PSU - Nebraska Dual Official Thread

Berge? Love the kid, But I am thinking cut may be tough or he is just timid at moment? I am having a tough time wrapping my head around his wrestling? Talent does not equal points at moment...but I have little doubt they will figure it out:)

With 1+ min of RT for Red, it's a 5-4 win for Nick Lee

7-3, PSU
Love Nick. Aggressive, active , fun to watch. The book seems to be out on him from neutral though. He tends to hang on those single legs too long and opponents with more length step over and hook the leg or guys of similar size dive in or reach and grab the opposite leg. He needs to finish quicker. He still struggles on bottom. It seems like he doesn’t have much of a plan beyond his initial move.

Nolf with a nice win. Should have had the major, but it’s hard to score points when the other guys backing up all match and won’t really engage. The ref should have forced the action there a lot more. STALLING, STALLING! The crowd had it right.

165: #1 Cenzo Joseph vs. #5 Isaiah White

They had a tough battle at Nationals last year. This should be a good match

Per 1
Joseph with an underhook. Nothing. Joseph with double overhooks, but White backed out before he got hit with an inside trip. White goes for a single, but Joseph avoids it. Halfway thru. Two smart wrestlers. Joseph with a late shot, White sprawls. Nothing. End

Berge was a little gassed at the end. So was Lee. Wonder if they have the same cold/flu that maybe is going through the team a little.

Cael mentioned they've been pushing the wrestlers extra hard in practice.

White is good, but he wasn't close to scoring on VJ. He didn't even attempt. The gap is getting bigger.
What , they are both really good but was hoping for a little more separation and more aggressive in the neutral position considering Joseph is a two time champion

Everytime there is a shot of the coaches in the corner Varner just looks like some guy that got to sit in the corner with the coaches rather than a coach. Not saying that has anything to do with his coaching abilities. Just the body language of hands in his pockets just kind of hanging out as the coaches speak with the wrestlers

I'm curious if anyone has ever looked at the apparent differences between how Penn State wrestles in matches during the day vs. how they perform at night. My sense is they perform better in the evening.

Been there myself. I found that it's better to only let one or two coaches do the shouting out of instructions. When there are too many people, the wrestler can get confused about who to listen to. If I had anything to add, I would wait until the match was finished and then talk to the wrestler.

174: #1 Hall vs. #9 Mikey Labriola

Per 1
Nothing much thru 1 min. Labriola nearly gets behind Hall, nothing. Hall drops down for a single, Labriola fends it off. OOB and a stall warning on Labriola. Hall in on a single, a scramble, and Hall gets the TD, 2-0. Hall throws the boots in. Hall nearly gets a tilt, but the buzzer sounds. RT @ 21 sec for Hall

Per 2
Blood stoppage for Labriola. Hall takes bottom. After a bit, he's out, 3-0. Labriola gets in low on the legs and gets the TD, 3-2. Hall hips out and turns for the esc, 4-2. End. RT @ 11 sec for Labriola

Per 3
Labriola takes bottom. Spiral ride by Hall. Labriola to his feet, tripped back down. OOB with 1:17 left. Labriola to his feet, tripped down but a lock hands called on Hall, 4-3. Challenge brick thrown by PSU, so we're going to video review. Call stands. Labriola to his feet, taken to the mat, to his feet again, back again to the mat. RT over 1 min for Hall. OOB with 41 sec. Stall call on Hall which the crowd does not like. Labriola tries to reach for a leg, doesn't get it. Challenge brick thrown by Nebraska. They continue to wrestle. Hall rides out. With RT, it would be a 5-3 win for Hall, but now we go to the video review. Nebraska feels there was another locked hands that was missed. Call is confirmed, no locked hands. So with 1:49 in RT, it is a 5-3 decision for Hall.

19-3, PSU
