Indiana Match Thread

I was walking to my car and JB said (I think this is what I remember him saying) that the Fab 5 NCs only have 2 reg decisions on the year with 25 pins after today. Thats pretty remarkable even with the weak early season schedule.

Happy for cortez, thats a win you have to have to build confidence.

Thought Raptor could have had a TF if he played catch and release. What did he have 3-4 min of RT. He seems so quick when he commits to the shot.

There arent many IU people in the stands but I did talk to a guy with a IU jacket on in the concession line. He said the kid at 165 wasnt going (so I could stop b!tching about the length of the line). I asked why and he said it was a coaches decision. Which if I was a good journalist would have got a follow up question because that could be anything.

The Ref must have watched film on Nolf, as Jason did his Secret Move, the Ref immediately started swiping for back points, recognizing what was at hand. When you first see it it looks like a scramble.

Cortez 's slide-by was sweet.

I have no idea how Mark Hall performed that inside trip for 2 while his opponent had a Russian tie on him.

Just had a chance to watch the replay

Best Keener has looked in blue and white singlet.

Good win for Cortez.

Getting pinned by Zain might be the best outcome for these kids. Only a masochist wants 7 minutes of torture.

How are you supposed to wrestle Nolf? You can't defend, yet it might be smarter to defend than to shoot.

Is there a record for feet to back TDs? Bo's gotta be getting close.

I don't care if Indiana's Irick is undersized. Cassar's shots are quick and decisive. Not many 197#ers will be able to match him on their feet.

Not a Penn Stater, but a big Penn State wrestling guy. Was that Barbour by the coaches all match? If so, watch her during Zain/Nolf. She has an evil smirk the entire time like she enjoys the pain they are causing their opponents.

Didn’t see it mentioned -

When it was 2-1, Nolf appear to bait his opponent into a leg attack, only to have Nolf do his new Secret Move - up and over to a body / headlock w his legs to get the back exposure TD & 4 NF ?!

Crowd was in awe ... poor Indiana kid had no idea what hit him & looked dazed — only to walk right into Nolf’s cement mixer for the fall.

Inhuman.

Bo’s pin was a thing of beauty too. Some custom move.

Almost looked like a typical, standard throw-by / go-behind, but last second, it looked like Bo just hung on to the kids arm, turned the kid’s upper body, found the headlock - all in the same motion & instantly had the kid on his back.

Someone describe Mark Hall’s First takedown. Not even sure what that was. Some fluid hi-lo move that looked amazing.

The creativity of these guys is just awesome.
Nolf. No question. I spend most my time wondering what I’m looking at.

Nickal, however, wasn’t anything custom. Pretty standard on the throwby if the opponent arm flys. In that situation your arm is draped over the back of the neck and literally holding a deep deep half. It then a matter of maintaining while you grab the near leg going by and lift. Boom....on the back.

More often however, the solid opponent doesn’t fly his arm and your arm comes free...but hopefully able to grab the near leg on the way by and the more routine throwby becomes a takedown.

Not that Nickal isn’t creative, just not this time. And really, he is ridiculously fundamentally sound and aware. It’s that awareness that brought him the win vs Dean....sliding the leg over to create a TD on the edge. That was simply amazing.

That is her and I saw the smile(s) when I watched the replay last night. Shes involved in all the sports at PSU according to social media. A lot of people didnt like the hire when PSU made it, but I think she has been good for us. spends a lot of $, but what big time Univ isnt these days.

This was the first match I attended. My wife and I had a great time. I don't have much to compare it to, but I thought the atmosphere was great.

We went to Happy Valley Brewing afterwards. A word of advice... If you get the nachos, don't get 2 meals also. We split the sandwich and took the pizza home.

It looked to me like the top position was something the coaches wanted him to work on. I've seen a lot of circumstances with this staff where wrestlers seem to be doing exactly that - working on a position or technique that coaches are focusing on for improvement during the match. I think it's one thing to do it in practice and another to do it in a match environment.

Our announcer said this was first time Nolf won the best performance award for the match.
Is that really correct?
When he pinned Martinez in dual, he didnt win?

That was an away match, on Jan. 23, 2016. Roar could speak more to the specifics, but there are different awards for home and away matches. I didn't hear Byers' postgame coverage, but he may well have been referencing that it was the first time Nolf had won the award given at home duals.

Nolf won the B1G Wrestler of the Week award after the Illini away dual where he pinned IMar.

Ridge Riley Award is for home duals, Nolf pinned Imar at Illinois.

That was an away dual, and yes, it was Jason's first Ridge Riley. Away dual award is the Ernie Lucas Award.

Will be interesting to see if Keener and Cassar move up the rankings this week. Not that rankings matter much this time of year but their results can’t be lost on the folks who put this stuff together.

Doubt Keener or Cassar move up but Cortez should. Midlands and Scuffle results will probably result in major shakeups in the rankings.

Yep.

Whether the rankings show it or not I'm hoping we can close the gap on tOSU at 133,141 and 197 by tourney time.

They will likely outpoint us by 20+ points at 125. That's a lot of ground to make up when they have 10 guys scoring

BTW: I don't have 20 inch guns.;)

Here are Tomasello's scores at nationals: 24.5, 17.0, 15.5. Yes, he has actually decreased scoring each year.

Given this record, his injury situation, the hard cut, and some good competition (Suriano, etc.), he is not likely to outpoint us by 20+. Could happen, but not likely.
