US Open

Retherford, Nolf, Nickal, Cassar, Hall, Cenzo, Nick Lee, Nick Nevills, & RBY are all already qualified for World Team Trials. I wonder if they'll sit out the Open.
For the senior level guys if there is someone already sitting in Final X you can wait until team trials, but for 65kg, 70kg and possibly 79kg it would be a good idea to try and win and get that bye to Final X.

And a reminder that D Taylor is wrestling 86kg at the Pan Am Championships, April 18-21.

I believe the following to be true: If you win the US Open you get a bye to the Finals of the World Team Trials. Then you Qualify for the Final X. World Medalists already sit in the Final X

If you win the Open and there isnt a World medalist sitting in Final X, then and only then do you get to sit in Final X

No one gets a bye to the finals of the WTT challenge tourney

Is it different this year than last? If so, do you have an article to show that?

Last year, there was a bye to the WTT finals if there was a returning world medalist already sitting in the Final X.

This is how it worked last year. I can't find the picture Flo put out that showed how it worked but it was pretty helpful.

1. If there was a returning medalist, then they were in the Final X. US Open winner goes to WTT finals. WTT Challenge winner goes to WTT finals. WTT winner goes to Final X.

2. No returning medalist. US Open winner vs WTT winner in the Elite X

In both scenarios, winning the US Open got you a bye to somewhere.

One thing, you call it "a bye to the finals of the WTT challenge tourney". But there is a difference between the WTT challenge tourney and the WTT best of 3 finals.

So, if I understood it correctly, Flo’s 2019 explanation is still the same as y2jriden’s much shorter explanation.

I wonder if Taylor or anyone else sitting in Final X can choose to wrestle the Open, win it and then get the bye to the WTT finals, then wrestle the WTT challenge tournament and win that thus negating the need for the WTT finals and Final X. No one would ever do it but it would be funny if they did.

No...BAD IDEA......you would have to "wrestle" with yourself...…..which I am told causes blindness.

Absolutely no disrespect to some on that list, but assuming that they aren't our #1's, I'm guessing this is the less important of Pan Am competitions?
I think that our top guys at 57, 65 and 70 are more concerned with the US Open the following week as it is way important, also 79 bc Dake is probably planning on 74 for the Open. Also no disrespect to the guys manning those weights at Pan Ams but they wouldn't be our guys at those weights anyway.

The NLWC sure likes to wait until the last minute (week) to register guys.

Zain, Joseph, and Hall are not yet qualified for WTT (contrary to a claim in this thread above).

Below is the link with the list of those qualified for WTT. Berge, Nolf, Brooks, Nickal, and Cassar are already qualified, though it makes sense for many of them to wrestle (especially Nolf since no one sits in the finals of Final X yet).

I think AJ Nevills is going to give it a try too if his ankle is OK. Someone needs to convince Zach to enter at 125. How many times do we get to see 3 brothers all in the same weight class?
