OT: Rock n Roll HOF nominees

Huh? She’s been around for five decades...she’s won 10 Grammys, sold 70 million records, she’s won two career achievement awards. She’s not called the Queen of Funk because of one song. She’s probably more qualified to be in the HOF than almost anyone else on the list....assuming funk artists should be in the Rock N Roll HOF. If you don’t, that’s a different argument, but she’s far from a one hit wonder.

And her one big song was written by Prince. Love Chaka....

Damn, I'm so tired of this predictable script. BWI needs better writers.

It's very strange. The acts among those receiving the most fan votes last year who didn't get in (Dave Matthews Band, Pat Benatar, Soundgarden) have now been completely left off. That must be to avoid the criticism if they top the fan vote again and still don't get in.

Off the top of my head I would guess Paul McCartney?
Here is another hint, but you need to name the associated acts.

Thank you for enlightening me to do some more research. I have only heard I Feel For You which was popular in the 80s which made me think she was just a one hit wonder. I guess I am not as up on my music as I thought I was.

It's a solid career; but for those keeping track The Weeknd has 10 Top Ten singles and three platinum albums (out of the four he's released) and has been around about a decade. I think Benatar should be in though.
Record sales are a poor measure of quality. The Monkees sold more records than Rory Gallagher did.

For the example you provided record sales are a good measure of quality. You might look for a different comparison to support your point.

Around 1977 on a walk around State College, I saw a stack of records piled next to a garbage can. Tapestry was one of them and I still have it.....My long time theory is that there was a bad breakup and the jilted lover tossed out a bunch of albums.

LOL, your story made me think of this...
One of my favorite scenes from this movie...

Carole King is the obvious choice.....followed by Tina Turner, Dionne Warwick and Todd Rundgren. However this thread is answered in generational responses. Sorry....but I know or heard of few of these nominees. The Rock & Roll HOF has decided to be a one stop music recognition house and be inclusive to all genres of music.

I think the honor of getting into HOF is getting watered down and not as prestigious anymore. I think an act shoult have transcended generations, or did something cutting edge, or paved the way for other groups or some other innovation for their time to be able to get in.

Exactly why Emerson, Lake and Palmer should have been in years ago. They are not even nominated again, pretty mind blowing in my book. Forget the fact they were brilliant musicians.

If the RR HOF is based just on the body of work - like them or not - REO Speedwagon should be in - or at least nominated. The hits they turned out in the 70s and 8os dwarfed some of the current members

Three Dog Night probably sold more records than the entire list combined.

Glen Campbell, Carol Kaye, and the rest of the Wrecking Crew played on more records than the "committee" could fathom.

They're not welcome though. For some reason.

Looking ahead - some notable first time eligible artists in 2022....

Eminem
Fatboy Slim
Fiona Apple
Limp Bizkit
Nickelback
Spice Girls

In other words, gonna be a lot of artists inducted who have been waiting a while. Of the 2022 newly eligibles, only Fiona Apple and Eminem would get my vote (or any serious consideration at large).

Wow that is a WEAK class, I mean Spice Girls, Limp Bizkit and Nickelback 🤮

I'm going out on a limb here. Three Dog Night > Nickelback and the Spice Girls...

I will openly start rooting for Nickleback and Limp Bizkit to get in just so I can watch the music snobs go ballistic for the rest of time. Also, there would be something ironic in getting to see Eminem sitting next to Fred Durst at the hall of fame ceremony. Should probably add Carson Daly and Christina Aquilera for completeness on that one.

I see what you did there....nicely done.

Go Gos should definitely go in. After watching the documentary I didn't realize how they broke the industry wide open for chick bands.

Tina Turner should already be in there as well as Carole King.

Todd Rundgren I don't know enough about.

The others, meh. I laugh at Jay-Z being nominated. I like Devo but they were a niche 80s band. Chaka-Kan was a one hit wonder.

Chaka was not actually a one hit wonder.

But either way, you are right, the HOF is basically the Hall of Participation. You go, Cleveland.

I would imagine there's a little more of a "get 'em before they're dead" mentality when it comes to the R&R HOF than many others.

Excellent point, and the same could/should be said of the Muscle Shoals Horns and the Swampers.

The also play the political game. Just ask Ted Nugent. Can you imagine what he would do and say if ever inducted?

He’d have to do something worthy first. That said, it’s a place where a lot of political minded artists have shown restraint in the past. See Bruce Springsteen few years ago.
