PSU - OSU Match Thread

Someone should create a "Hot or Not" spectrum for teams in term of how hot-headed their coaches, athletes, and fans are.

Clearly, Iowa and Rutgers are among the "hotter" (hot-headed) teams. PSU (coaches and athletes at least ... not always sure about fans :) ) are "cooler". Ohio State wrestlers are generally cooler in temperament (e.g., the Jordans) ...not sure about the coach, although Ryan seems like a decent person despite the ribbing he gets. Okie State (and Smith) a bit "warmer" and so on.
Mark manning is in a category all to himself....

Beau's takedown from space looked like a praying mantis vs a spider. Lightning fast.

He is going to be a terror for 4 years. I like the freshman Beau better than the freshman Sasso for sure. I think we might like the March Beau better as well.
I don't understand the reasoning for putting him on the bottom in the 3rd. Seems more likely that he would get a takedown then an escape. There was minimal riding time advantage when the period started

Good to see Berge pull out another close match. It builds habits.
A guess here is that Berge's matches may become a little less close as he gets more of them under his belt.

I think Brady is like that poker player who waits all night for the big pot. He spends his time reading his opponent, studying tendencies, and when it’s time to go all in, he’s ready.

Others will know better than I, but some of these guys are great at figuring out foot patterns of the opponent. Maybe Brady is one of the best.

Well, on a blast-double like that, you get a feel for your opponents up-&-down motion of his upperbody. Brady certainly appeared to know that he had an opening there, but he wisely held it like a trump card - he didn't shut his offense down, he was trying other things, but rather was holding it to be a match determined. You see this in close matches - one wrestler will go with his preferred "go to" move right around the 25 second mark (in case it isn't absolutely clean and they need to finish). I've seen Borroughs do it many times.

Actually Berge executed his ankle-pick late in the Michigan match - same circumstances... close match, not a lot of scoring... and then late fires off a clean ankle-pick with a nice finish for the win. Based on his last couple matches against very good opponents, Brady has ice-water in his veins - doesn't panic and when it's go time, he finishes it.

Howard - I still liked his performance a lot. Just a young talented pup. Wait until Bigs, you will see him avenge this one.

RBY - Best match of the Year by far, he broke him in the second. That sky flip was a thing of beauty.

Nick - he is looking more like Zain every match

Beau - Super fast. Imagine him after a few more weeks at weight. Noone is going to want to wrestle this new kid at Bigs

Brady - solid and in control the whole time, but.... Managing matches to the last minute will bite you in the butt eventually. You have way more talent than that kid, go balls out. Too much time trying to shoot against Verk in the room has made you too cautious.

Joe - love his fly by the seat of his pants but he is much sloppier than Nick at this stage. He got caught but has been on the ragged edge several other times this year. They both grey shirted and have had a long time in the room. I remember wanting Nick to clean it up but Joe is much much more raw at this stage. The knee worries me, I was wondering if Mason needed to crash down to 165 for a second there. BTW where is Mason this year .... I know Greco?

Carter - another unbelievably gutsy performance. He looks small for the weight to me, a bit like Mark (more about that later). So young and so solid. I can't wait for the next ,4 years. Watching Joe's knee and sloppiness I started to wonder about Carter down at 165 next year, and Facundo at 174, possibe? Thoughts? Yep I know too soon!

Brooks - doing Aaron things. Smooth as silk.

Beard - was it me or was he pissed? A man on a mission. He avenged in spades. I think had he not pinned him, he just might have worked towards a tech, that was a statement match. Warner - I am coming. As always, trust in Cael.

Seth - he should have dominated Nate. I am sorry but I hate late 3rd period decisions vs weaker competition. Orn is no slouch but come on Seth go out and kick some ass. His earlier matches against unranked guys showed his power, speed, athleticism.

overall great match including the loses. You can just see the consistent improvement all season.... and we are such a young team. Tom had the look of 'ah crap 4 more years more of most of these kids, been there done that'. Covid has made tickets to Aruba super cheap.

I can do without TR's social media antics obviously (especially when it's directly at us half the time lol) but it's clear the class his wrestlers demonstrate start up top. I'll always respect him for that.
I give Ryan credit for being a successful self righteous salesman particularly in recruiting but none for his coaching ability or in the developing of the talented kids he brings in.

