Is the B1G swallowing up Pitt?

Franklin had interviews lined up with the Browns and the Redskins that he bypassed to take the PSU job. Both of those NFL teams then hired substandard coaches. Franklin probably could have had either of those jobs. If he wanted to be in the NFL, he would already be in the NFL.

Contrast that to O'Brien, who had his agent leak the Penn State job offer to try and leverage it to land an NFL job. They pursued that for a couple of days, to land the Jacksonville spot for christ's sake, before finally "settling" for the Penn State offer.

Franklin is a PA guy, dreamed of playing for Penn State when he was in high school, and can make all the money he needs and have all the security he wants at Penn State. He's building something for the long haul. No guarantee about anything in this life, but he isn't a guy who is lusting after the NFL. There are college guys, like Urban Meyer, who want to coach in college. I think Franklin is one of those guys.
So Franklin having NFL interviews lined up proves he has no interest in the NFL? Curious logic

In his two winning seasons at Vandy he beat teams with a cumulative record of 71-148. In 2012 the only teams he beat with a winning record were Ole Miss and NC State both of which were 7-6. In 2013 during the regular season the only team he beat with a winning record was Georgia at 8-5. His record was built by beating teams like Austin Peay 0-12, UMass 1-11, UAB 2-10 and Kentucky 2-10.

I think the 9-4 seasons in consecutive years is not so impressive when you look a little bit further into them. I have conceded he is a good recruiter but am not sold on him as a good coach.

And Vanderbilt goes 3-9 in 2014 after he leaves. What a coincidence.

"you're fooling yourself to think he won't listen if the NFL comes calling."

The NFL has already "come calling" and he didn't bite. Logic! That's rich.

Son, there were dozens of kids from the South on the Pitt roster, and it wasn't because Majors had "connections". Ask your grandfather about how the Golden Panthers operated, how they got caught, and what Pitt did when faced with a few hard decisions.

And as always, ask him about the great Burt Grossman, who famously stated that when he went from Pitt to the NFL, he had to take a pay cut. I believe that line is in Sports Illustrated.

I know all about the Golden Panthers. They operated the same way all big time booster organizations did. If you think the same things weren't happening at PSU you're naive.

It is comical watching these Pitt fans try to convince themselves that the 7 years during the late 70's were the norm for Pitt. I guess it was Steve Pederson's fault in the 80's and 90's. Thus far, Narduzzi has done the same thing Paul Chryst did at Pitt. Actually, I think Pitt was a little more successful recruiting upon Chryst's arrival. The only difference so far is that Narduzzi uses twitter and photoshop.

The Golden Panther story is actually a bit more interesting than that.

It was glaringly obvious that BoB had aspirations of being an NFL head coach. I don't see those same aspirations from CJF. Is he quoted somewhere as saying he aspires to be an NFL head coach?

That being said, I'll say the same thing about Franklin as I did about O'Brien...if the NFL wants you it must mean you're doing something right at Penn State. If that's the case, good luck sir and next man up!

I love when opposing schools use the NFL lure to put a school down. Lol. Yeah, I'd much rather have some half-wit that's there for 10 years with .500 records, just for the sake of having him. Morons.

Penn State pays top dollar for its head coach, they'll always be able to find suitable replacements. Especially if a trend starts where WE ARE a gateway to NFL head coaching. Fine by me!

BUT Franklin can't coach remember....why would the NFL want him?
It's yet to be seen if they will want him. He's going to have to beat the top teams like OSU. He hasn't shown that he's capable of doing that regularly. He's going to be hard pressed to even win his division with Urban and Harbaugh around.

Nuff Said.

He's a "terrible game day coach" yet he's leaving in 4-5 years.
If he doesn't produce the natives will be restless...and if he manages to be successful he'll parley this into a better job e.g. NFL The highest level for his profession...the big time

Pitt Guy and Pitt is # 1

Answer me 1 question. Narduzzi is great and Paul Chryst sucked, right?

You realize that on June 28th of 2012, Paul Chryst's first year that he had 12 commits already including Scott Orndoff and Travon Chapman. Many of the commits are more highly rated than Pitt's current huge class of 3!

Don't worry, he'll justify it somehow. He's over here pouting now and he'll figure out a way to convince himself Pitt is the better program. LOL, f-ing idiot.
You must be a hit at parties...such a charmer...and no worries about disarming folks with your intellect

And he has the "pat signal". Of course, it gets little use.

gotta admit...you're playing both sides of the fence like all Pitt fans. Franklin sucks...but he's going to the NFL. makes no effin sense.

we hear both sides of the fence comments quite frequently.

We're seeing The Greatest Hits of Pitt arguments. This is using a team that just won a National Championship as their surrogate in the discussion. When is Pitt going to be better than Florida State and win the ACC?

They can no longer kid themselves that they are on Penn State's level. They need to use other teams in the Big Boy club of college football.

Yeah, I'm just not understanding something here....how is CJF a terrible game day coach but going to the NFL as well?

I mean, this is why these boards are ridiculous. No one can even remember what they wrote. Their opinions change with the wind.

Is he going to the NFL based on his recruiting ability? Do some people know more than we do and is the NFL going to start recruiting college graduates instead of drafting?

C'mon, at least stick to the same made up bullsh*t, don't waffle.

When you get frustrated and know you're wrong, it's hard to say it. He'll just keep moving the line.

Win the ACC??? Hell, when will they be over .500 in the ACC while playing in the easiest division in the Power 5? Baby steps first.

I never said he sucked. I said from my vantage point he is a good recruiter but not a very good game day coach. I never saw him coach at Vandy but did catch some PSU games last year where he didn't seem to be on top of things like player substitutions or clock management.

With the Rooney rule in the NFL a viable African American HC candidate is always going be on folks radar with a modicum of success.

This just keeps getting better and better. I wish there was a popcorn emoji. I can just sit back and read this soap opera all day.

Terrible game day coach, but black! C'mon down!!! Lol, Gold Jerry! Gold!

We know you're a charmer.....We have seen your Youtube page, Lady's man!
I don't have a Youtube page or a Facebook page or a twitter account. I'm not a fan of social media. As far as ladies man, yes I am. Married to my beautiful wife for 33 years and have 2 great daughters, one of whom was a scholarship athlete at PSU a few years ago...first team all Big Ten one year.

you're throwing the Rooney rule as why he could potentially go to the NFL? bro, I had your back for ahwile but you're fading fast.

good recruiting has 0 benefit in the NFL, and if he's "not a very good game day coach", how the f*ck is he going to go to the NFL? c'mon man

As I said two pages ago, time to close this down, for everybody's sake. We are now all getting dumber just by being here.

He managed to go back to back 9-4 at Vandy even though he beat up the cripples. It was enough to get him a shot at PSU. If he has a couple of years where he parlays a weak schedule into 9 or 10 win seasons he'll be on the NFL radar. Like it or not the Rooney rule is very much in play. It's just reality.
