As with most incoming freshman, my biggest concern is their ability to get out from bottom. With these coaches he probably will not get out from bottom much during practice. Hopefully that translates into quick outs in matches.
I’ll be shocked if he wins it easily. I picked him to win but this is one of the toughest tournaments in the world. Last year a kid that didn’t win U20’s won a senior world title about a month later. I think he does it but I think he will have a few close matches. I can see him winning 4 if he takes a redshirt. Otherwise is he beating Kasak, Mesenbrink, or Levi as a true freshman? Let alone Sealey and Facundo.
I caught Attao getting pushed around the mat. Cortez put on a hell of a comeback by constantly looking to score. Otto Black had won a great bout. Then, I fell back asleep. Prior to me tuning in, Rogotzke got rocked in round one.

2 in the semis would be a great result. I like Otto Black. Not sure he does much NCAA wise for Iowa but the kid is damn good at greco
I just looked at results. Black and Cortez in semis and the other 3 are still alive at this point. Need their guys to win in the semis to pull them into the repechage

crop you would know better but this recent success at u17s and u20s is pretty unprecedented for US greco correct? Is there a realistic timeline of a senior world champ from the US?
No realistic timeline. They’ve changed Head coaches twice in the last quad.
They need more consistency and talent and depth. You HOPE this u20s performance is a good sign, but there’s just no way to know until it hits.
All that to say, it’s not likely. Senior world champs at Greco is a long ways away. Look at a Bey, junior world champ - hasn’t even sniffed a medal at the senior level.
This is definitely a good start though, and we’ll get better if the format/rules stay the same for another quad or two. We don’t do well with rule changes. Not enough depth to truly change tactics in one quad.
As much as I love to throw shade at Iowa, this is not throwing shade at Iowa. But no reason to get excited about Black's potential as a SR Greco wrestler because he's going to Iowa for college. I'd say the same thing if he was going to PSU.
Unless Iowa is going to go all in on Greco - and I don't think having an ex-HS coach "helping out" in the room is going all-in - it's kind of pointless for a guy dead set on competing in Greco spend his 4 years at a D1 wrestling school in terms of development.

Yes. If you are serious about GR and want to go to college, Northern Michigan is the choice.
If USA Wrestling were serious about Greco, we'd have at least one more school as a training center. Nothing against Northern Michigan, but they do not get to compete. Last year's entire schedule was a tourney in Norway, the Olympic Trials Qualifier, and Olympic Trials.
Unfortunately, Marquette MI is remote, and especially in the winter. The only possible candidate school within 3 hrs in good weather is Michigan Tech. And when during wrestling season does the UP have good weather?
Black choosing Iowa is bizarre to put it mildly, barring some academics reason. He skipped his JR year of HS to concentrate on Greco. His goal is Olympic Greco. He's from Colorado, so he's paying non-resident tuition. And his older brother Max wrestles at NMU. Yet he still chose to be a career backup at Iowa. (We all know Slumlord Bob is not letting a non-Big Board Greco specialist start, ever.) Just doesn't make sense from an athletic career development standpoint.
Unless they bring his current coach, Joe Warren with him to Iowa. That could be good. Also the girls assistant, Mayabb is a solid greco mind.
Regardless, unless Cortez, Black, Raney, Joel Adams go all in, year round greco they will Struggle in the senior level. However you take that crew and atteo, get them to go all in on greco. We are in the hunt some day. Just don’t see any of them giving up ncaa to do it, other than Black
I think Greco has a shot at becoming the new Iowa style. When you think about it they are half way there already.
I’ll echo what I’ve read… until we have larger contingencies choose to make Greco their full-time path, we will lose to foreigners that do at the senior level. I think a lot of our age-group success has more to do with our athletes just behaving more reps in competition. It levels off greatly at the highest level, obviously.
Warren and Betterman seem to be doing great stuff in CO. I feel like I see Mayabb do something new every 2 years. I don’t wanna understate my respect for him. Dude is a treasure. But I could’ve swore I saw he was coaching HS or something since the iowa girls gig. He would be a great resource, if the college let him focus on Greco.
Shouts out to Illinois and Medlin for having that path and pushing Greco. Until the folk cash cow gets some buy-in, we’re likely to be an also ran for awhile.

