Wrestling LIVE THREAD: Penn State vs. Iowa

The big disappointment for me with Kerk was that he didn't seem to even try to get out from bottom. He seemed to just give up. It was a really big let down after last week's big win.

we win with spencer and therefore i declare us the victors in my mind palace.

congrats on the win. sorry for getting a little hot over the kem match. i stole a million takedowns in that position in high school and am passionate about merkels/merkel-adjacent holds.

I am an Angel hater and I have no idea if the clocks were in sync with the scoring clock. That said Angel didnt call the 2 until Kem engaged his leg, lifted it up. Previously it was just laying there doing nothing. There is no control with that leg until he engaes there. If time was out when he lifted his leg, then I agree with the call.

Congrats. You got 8 of 10 right. 80%. Solid B-

Actually, I got 9 out of 10 as far as calling the winner, but I had Marinelli beating Berge by decision rather than a major. My point being not that I'm amazing, but that it wasn't a really shocking outcome from the PSU perspective and was better than horrible for sure, especially AT CHA.

Glad we won. Always tough to win at Iowa; why do we keep going back there?

I think after Michigan, I expected a little more dominance. But I shouldn’t have. Wrestling at Ann Arbor isn’t wrestling at Iowa.

And, Iowa didn’t wrestle this past Sunday, which is most definitely interesting!

A win is a win but gotta be a bit disappointed with that one. Good wins at 41 and 74 against tough guys and good grind at 97 but other 7 underperformed. No doubt we will make the adjustments needed by March, but that was not our best effort.
Drew underperformed??? RBY??? I think we forget that Desanto, whether you despise him or not is a hell of a wrestler.

Wow! Warner hated that bow and arrow. He was squealing big time

We would have but injuries happen. Just like if Berge doesn’t get hurt last year you guys could have won the team title. But then if Marinelli doesn’t get hurt we probably still win. Could do this exercise all day. You wrestle with what you got and Iowa didn’t have enough tonight.

PSU were not good and they still won.
Then imagine how bad the team they beat is...

This is true.

And we still beat #2.

we are spoiled. We don’t have a guy that will pin or tech a top 5 guy. But we do have poised dudes who win. This was a fun win bc we had to work for it.

Gritty effort. Wasn’t pretty. Fighting against the opponent, crowd, and ref, and ourselves at times. Great learning.

Now, To be a hater. Iowa is incredibly boring to watch. I wish Ayala was out there. Or there was an Iowa wrestler that knew how to turn. Shoutout Skinny Tony for getting Kerk into a throw match and making it f*n. Desanto antics are always a joy too when he loses. Iowa is very good. And respect to the crowd for getting a ref to break their brain. our guys weren’t as F*n bc ya gotta respect the skill.

we still won and it won’t be close in March.

You like watching college kids in pain?

I'd probably say "Lighten up Francis" if I didn't know that you're a pretty level-headed and OK guy on this board. Nobody wants to see kids get injured, but I think ALL wrestling fans like to see their team's opponents crying out in a bit of despair or mild pain because of a hard-fought match or a legal and ruthless move.

I don’t think 125 underperformed.

You’re right, forgot about Drew - he got it done. But yes think RBY regressed from what he’s done lately against ADS. Sure he was never in jeopardy with those leg attacks, but thought he would handle him easier based on last couple matches.

Damn good match. I appreciate having Iowa. Their wrestlers always give it hell and I'm certain it's one of the things that make our team better. Also its always the best dual of the year no matter who you root for.

jmadden is kind of a big baby. If a PSU wrestler was in pain HR would have a 5-page thread on it and jmadden would say nothing.

Overall we got it done in a super tough environment, and if history knows anything the gap will only widen — but if we’re all being honest, that was a mediocre effort overall. Best is yet to come.

Average wrestling fan assessment:
125- Would have liked to see Drew more offensive and if facing Ayala may have been a different outcome. Drew has good defense but need to se more offense from neutral.

133- RBY- Seems to be able to score at will but is more of a counter wrestler. Wish he was more offensive but struggle to see a path to victory for Desanto.

141- Lee only loses if he is defensive. He is better in 2 of 3 positions and close to even in the third but when he tries to avoid the takedown he is playing to his weakness.

149- Beau has all the skills but his style at 149 is too cautious. My opinion only but he needs to wrestle as a 141 pounder at the 149 weight class.

157- Thanks for seeing this to a regular decision.

165- Berge is a quality wrestler but can get muscled at this weight. Stall calls were legitimate and he needs to make more offensive shots to look busy to avoid.

174- What a great match. 2 high quality guys and can go either way. Ref matters when they wrestle because they are so close. I think Carter is the better guy but Kim can take 4 out of 10.

184- Brooks is great but would like to have seen the major here

197- Dean needs bette offense from neutral but he guts out a win like not other guy on the team.

HWT- I would like to thin strategy played a part with Kerk getting a feeling for upper body throws and bottom wrestling since the match was locked. From space Kerk should beat Cass easily but from what I see I am not so sure. Think Kerk is highly more talented and the staff will have hime ready but would have liked to see a better performance tonight.

Regardless we won, WE ARE!

I agree you could see the Carver effect with eirman and Marinelli matches. If that's anywhere else bull doesn't get a major imo.

This! Flew over there, in their arena, in front of their crowd and got the W. A good night for us.

And the best thing is, Brands isn’t gonna have to apologize for winning.

Whatever the f*** he means by that…

I'm going to do a poll tomorrow when I'm sober again. But right now, wrestler of the match, Gabe Dean.

Never laced it, C*’s ankle is over Kem’s ankle that is not a lace

As far as Drew goes, thats just how he wrestles. Has always been that way and wont change now. Hell Im happy with 1 point wins or close loses at 125 after the last few years. Kid is elite defensively.

I’m struggling to believe this myself, but someone on HR just posted that Penn State looked bigger than Iowa at most weigh classes and then someone else seconded it and said it makes them wonder

Someone please tell me where we looked big or bigger at a weight class. Please.

Can't be disappointed in Hilde getting a major, though he nearly waited too long.

RBY looked like he wasn't prepared for ADS in his "hyper attack" mode. RBY was able to defend, but was on his heels most of that bout. A strange match.

149 and 157, unfortunately, went pretty much as expected. Bartlett is solid but doesn't have much offense, and needs to get better from bottom. BearClaw is who he is.

Berge just isn't in the same class as the top guys at 165. Anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding himself. Thought he could keep it closer against Marinelli, but his style is just begging for stalling calls at HRC. It was an ugly match for Berge.

Agree it wasn't Brooks at his best, but Assad isn't a stiff and was just trying to avoid a major.

Kerk's bout was disappointing, but could be a good learning experience for him.

Lee and C-Star with gritty wins against really good competition. And Dean did what he had to do, a huge match in the dual.

The replay showed the clock - Kem absolutely does not lace Carter's leg. Carter's leg and foot are, in fact, on top of Kem's leg (i.e., making it impossible for Kem to finish Merkle which would require his leg to come through Carter's leg and GO OVER TOP Carter's leg so his foot is over-top and on far-side of Carter's leg in a reverse figure-4 position.)

Sorry. Wrestling is a combat sport. Your goal is to break and beat the man across from you. By any legal means necessary. There's no hiding, no second string substitute. It sucks ass when it's your man getting beat, but it's part of the sport. It always has been, hopefully it always will.

I've watched Spencer run a few double arm bars that got to be just as painful as the bow and arrow.

PSU looked bigger at 125, for sure. Maybe 184, but not much. Other than that, no way.
