Spencer Lee Promises Iowa Will Be 2020 National Champions!

Man you are a Moran!
Is this a running gag on HR? I've seen it enough times, is it like Carl/Cael and you really hate Wisconsin's 141 lber? ;)

FWIW, I meant no underhanded shade in saying Spencer is the best thing Iowa has going--was merely appreciating the passion on display. He might be the best college wrestler this year. If I had to bet though, I'd wager Zahid wins the Hodge. Spencer will be my 2nd most supported 57kg competing at OTT too. Not everything is an insult man.

Nope. There is no way I think Lee has ever taken anything, nor do I want him injured. Can’t say it more forcefully than that.

now if only your wacky crew would give Zain and Nolf the same respect.
Cassar. Post you'll see- No way a guy cutting to make 197 could eat and lift to be a strong heavy the next year.Has to be roids,cheating,slush,cover-ups.....
Post you don't see-Jesus Christ man. Your making yourself look bad in this thread

Keep an eye on Gross in that discussion, too. I suspect Lee will have a higher TF & Fall rate compared to Zahid, but we'll see. I haven't looked at ASU's schedule, but if the travel is anything like last year, it would be an added challenge for Z.

If Cenzo can up his pinning/bonus rate like he did from his sophomore to junior years, I think he will have to get serious consideration for the Hodge also. Running the meat-grinder of 165 to the finals three straight years and hanging two of three career losses on Imar there gotta count for something.

Wasn't there talk (or at least speculation) that Spencer would be wrestling a 2016 Snyder-esque season - minimizing the number of collegiate matches to get him ready/qualified for the OTT?

What is a Moran ?? ;)

Gross needs Zahid and Cenzo to both lose this year.

We all know lifetime achievement is low in the official Hodge criteria, and we also know voters will vote that way anyway.

I don't put anything past the voters, for sure. But if Gross is undefeated and has better bonus numbers, he'll be in the discussion.

What will be interesting to watch is how long Stencel stays at or near the top of the most dominant rankings. Not the same as the Hodge race, of course, but media will use it as a proxy. I haven't checked out CMU's schedule, so I'm not sure when we might expect him to take his first loss.

Uh oh Nerf - you only said “might” be the best wrestler. Prepare for a Fatwa issued against you by the Mullahs in Iowa City

Stencel could lose on opening weekend -- the MSU Open includes Michigan (Parris), Ohio State (Singletary amd/or Kerkvliet?), Pitt (Thomas). All 3 beat him last year (though he did beat 2 of them in March).

Also Illinois (Rachal).

Well, is a guarantee a promise? In legal terms a Parent Guaranty works like a Promissory Note, so if we’re going to be legalistic here, yes, he constructively promised a title.

we’ll see.

He didn’t say “guarantee” either. Just “we’re gonna”

He certainly could've had fun and fired up the crowd without using those same words, predicting a victory. Poor choice of words on his part, in my opinion.

Spencer Lee is a great young man. Period Speaking to an entire stadium....he was excited and spoke to fire up the crowd. Everything he said was exactly what you would expect an athlete to say about his school and team. Absolutely nothing negative in what he did or said. Wish the "adults" on this board would follow his example.

I'm pretty sure most on here feel the same way you do. Were just having fun with it... "Cause That's What We Do"!

Seriously, what was he supposed to say? I promise that we finish in the top 3 this year.. Just a 20 year old kid being enthusiastic about his team. I'm a huge PSU fan (figuratively) and really have to just shake my head at the pettiness on this board. Everyone is so glad that our team stresses 'fun', yet someone else has some fun and you try to turn it in to something it's not. Bottom line, I would love to have Spencer on our team and I'm sure none of you would complain if he wrestled for PSU and did this at Beaver Stadium.

lol. Fake outrage and misguided hyperbole. Anyone who has frequented this board for more than 1 day knows the overwhelming majority of posters here are huge Spencer Lee fans. Love to see his enthusiasm in front of the home crowd in this clip. Iowa looks to be very strong this year. Should make for an intense season and help grow the sport.

