".... and then decked.

Who couldn't match who's pace? Jason made IMAR look like an amateur at smack talk. He might want want to practice his smack talk on some of the young kids before he takes the mat for a prime time match again. They can give him some pointers where and when he might want to reel it in a... little.

What he did afterwards was to be commended. What he did before the match was bluster he couldn't muster. He should have done what my doctor tells people to do at moments of a lack of levity... "tape your mouth shut".

OMG....sat through the entire wrestling match with wife who has really come on strong supporting PSU wrestling. She started when I took her to the VA duals a few years back when she saw the Magic Man and Ed Ruth doing their thing. At that point, she became a believer. So.....as I was mentioning above, we watched the match and I updated her about IMar and what his stats were leading up to this match. I honestly told her I wasn't sure Jason would win, but that he would make a real match of it. So, as the match progresses, both of us have moved to the front of our respective chairs and as the pin occurs, I'm shouting like a madman, and she literally has leap out of her chair screaming like a banshee. I have to admit that it wasn't till several minutes later that my heart beat returned to normal. Wow, what a match.....thank G-d I have it recorded. I'll be rewatching it over and over again. OMG.....

Some dudes better come eat some crow

Such is sports. Why they play the games, wrestle the matches and why we watch.

I had an objective opinion that an undefeated NC that's bonusing just about everyone would handle a RS freshman today. He didn't. There's been snow on the ground here for the last week. Along with that prediction I didn't hesitate grabbing boots this morning... no matter how much I would rather it be 80 degrees and sunny. Had the weather changed to 80/sunny I would've walked out and said "Wow, didn't see that coming" just as I did after that match.

FWIW, I didn't watch live because I was at another event and was informed of the result before seeing it. That, along with not bleeding blue/white probably gave me a different perspective when I did watch the match. Maybe it was Nolf but Martinez didn't seem quite right early. Then he really looked unIMar like after the Nolf escape in the 1st. IMO Martinez did most most of the pressing from neutral in the 1st, Nolf initially scored off a counter and whatever was going on with IMar was exacerbated on the Nolf escape when he landed on his head. The action looked harmless enough but it looked like IMar may have been trying to call for injury time, was kinda doing the whirly bird finger and had a lost look just before the review. I have seen refs go to concussion protocol for less this year.

Barring injury, I have Martinez winning the season series. I may be wrong, but that's ok too.

*edit* I have since read that Martinez was signing autographs after the match, so maybe he was ok and I was looking for something that wasn't there.

Imar came at JNolf like any super dominant animal would. When you rewatch the match Jason twice could have been on his own back and if not for his own cat quick reflexes maybe we are talking differently today.

Nolfs flexibility, his muscle memory, and god given abilities neutralized imars aggression and strength.

The only bet I will make relative to the rematch is imar WON'T come out w the aggression he just did. He will be more defensive and lay in wait for jason.

Must be said again..... the teams practice room is the best in the country. I don't know of another room in the country that has so many styles by so many top notch people from which to learn from. I'm not just talking coaches but the athletes and NLWC members probably make any learning situation possible.

When cael learns to coach watch out wrestling world
