Spencer Lee Promises Iowa Will Be 2020 National Champions!

I rarely post on here being a Hawkeye fan and all but I have to call this out as I have seen this guy be just as big a homer as some of the guys on HR. This might be one of the dumbest posts someone could write. Read it again and tell me I'm wrong.

Well you're not wrong. I don't know what anyone would expect Spencer to say. Of course he believes Iowa will be national champs. He should believe that because if he doesn't I'd think something was wrong. He was in front of a sold out crowd at Kinnick which was a perfect time to get everybody hyped by saying it, too.

170 at NCAA's is not the goal. Even some here predicted PSU to be close last year, which I guess was possible if the stars aligned...though frankly it wasn't important.

The landscape is different than 1997, and I may not see 170 or more in my lifetime. Fine with me, as the odds are great that I'll see more National Championships.
Bingo. NCAA doesn't give out a 2nd trophy for margin of victory or for hitting 170 points.

It's fun banter for the boards, and a D measuring contest for some, but ultimately irrelevant.

Look, I'm not gonna destroy the kid for this, but to brush it off like it's no big deal is not right either. Highly visible, public athletes at big time programs are instructed not to make comments like this that can quickly become pin-up, motivational material for opponents. Of course, Cael and the Boys don't NEED any more motivation, as they've shown already repeatedly, but it's best not just to offer it up freely.

I'm brushing it off as no big deal … not even close. You're entitled to your opinion, I disagree.

So, are you upset (or annoyed or whatever word best describes your feelings here) on behalf of Penn State wrestlers?

I think an Iowa wrestler telling a stadium full of Iowa fans than Iowa is going to win a championship is pretty close to the definition of "no big deal".

Not upset on behalf of PSU guys in the least. Point is simply that the kid made a mistake in making those comments. Is he a villain or a bad kid? No, I think we're all capable of more nuance than that. He's a good kid who made a dumb mistake. That's all.

It's no big deal

I am not 100% sure about the humble part when we have Bo, at a football game, saying “It’s what we do!” IMHO Spencer is doing a pretty similar thing.

just to be clear I have no issue with Bo or what he said.
It's not bragging if you back it up. Bo more than backed it up.

I really don't see it as a dumb mistake NitChris. The kid was simply trying to pump up a packed football stadium. I certainly don't see his comment changing how any team prepares or wrestles at NCAA'S. Hell, if Cenzo had said it, it would be posted in dunke's social media thread, and we'd probably see a "like" from ya. Haha. I'd pick a different hill to die on.

This is a bad take. SMH

Iowa guys: any idea when single match tickets go on sale to the public? Looking to make the drive out from Chicago for the PSU dual. No, I'm not an obnoxious PSU fan. Just love good wrestling, and wanna see this match in person. Thanks!
You can tell that the Iowa faithful can sniff a NC this year when we're asking them for ticket info on this board. Lol.
Not talking about you #eatitturk, you're always chiming in to defend your Hawks.

So you are saying you are not quite as dumb as the lowest of the low on HR. Congrats!

Mildly humorous. I get that the kid is a good kid and he's a PA kid too, but it's ok to say he got caught up in the moment and made a comment that was ill-advised. It's not a crime.

Bo Nickal got destroyed on HR when, after he had just won the National Championship for his team, was all excited and made the "that's what we do!" statement. And he had ACTUALLY WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP.
SMH.
If Gilman or (insert other Hawkeye wrestlers name here) said the exact same thing Bo said you would have nailed him to the cross. I never destroyed Bo that I am aware of, I drink a lot so it's possible, but it did come off somewhat shall I say arrogant. Heat of the moment after a huge win so he gets a pass as any wrestler should.

Know when to cut losses, don't double down on stupidity!

I'll bite... what would you have scripted for him to say?

"I only have three things, Hawkeye Fans:

One, this is for the kids!

Two, buy your tickets now, we're gonna be 2020 national champions!

Three, be forewarned that I may have just made an incorrect prediction, and if that is the case, and it ultimately turns out that I did make a mistake in that prediction, please forgive me. I wish you a full and speedy recovery from the abuse you've taken from my lapse in judgment, and from the injury you've incurred while laughing your ass off. I hope they are able to reattach it.

Go Lions!"

Pep Rallies are Dumb.....they are a Mistake.....They are Ill-advised......only serving as pin-up motivational bulletin board material for opponents.....players and coaches should never tell their fans they are going to win...….said NO RATIONAL sports fan EVER...…….

We can put this thread to rest when on Jan. 31st, Brody Teske celebrates after pinning Spencer Lee in Carver Hawkeye Arena walking off the mat flexing and yelling... MY STATE, MY HOUSE, MY STATE, MY HOUSE, BOOM!

bunch of old guys worried about what a natl champ wrestler said at a football game? Can't believe it. Too bad we don't pay more attention to the politicians lying to us everyday!
Spencer could have said almost anything and it would be ok - why does anyone really care? Let's figure out who is going to redshirt and wrestle this year..... The year of the football stadium (for NCAAs)

First off if that is the best post you can make stop posting because its not a good look for you. And what if Zain keeps betting Yianni then what would you say.
Ahhhhhhh that main is a generational talent. Which by the way is not defined by four NCAA titles. I still think Spencer has an uphill battle to get four. Kids are just getting better and we know he can be beat. Not saying he will be beat but there is more to it tan that. I've watched pa wrestling for thirty five years and still haven't seen Kolats talent that he had in high school

Sounds like the beginning of a wonderful relationship, did you marry her?

You are pretty much the only person who thinks the comment was “ill advised”, so it is cute that you are now making sure yourself knows it is “ok”. That said, I ask again- what would you have scripted for him?

Of course it was ill advised. Do you think his coach wanted him to make a public prediction of winning the title? I don't think so. What could he have said? Something as simple as come out and see us this year, we're gonna have a great team!
See how easy that was?

You are like my 1 year old son. Just won't give up on something so silly to fight for. Relax and have a cookie!

Brands trusts Spencer to mentor DeSanto, but is bothered at all about what he said at the football game?

Besides, it's Iowa. Since when did Iowa start fearing motivated opponents?

If that comment actually motivated any opponents -- much more likely they just laugh it off or forget it. This isn't the 1980s when they genuinely hated each other. With rare exceptions they're all friends off the mat.

1. A One year old will give up sooner
2. I think a couple (dozen) "Magic" Brownies might be a better choice.
3. "Never Gonna Stop....Never Gonna Give Up" Rick Astley ...sort of :)

So, if I have this straight, Penn State is going to try to win the team championship this year. Now that Spencer said that in front of the home crowd PSU is going to put it on the bulletin board and REALLY try to win the National Team Title.

Yep, when I say it out loud I can truly hear how egregious his error is. Tom and Terry with both probably have to give the young man a talking to.

#EatitTurk...It's what one does on this board correct ??

Option B: "Um, hey guys. I'm Spencer Lee. I'm a wrestler. And, uh, we're like going to try really hard to win this year. OK? Thank's a bunch."

I'd say anyone predicting 170 is delusional (or at least has unrealistic expectations).

But, the people predicting it for the team that has scored at least 120 for the past 4 years are slightly less delusional than the people predicting it for the team that hasn't scored 100 in 8 years.
Just think, if they could have mustered 103 in that one year Cael gave then a chance they wouldn't be 0 for a decade.
