Penn State - Ohio State Dual Thread

Did your Slushfund buy the BJ center yet or do you still rent it out? Easy to have good attendance when you stand at the top? No? Shall we view the comparison attendance over the last 50 years?
Do you know from the late 50's through the mid-80's, a period of about 25 years that the Baltimore Orioles won more games than any other MLB team. Oh yeah, they suck now.

You guys were awesome under Gable, he hasn't coached for 20 years. Sorry, new sheriff in town, his name is Cael Sanderson and he isn't even 40 yet.

Ryan starts babbling about that the dual should have an impact on the B1G and NCAA tournament and it currently does not. Tom does not understand that at the B1G tournament at a minimum, BoJo, Martin, and Moore all just lost the possibility of a #1 seed while their PSU counterpart will have that seed. Harder road to the championship.

If the dual did count towards the tournament championships, the favorite would then have a bigger lead making it easier to win the tournament.
He understands it full well. It's a risk he's willing to take, because he can't beat Cael in the NCAA tournament without the deck stacked in his favor.

Wrestling history before 2011 just goes away right? Time another Hilter caption gif to put Iowa in it's place
Now, come on. You are bright enough to get it.
Eventually nobody cares to hear those "back when I was a young man stories." The Hawks have a great wrestling history. Now let's put this all in perspective. This season might just be the best coaching job in Tom's run, and they are going to finish 4th in the Big10 regular season standings. If they have an outstanding off-season they have a legitimate shot at finishing 3rd in the Big10 and NCAAs. If they slip at all, 4th in the Big10s and 6th or lower in the NCAAs are distinct possibilities.

Just 5 years ago could you or any Hawk fan ever imagine Tom Brand's best coaching job ending hopefully with 3rd place finish at NCAAs, or a 4th place Big10 dual season?

I can’t ever recall Tom directing anger at his wrestlers like that. Maybe I’m totally off base but he seriously looked like he was going to lose it a few times and if there weren’t nearly 7000 people there to witness it that he may have lost control and laid hands on someone. I’ll rewatch the match tomorrow but I seriously felt uncomfortable seeing the anger on his face as he screamed at his kids. I hope I’m not being unfair, maybe I am but he really seemed to be borderline psychotic at times.
Tom was as cool as always. Didn't you see Tom's interview?"This dual deosn't change a thing"

Here is one, pretty good. He downplayed how important the dual was.
In the larger picture, very few people living Turkey, Iraq, Russia or China give a hoot about last night's Rec Hall wrestling match.
Wrestling fans across the board certainly cared enough to pay attention. Claiming it meaningless is probably a solid coping mechanism for the guy who frequently loses this match-up.

Especially when he put a lot of emphasis on this dual. Special bus, robes, calling Cael out on twitter with the BJC comment.

TO$U and Ryan did everything they could to hype this.

during the match Ryan was yelling at the Refs and his guys.

After the match he was humble Tom and his guys cant be found.

Our guys and staff just went about their business, prematch, during the match and post match.

#cultureproblems

No way. Carson should have that in his man cave for the rest of his life.
when he hip tossed Nato early on , that was when I took a huge step to losing my voice,as did most of Rec Hall. What a "I came to wrestle" statement. This guy might never do another thing for PSU,but he will be remembered forever by those who loved his efffort. here's hoping there will b more!!!!! What a night !!!!!!

Good point! I'm sure that you praise the accomplishments of the 1950 UNI national championship team as indicative of where UNI is at today, eh?

By it's nature, success breeds envy. We all witnessed that with Iowa during the Gable era, and we're witnessing it now with Cael's reign at Psu. But let us not forget 5 short years ago they were petitioning to remove wrestling from the summer olympics, and now the sport is growing, surging and thriving like it never has before. I'm not saying Cael deserves all the credit for this, as it has most certainly been a community effort, however there is no denying that Cael has served as a great ambassador to the sport and for this we all win and all should be grateful.
How about a shout out tonight on Fallon for the boys

Annieat285 and I drove about 6 hours each way to see Saturday's match in person. We had to drive through pre-dawn snow conditions on Sunday morning on 99 and 80 heading back.

