U23s Thread

Oh, hey flo! Welcome to the party!

I wasn't expecting them to be beating the Trackwrestling Drum or anything, but it seemed at least some of the twitter accounts should be somewhat active.

Agreed! Track also had exclusive rights to the senior worlds, but Flo had a full team in Nur Sultan and posted a bunch of videos and articles before, during and afterwards. I think the bigger issue with the general lack of U23 coverage might be (a) the event is only three years old and doesn't matter as much even as cadet and junior worlds*, and (b) the high school and college seasons are here, so most of their fairly limited staff is pre-occupied

(*By the way, "U23s are not all that important" is not a claim Flo was making during the U23 world team trials, which were carried by Flo)

they should hire a beat writer!

Nerf you the man, thank you. Thank you to everyone else for the PBP, too.

I agree with many that FLO should be promoting it (at least the FRL guys should tweet out comments)... no articles or updates... so much for growing the sport, eh?

Let's go Bo & Berge!

Turns out Budapest is 5 hours ahead of us in Eastern Time (not the 6 that USAWrestling listed). That means Berge’s repechage round starts at 5:30 EDT, and Finals start at 1pm.
It's only 5 this week, as we turn the clock back this weekend, and it will again be 6

Berge up shortly on Mat B vs. Gaurav Sharma (IND)
  • Berge more active to begin but he's hit with the first warning.
  • And is now on the clock.
  • Berge steps out with :04 on shot clock, so 0-1
  • BREAK
  • Berge steps out again, trying to go behind. 0-2.
  • Berge gets a leg but can't hold on.
  • Berge shoots, Gaurav goes behind. 0-4. Tilts Berge 0-6.
  • Berge out cold, flat on his back. Red challenge brick thrown, medical staff in.
  • INJ default, Gaurav's hand is raised
  • Berge out of frame but even more med staff is there, with something that looks like a stretcher. Deeply concerning. Camera now focuses on scoreboard so can't even see activity near Berge.

Berge took a good low shot and then seemed to just go limp. Gourav went right behind and locked a trap arm before the ref noticed Berge was completely out. Very scary seeing him out cold.

The camera refocuses and Berge is no longer on the mat, though it's not clear whether he got up on his own power or was stretchered away.

I'm not sure it's clear at what point Berge was out, but Gourav made multiple attempts to tilt and wasn't able to score on each of them, so I think Berge was at least hanging in there, until he suddenly wasn't and went flat on his back. The UWW will have video at some point.

It's disturbing that there have been no updates. I asked the USA Wrestling Twitter account for an update, will post back anything I hear.

It was also disturbing how the camera went away from Berge as soon as medical trainers came over; I don't know whether that was UWW policy, perhaps out of respect for medical privacy, or whether the person working that camera decided on their own, but it struck me as probably due to the former, and probably having more to do with following a maxim that injuries make the sport look bad so don't publicize them, as opposed to medical privacy concerns. Maybe Mike C can ask Foley what's up with that.

UWW events camera always goes away when serious injury occurs. Was in on a single and took a knee to his head.Hope he's ok

Terrible for this to happen, then to be in a foreign country makes it all the worse.Sure hope his family made the trip and are with him.

Let's hope it's limited to a Ben Askren like knee to the noggin and a concussion with a very rapid recovery. All other scenarios dancing in my head seen to be so much worse.

I am so excited to see Brady make his jump this year. With an extra year under his belt and 8 lbs added to his guns.

No question he is critically important to the team race. For today however my interest is focused on his health alone. I am sure he could use the prayers of the full BWI collective right now.

No news on Berge remains deeply troubling--sometimes I wish our coaches would open up just tiny bitty bit, though I'm sure they are focused on what Brady needs.

But--Bo has a big match (as far as wrestling competition goes in the scheme of life) coming up here pretty soon. Forgot about the qualification import--and chuckled at the takedown too. That you @crablegs1 ?

With HIPPA and other considerations I doubt we will hear anything official from PSU. It will probably have to come from Flo or Track or Intermat as from there POV this is a news story and at least one will have someone local following up. It might take days as opposed to hours ...

Regardless of how long, I just hope that he's ok. Head injuries are always serious.