98, thank you for the homerun.

I was pretty close to punching the wall and remembered all the drywall contractors were all tied up.

You're welcome. I watched on DirecTV and the Byers' call was in sync the whole dual. Also, it keeps playing when one wants to engage The Wrestling Room.

I think Cael made the call here. Sasso is one of the best riders there is, and it was better Beau experience it now for the first time vs Big tens. I don't think Cael cared much about the match outcome, but more about what Beau will learn and be able to take back to the room and work on. I think it was the right call.

think long range, not short term. Beau, like most guys early in their college wrestling career, needs work on the bottom. Sasso is a tough rider, so this was a crash course in what to expect when on bottom.

Give Beau some credit for getting out, even if it was very late in the period. He didn't give up, and eventually got the escape.

While PSU coaches never undersell or under estimate their guys, I doubt in their mind they expected Beau to defeat Sasso. This was a learning experience, not a matchup where PSU knew they needed to win to have a chance to win the dual.

It's also important for evaluating who goes at the weight. Bartlett is an undersized true freshman. I think Cael probably wants to see how he looks on bottom before committing to him.

Today was not the goal.

Exactly, they wanted him to learn some things about Sasso's tendencies in all positions. Sasso was stalling imho to keep him down, but Bartlett continuing to work to the last and eventually getting out was huge. The gap was not nearly as big as I thought it would be and with the film and information gained from that match... their next match at B1Gs or NCAAs, if there is one, could be a classic.

I don't understand why you think Seth should dominate him. If anything it was a slight upset for him to get the win.

Maryland should mostly be a romp, so it's looking like a few seeds for Big Tens are becoming more clear. Here are some guesses (without looking into it too far; and depending on what happens elsewhere):

Howard - low seed
RBY #2 (probably behind Micic, who hasn't yet wrestled) - not clear how they will handle this
Lee #2 or #3 (depending on how they seed Eierman and Rivera)
149 - mid to low seed (not knowing who goes here)

Berge #4 or #5
Joe Lee #5 or #6 (?)
Starocci #3
Brooks #1
Beard #4 or #5
Nevills #7

I think Beard figured out how to avoid the 3rd period gas tank issues, end the match early!;)
I have not seen Beard have any gas tank issues during the regular season. He wrestled Amine extremely hard for 7 minutes and I didn't see any fatigue. He has looked really good this year, as was expected of him when he was recruited.

Not sure why Micic would be number one seed, i he hasn't wrestled yet.

Don't be surprised if DeSanto gets seeded ahead of RBY.

No H2H, limited matches -- and DeSanto has bonused every match, 4 TFs + 1 MD. Neither has faced any top wrestlers, so that's not a differentiator.

RBY is better, but that isn't always reflected in seeds.

I don't want to come across as too disparaging vs Seth but...

Seth is 4-1 with two very close ones against weaker guys. Orndorf is now 4-6, he is marginally athletic at best, not aggressive, pear shaped... training against Singletary in their room.

Seth is a former #1 in the nation at his weight recruit, 4x state champ training with Snyder, Cassar, Cael and Kerk. He has been in the room for 3 years. For crying out loud, hell yes, he should rip guys like Orndorf a new one.

I think it is a fair observation. Do I think he can/should hold his own vs Gable, Paris or Cassi? No way. He did pretty well against Paris all things considered, and showed some aggression.

Not sure I totally agree regarding RH... wish I could say I did, but honestly, Heinselman looked utterly dominant in those scrambles - on the last one, he was virtually inviting him to shoot. Just my opinion, but Robbie did not look like he could finish on Heinselman and he's not even a likely top-half AA.

A couple quick thoughts.

1. Nevill's knee. I was anxious to see how he looked after getting banged up last week. I can't help but worry that we're one bad knee tweak away from heavyweight homelessness. So I was very encouraged by Nick's performance.

2. CStar. I suspect that all his matches against top tier guys will go much like these last two. Knowing how dangerous he is likely changes how his competition wrestles and leads to more of a chess match than a shootout.