And you know what? I'd do it again in a flash.

Best moments:

1. The crowd at Rec Hall on its feet many times during the night but most impressively during the Cassar and Nevills matches, where the entire third periods saw everyone on their feet and screaming so loud you couldn't hear the buzzer when there were stoppages.

2. Bo pulling out the late match backpoints to get the bonus.

3. Kuhn tossing Tomasello through the cover under the main table to his back.

4. The way so many people didn't want to leave at the end of the match, including me. You just wanted to bask in the atmosphere as long as you could.

5. Tom Ryan flipping out and embarrassing Moore at the end of the third period of the 197 match. If I'm the parent of a recruit, that kind of lack of class would give me pause.

Two things ran though my mind during the match.

One, do you think Aaron Brooks and his parents are feeling good/great/over the moon about his commitment to PSU? I am just imagining it's over the moon after being in Rec Hall Saturday night. This one persisted the entire night.

Two, the thing that kept running through my mind during Kuhn's match was Nick Suriano. What is the thinking process that would lead a guy to give up a role in something like the Ohio State dual to go to a school that loses to Nebraska, Lock Haven, Illinois and every top ten team they've faced? They tied North Carolina. The highest ranked team they have beaten is Northwestern. I just don't understand and I guess I never will. Don't have to, really, I'm happy to have the guys we do.

Does anyone have video of Ryan berating Moore after the 197 match?
I only saw him with heated instruction in between periods and during stoppages... didn't see anything at the end (only because the TV didn't show it)

To be fair, Gable actually did coach Iowa for their last three championships, although it wasn't "official".

It was actually during the stoppage with around 4 seconds left in the 197 match. He left his corner to scream at Moore at the edge of the mat.

I did not see it but I wasn't looking. When I get home from work I'll check it out on the DVR.

Glad your trip was safe.

After reading your post I caught myself thinking that is strange, I had not thought about the Rutgers kid until you mentioned him.

A lot of guys had a hand in this one, 125 kept to a major, zain tech, Joseph, Bo majors obviously Cassatt, total team effort, with Nolf it was no contest?
Definitely a team effort but I think it terms of a outcomes vs expectations hierarchy, (1) Cassar had the biggest ask, to simply beat Moore, followed by (2) Bo bonusing the #2 at his weight. (3) Kuhn was a bit of an unknown wildcard but I think everyone would've said, ok yeah, what'd we really expect if he'd gotten tech'd, and just how he looked in the first perhaps inspired the team. Certainly the crowd. And (4) Nick getting a takedown on Snyder to start the match, effectively killing Snyder's chances at a 13 point major, thus icing the match.

After those four pretty much everyone met expectations. Maybe Cenzo majoring the #6 guy at 165 is worth mentioning, but Campbell has been fading lately. Zain tech'ing Hayes from a 4-1 deficit was great but he'd probably tell you he was disappointed in not getting the fall.

I expected to be down by 10 after the first two matches. After they were over, I felt like we had picked up a free bout win with the three point difference between low expectations and reality. Then Lee threw a care into me, but that team is guttier than hell. So happy for them.

I know it's time to move on to Iowa but....

Have to say that Kuhn's throw in the first period against Nato has to be the loudest I've ever cheered at a live event. Gosh that first period was just incredible drama. Best of luck to Carson going forward.

I lost my voice by the end of the first weight, it definitely started with the first period!! BTW, I still do not have it back, I doubt Mrs. 86PSUPaul is complaining....

As I soaked up the amazement of Saturday’s win, I imagined a conversation between Cael and Tan Tom before the dual where Cael calmly offers to spot tOSU one wrestler to make it more fair.
Cael: “I’ll take one starter out of our lineup, you pick.”
Tan Tom: “NOLF!” (without hesitating)

Could you see TT picking anyone other than Nolf to sit if given the choice?
