Ok state v iowa

I’ve only watched Ayala wrestle a few times, but I’ve been really impressed. And he looks like a guy that might grow into 133 or even 141 with a couple years in the weight room. He has a redshirt year to take yet too. How’s that full court press thing work on a guy we want to enter the portal?

Step 1: BRANDS MAKES HIM HATE THE SPORT !!!!

Step 2: FULL COURT PRESS !!!!

Like everything else, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. I don't doubt there is some frustration on Drake's part right now. Injuries (especially first time injuries, I don't recall him ever getting hurt in HS) can be very mentally depleting in addition to physically. There are probably days here he says I hate Brands but you say things you don't mean sometimes when you are angry. Possible he wants to sit out and apply for the hardship year rather than wrestle braced up in the postseason but feels he has to for the teams' sake. That's all speculation on my end of course.

Maybe his dad is blaming Brands for how his injury was handled and he’s been injecting himself into the situation. Hmmm - something familiar about that.

Hey JM. Serious question. Why are Iowa fans so negative on Ybarra? Lately, he’s been given returning AAs tough matches. What is the issue that I’m not understanding? Dude has only like 7 collegiate matches to his name.

edit: 6 D1 matches in his career. Two of them against AAs. A third against a highly ranked r16 guy. Combined record of the 5 opponents he lost to is 70-12.

Ybarra has always seemed to be the odd man out for Iowa's lightweight ... he overlaps with Drake and Jesuroga is coming in.

Ayala took over once Spencer decided to have surgery and looked good. Then he gets hurt and has to miss time. I think it’s more frustration over our top 2 options being out and Ybarra being a completely different style. He did have a couple nice TD’s against Mastro last night but then he gives up a TD with a second left. Just adds to the frustration. And some posters have no clue that you don’t just plug in a new guy and he is going to dominate like Lee.

The issue is probably the same one a bunch of our fans have with whomever we put on the mat with a sub-.500 winning percentage. Most appreciate the effort and recognize progress, a vocal minority perseverate on their expectations not being met and overanalyze as a coping strategy.

I feel like they’re pretty harsh on him, especially considering his experience. Maybe I’m reading it thru my blue and white goggles though. I sometimes think this board does the same on Beau, but to a much lesser degree.

He's had a tough schedule (most 125 he's wrestled are Top 15 caliber to AA caliber) but his one D1 win, he won in SV against the Army guy who has 3 wins (that Baylor Shunk beat 8-4 even) He's getting better though but a blue chip lightweight who has a year in the Iowa room, I think it's fair they expect more. IIRC, I don't think he even blew the D3 competition out the water at Luther.

'If' Drake gets happy feet, I seriously doubt he leaves the state. Iowa city, maybe, but he's got other good local choices...

I have no idea if Ayala is thinking of transferring or if this is (more likely) message board speculation that goes nowhere.

But when kids transfer, usually it's to one of the other programs that recruited him, where he's already familiar with the coaches.

Ohio State was his other finalist. And Tan Tom will need a 125 when Heinselman graduates.

He also visited Iowa State, Northern Iowa, North Carolina, Michigan and Minnesota.

Just so I'm clear here...

There is no indication that anything is going on with Ayala, except something a guy's friend's son said?

Fans can be disgusting/nasty at times. Happens in every sport, though football being the most popular has the most crazies and going-over-the-deep-end'ers.

As far as this board, it represents a very small minority of all wrestling fans and we do an ok job of "moderating" our own. I'm in a position to talk to loads of fans, all or close to all are very supportive of Beau and every other wrestler on the team. Many are long-time fans that have seen the lean years and are grateful for today. A minority of the more recent fans ... not so much.

One of my favorite Penn State Teams was the year that was canceled due to Covid.
I was super anxious to see if Cael could get the boys to over perform..
The "room" guys at Penn State are incredible.. The dedication it takes to become a Division 1 wrestler is amazing.

NIL money from Samsonite would be an incredible way to announce something....

I posed a question to see if there were any others who heard similar thoughts. I thought it odd. For the record I said I did not believe what I heard just thought it strange that nobody appears to be talking about an injury with this kid in particular.

You're saying no one is talking about an injury to Drake Ayala?

Yea, I was a bit surprised by that comment as I don't follow them very closely, but I thought Brands said he wasn't going against PSU because of a shoulder injury suffered in an earlier dual (can't remember against who - think it was dual prior to his Heinselman loss as the implication was it contributed to that loss).

No that’s wrong. Brands did not say that, in fact everyone thought Drake was wrestling prior to the dual. And the injury occurred in practice.

Didn't somebody at Iowa specifically cite it as a "shoulder injury"? I know it wasn't disclosed prior to match, but I thought Brands said in post-match presser that he couldn't go because of his shoulder?

Actually thinking about it more, I think Brands only referenced a medical situation and said something like - when he returns is completely up to Drake Ayala. Some interpreted that to mean it was a function of how much pain he could wrestle with....

I thought I heard the friend’s son might have been wearing a Penn State t-shirt?, thus he’d enter into the transfer portal to come to Penn State?😏

Im a little nervous to reply after all of the responses lol. But I think it's up to him is brands speak for "I think they can go" but I'm leaving it up to the wrestler.

This is similar to my interpretation with the implicit understanding 'He is medically cleared to wrestle.' Simlar words were used with DeSanto.

I also seem to recall statements about young wrestlers 'lacking confidence to compete for a time following their first significant injury' accompanying that kind of coachspeak. I think it is a reference to the wrestler's discernment between pain and potential for further damage when competing with an injury.

Relax. Im Just having fun with it.

Custom made insoles are well worth the money btw. I know why he wants them back!
