Southern Scuffle Semis/Finals Thread

Cement mixer by Hall for the fall.

Meanwhile that Flo announcer (Bader?) is CLUELESS. So busy talking he often has no clue what is going on with the match. He never noticed that Priesch got a TD and then wondered why the ref stopped the match when he warned Priesch for stalling because of a 5 count.

that was fretwell, not bader.

I would just like to say that Preisch is damn good. He should AA. In saying that, what a great match for Hall. Never wavered in confidence of himself.

Think that's Cliff Fretwell.

A 5 count which was bizarre itself. The count started like seconds and by 4 was like 2-3 seconds between counts. Totally weird.

crutchmer v hall will have more scoring. Preisch a.o.k with low score tactical match. Crutchmer will be entertaining which I think helps hall expose scoring opprotunities

Yes, he certainly likes the sounds of his own voice.

YES HALL WITH THE PIN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!CEMENT MIXER....GUY KEEPS HIS POISE....HE IS UNREAL....

My god. Since Cael has been at PSU the amount of talent he has had has been unreal, and to think that Mark Hall might be the best he's had is just insane. Truly insane.

I didn't see it. That being said, did Hall take neutral when given the opportunity? How did he fare from bottom?

I think people are making too much of Hall being tilted by Brucki. I think it was an anomaly and I think Mark will be fine going underneath of anyone.

Please tell me Mark is still wearing that borrowed singlet?

I remember going to PJW states in 1994 for the first time when it was at Rec Hall. I wrestled for Area III and I forgot entire my wresting bag at the hotel 45 minutes away. I had to borrow a singlet, shoes, and a headgear from anyone who let me use them and won both matches that night!

turn on the hwy match....schaeffer just got chucked and nearly pinned. the kid from Duke is entertaining

Ok, looks like Ok State has 8 in the finals. If Penn State had been there, I'm pretty sure some of those guys would have lost depending on the way the brackets were set up.

If Penn State had been there and not Ok State, could we have put 8 in the finals? My guess is that we could have put 6 guys there not counting Mark Hall since his points wouldn't count.

That doesn't mean that Ok State is the better team because some of our guys are clearly superior. It definitely would be a competitive contest though.

Hall is a stud. Again, looked undersized and came too close (based on no takedowns in the first 5 minutes) to not winning. Looks like he chose to sit back on the shot and go into the scramble and it didn't payoff. Good experience against a strong opponent. Would have liked to see him figure out that D and score off of his feet in the first 2 periods.

I see more of that in boxing. Guy needs a knockout, sets it up, and just executes. Seems harder to do in wrestling for whatever reason. Preisch is really strong. That was sick.

I haven't watched the Hall match yet. I will in about a half hour.

It sounds very impressive that Hall kept his composure with time expiring and hit a devestating move to end it. Wow.

However, Hall is supposed to be elite on his feet. World class freestyle skills. Any concern for zero takedowns in 6:30 of wrestling ?

That's why I vote to keep the redshirt on him. He's still learning. This year lets him learn and make these slight adjustments for his next 4 years.

No concerns at all. He looked very good on his feet in other matches. His hips were stupid heavy in this match and he was dealing with Ryan's solid D. Priesch should at least get some credit instead.

He's got plenty to learn but concerned? Not even slightly

Not from me, Preisch defended really well and made it very difficult to get to his legs. Hall kept his cool and when it mattered, he got the TD and the pin. I was impressed with both guys.

Agreed, and just think how much fun losing Nationals by 3 points will be!

OSU has 7 in the finals( not in 285, 125, 197) and if we were there I could see us taking their place at 184 based on how I would have seeded it.

Sure. And they can lose without Hall, too. OSU just put 10 in the semis and 7 in the finals at the Scuffle. I'm not ready to give up on Rasheed, but I still worry about his cut.

They can lose with Hall too, so what's the point?

Maybe less concerned with zero takedowns in 6:30 than with the number of TD attempts. Preisch dictated pace throughout.

All credit to a really solid Preisch, who looks like an AA this year, but the guys Hall will soon be compared to--Taylor, Ruth, Nolf, Nickal--wouldn't be trailing a guy of Preisch's caliber with a minute remaining. Can't expect to dine out on cement mixers late against AAs all year long, as exciting as that is. I suspect that has more to do with the conditioning expectations of starters vs redshirts, which could change in a hurry.

Oops! Bad math on my part. (and I'm an engineer) I agree with your assessment. And three of those final matchups would be PSU vs OSU and all three could be won by PSU. There would also be Hall vs Crutchmer. Hall's points wouldn't count, but he could still keep Crutchmer from getting the 1st place additional points.

Bottom line is that I think we could have beaten them. It would have been a great contest, but I think we could have done just a little better than OSU.

And Collica would have met Mayes in the Semis. So they likely have 5 finalists and we definitely have ZR, JN and BN. Likely Suriano based on what I've seen, probably NN and Cenzo as a possibility. I can't count out Cutch but not sure yet where to put him either as far as a finalist contender goes.

So....without Hall and scoring either Rasheed or Morelli....we are just as much in the driver seat.

And then also add the bonus point differential.

it was one match. and mark won. good wrestlers remember weakness. if they rematch i expect its not close. ryan wrestled great and wanted a close defensive match. mark probably could have pushed the pace but waited for his chance and nailed it