Don't buy in this idiot does it all the time on hr Iowa is the best they will go 10-0 in the dual and they will score 150 points. The sad part he's the only one that doesn't realize he's an idiot

Well if he trends like any other Iowa wrestling he will be straight up stalling by the time he's a senior lol. Mat monkey 101

No overreaction on my part at all. Since when does 'shake my head' mean outrage? And how is it misguided hyperbole? Big deal, I said everyone likes that we have 'fun', doubt that that is far from the truth. You want to play word games, have fun with that. My point was that the original poster is making something out of nothing. Maybe I should check with you in the future before I post...

Spencer Lee is the best thing anybody has got going but that was a nice half ass complement. And yes we agree the best Sport is Wrestling.
You're looking at it through a Hawkeye fans eyes. Give me a choice of 4 years of Aaron Brooks or Spencer and his remaining 2 years, I'd probably take Brooks. Beard and his 4 years? Probably Beard. Starocci and his 4 years? Hmm...don't know. Hell, PSU has a couple hs recruits I may not be willing to give up for Spencers remaining 2 years. For one, I don't think not having him will cost us a team championship for one if not both of his remaining two seasons. And two, we don't see Spencer as a must have as a member of our future coaching staff like you Iowa fans do.

Shit, I can not wait to read your forums after Spencer graduates. You guys are going to be begging for Tom to hand over the 3 inch binder to Spencer if things shake out the way I think they will for our two teams.

Gonna be FUN....:)

Yeah, but what if after winning 4 NCAA titles in Iowa City, Spencer, like Kyle decides to run back to State College to learn wrestling at a higher level prior to ascending to Gable's job?

I certainly know that "most" posters are big Spencer fans as well as PSU fans. However.....my post was for those who are clearly not fans of anything not PSU. Not sure why some have the opinion that if they don't come to PSU....they are the enemy that must be destroyed (verbally)…...but we do have those here. To the rest of you jokers.....Love your humor :) #eatitTurkandtherestofyouidiots

When you say Spencer is the best thing going for everyone, does "everyone" include Yianni's program?
I will answer you and let the others figure it out.
Life time impact on wrestling all levels over what will be their whole careers, their school and community IMHO I will take SL over anyone.
If you could pick one guy that is currently competing but has not reached the top of their game yet (JB KS), also to include their possible impact throughout the rest of their careers (Smith,Cael,Brands) who would it be? I would put Yanni up there plus post grad it would be Dake, DT and I hope Nolf. Who is my favorite PSU wrestler past or current.

Yanni is certainly a bigger name among the kids and he seems to be a more charismatic young man. Spencer lives a very private life and seems pretty introverted. He gives a small interview here and there but hardly even talks about any of the things people actually wonder. What was wrong with him last year? We know what was wrong with Yanni his freshman year because he told the world. It is much harder to have an impact when you live your private life away from the spotlight. It is 100% Spencer's right, but it will probably cost him the popularity of a Yanni down the road.

As far as impact on the school it is very hard to figure. Winning 4 team titles and your team also having the number 1 recruiting class each of your 4 years would seem a good measure. Having other guys on your team win individual titles would be another indication you were creating an impact bigger than just your own wrestling. I think Spencer will continue to have a big impact on Iowa City and the Hawkeye faithful, but unless he gets to winning some serious senior world and olympic golds it will probably go no further.

OK guys, he’s a generational talent, spell his name with me:

Y - i - a - n - n - i

Yep, there is no I in team, but the greek John has two eyes, and is spelled with two I’s!

Fair points and I dont fully disagree, I personally feel we have only seen the tip of the iceberg with Spencer. Yanni could be #1 on that list their body of work has not yet been seen lots of things could change. All great things for Wrestling I will take SL. Here is another question who has a larger overall impact lifetime on the Fingerlakes region wrestling and Cornell Dake or Yanni? I say Dake
