2018-19 Sixers Thread

The Sixers started the evening with the 33rd, 34th, 42nd, and 54th pick in the 2nd round. So far, they have traded the 33rd pick to the Celtics to move up 4 picks in the 1st round. And they have traded the 42nd pick to the Wizards for cash considerations.

and then ...

Would have been nice to get Edwards. Don't think this draft now will help much. Key was always the free agents

Murph Man tweeted this at the end of the draft, before Brand spoke with reporters. It kind of sums up how I felt about their draft at the time

Hey, many are questioning Ainge on how things are playing out, and even last nights draft. Guess we will know the big picture this time next month.
It just goes to show you what a crapshoot it all is. A year ago, the Celtics were a burgeoning dynasty. Today, they have more questions than just about anyone. They struck out on AD, appear all but certain to lose Irving and Horford, and seem to be pushing their contention window several more years down the road. Maybe free agency will present a few twists.

Sixers should make Leonard an offer he can't refuse. Replace Butler with that dude and the Sixers win the East for sure.

Sixers have a history under Harris of selling second round draft picks. He's making do with only one helicopter as it stands now, understandable.

Problem is with Max deal many teams can offer the same amount, so basically would come down to where Kawahi wants to play and that is prbably LA. The only advantage in the NBA is if you have the players sometimes depending on circumstance you can offer an extra year on the contract to entice guys to stay with their teams.....this year that is Harris and Butler where the Sixers can offer 5 yr max deals and other teams only 4 year max deals.

I tend to avoid Ford's columns, after the crap he wrote in 2011. They said, for those that are interested:

Scuttlebutt has Butler maybe going to Houston in a sign-and-trade that would supposedly bring Eric Gordon to Philadelphia.

What I read had Houston attempting to convince Butler to ask for a sign and trade. That’s the only way Houston can afford him. There’s nothing there for Philly. Thanks, no thanks. It’s better to have the cap flexibility.

How do they make the salaries match? What does Houston give us? They are star chasing too, with an eye on a championship.... not giving away good players.

I read Gordon and one other player. You’re right...that’s asking the Sixers to take Houston’s cast offs while shipping a top-15 level player. Thanks, no thanks.

Assuming Leonard would even consider Philly, how could they make that work without losing Butler and Harris?
Agree, big assumption that Leonard would consider Philly. If you can get Leonard, then I am ok with Butler leaving. Otherwise, they have to keep him. I don't see another comparable replacement. I like Harris, but I think he is much more replaceable than Butler.

@Tom McAndrew, thanks for doing the Lord’s work and posting all of these updates!!!

My initial reaction to that piece is that the author spends 1000 words breaking down the possibilities. That’s over thought. His final point is likely the right one: can Butler and Simmons both be their best on the same team? If the answer is “no,” then it’s best to just move onto Horford or another better roster fit. I can’t see the Sixers getting enough picks in return to warrant the hassle of a complex deal.

happy to provide links to good info on the Sixers.

I thought Pompey and Murph Man's articles about Simmons and Butler were interesting. Each broke down the respective situations from multiple angles.

That said, I do think in a lot of ways, the situation does boil down to whether the two players can be their best playing together. I think they can, though that's dependent on either Ben developing a jump shot, or giving up the PG role.

Horford is tempting, but I'd be surprised if he signed with the Sixers. I suspect he's going to want a max contract, and other teams are likely to be able to offer him more, and also have a more prominent role for him. With the Sixers, he'd either be a backup at the 5, or splitting time at the 4 (assuming the Sixers can re-sign Harris). The Mavericks or the Clippers seem to be the most likely landing spots for him.