Also, can’t say enough good things about NMU, Bisek, and Betts. Things didn’t go the way one of my former athletes would’ve wanted them too… However, he had great support from the program. He loved training Greco every day. He got a piece of paper and a certification. I don’t think he’d change a single thing, besides the injuries.

Lots of top end talent but not much depth. This weight also has hands down the biggest favorite at any weight in Amirreza Masoumi. He is a U17, 2X U20, and U23 champ who has demolished every American he has faced. He’s ranked #4 on the senior level only behind Geno, Zare, and Akgul. I think he walks to his 3rd straight U20 title.
Although Masoumi is a massive favorite there are quite a few other really talented guys who should be looking to capture silver or bronze. This group includes Davudgadzhiev, Buyukcingil, Dursunov, and Kueter. Dursunov and Buyukcingil have great results at the age group level with Dursunov winning U17 gold and Buyukcingil winning a bronze at U20’s last year. Davudgadzhiev only has the single result but it was gold and he beat Buyukcingil in the finals 5-0. One last guy is Jaspooran Singh. He is still U17 eligible where he took 5th last month and has also placed 3rd.
Kueter is an exceptional athlete and wrestler who is probably going to get a lot better as he focuses full time on wrestling. He had a solid trials where he beat Attao 8-7 and Sahakian 11-2 before beating Jim Mullen 2 straight in the finals 5-4 and 5-3. I expect him to do well but he is undersized and will likely have issues against the bigger heavy’s like Masoumi. He’s going to need to focus on his quickness and superior athleticism to go deep in the tournament. I’m picking him to be just out of the medals but I won’t be surprised to see him on the podium either.

If Kueter, Barr or Rademacher can get on the podium and 1 or 2 of the bronze or silvers can turn into gold this will likely go down as the best ever

Podium seems realistic, but finals is really tall task this year. Returning: Kerk, Hendrickson, Bastida, Feldman, Schultz among others. He'd have to beat two of them in the quarters and semis.
Kueter won two close matches against Mullen at Trials (5-3 and 5-4). Mullen is probably not the best HWT at VT, and around the 4th or 5th best HWT in the ACC. So there's a lot of work for Kueter to be an NCAA Finalist this March.

Adams got kinda hosed, there. Gets his chance on top on the 2nd… down 5-1. Gets a lift and goes polish finish on it. Scored 4 to take lead on criteria. Dude finds OOB and then they challenge, erasing his score for offensive legs, I assume. Damn.
Both Black and Cortez take silver while Attao won 3 matches today to take bronze. Not too shabby

Not a great start for the ladies today. Jasmine Robinson did make the finals but the other 4 lost. Diduch won her first match and lost her second. Larramendy, Qureshi, and Gonzalez all lost their first match. All 4 are still alive at the moment though with their opponents all making the semis.
Jasmine Robinson is really really good by the way. What sucks is that she is already competing at 72kg and looks like she has the frame to end up at 76kg which is the deepest weight we have by far. Blades is so young and then there is, Gray, Makoyed, Guilford, Bell, and Welker. Super deep. At least a few of those ladies are world medal threats but can’t make the team.

Duke, assuming he keeps winning, would hit Baitukaev in the semis and Karampour in the finals.

Lilledahl’s draw looks pretty damn good. Pavlov is on the opposite side and he won’t see Valizadeh until the semis. He most likely will have Ankush in the quarterfinals. Ankush lost to Blaze in the U17 finals last year
Basset opposite side of Toprak and Khorramdel who would hit in the rd of 16
Lockett has Eshinimaev rd of 16, Itaev in semis, Yaprak and Rezaei are on the other side
