PSU - Iowa Dual Thread

It is kind of funny that many of the fans of the team who won 7 out of 10 are coming across as dissapointed when compared to the fans of the team that just lost 7 out of 10.

My few comments on some Iowa guys:

Gilman won and I honestly don't have much of an issue with how he wrestled the 3rd, but his comments afterwards were amusing b/c what my eyes saw was a senior at home who was more than happy to just eek out a W against a true frosh.

Clark - I hope he gets as close to 100% healthy because I've never had a problem with him. He's a good hard wrestler and I look forward to seeing how 133 plays out at B1Gs and NCAAs.

Sorenson gets so much flak on here (and HR) because we all see the flashes he shows but then a majority of his matches are absolutely miserable to watch. Maybe Zain was off, maybe not? Either way, from a wrestling fans perspective that match was awesome and I honestly hope BS continues to be aggressive in all his matches the rest of the way.

Kem Dog - Dude did nothing offensive, but sometimes you are just overmatched and he did what he had to do to get stalemates. Can't really knock him for that.

Meyer- We saw the good Meyer, which one shows up next match? This match (for completely diff reasons) probably helps to really fuel both guys moving forward.

Brooks- Outside of Clark, I think Brooks is my favorite Hawkeye of the past 4 or 5 years. Bo is just Bo, it happens.

Stoll- Really awful news, hoping for a speedy recovery. A guy that big with knee and acl problems will be tough.

Assuming Iowa is at the BJC next year, it could get really ugly for the Hawks.

I've been visiting this board for a long time but decided to pull my shirt. Suriano may have lost a battle but the war for B10 and NCAA's is soon to follow. I like his chances after seeing him lock horns with Gilman.

Perhaps the worst thing that Sorensen could do was motivate Zain. I'm guessing next time they meet Zain will be ready and as determined as ever. Not sure if it was the atmosphere or if he wasn't feeling well. Whatever the case may be it won't matter.

Not at all worried about Mark Hall. I'm sure no one is more disappointed than he is after that match. It's like seeing Haley's comet. Just because you've seen it once doesn't mean that you ever will again.

Fuel for the fire for these young men. Can't wait to see how they respond. I wouldn't want to be the next wrestler to face anyone of them.

Seemed to me that the Iowa wrestlers were bigger than their opponents at several weights. 125, 141, 149, 165, 174, 197. The two programs approach cutting weight differently. I look for PSU to be a little fresher come tournament time; maybe the weight issue has something to do with that.

A number of things didn't go as well as expected for PSU, and it's a 26-11 final. What a statement for the program.

Important to remember in general. We needed to beat Iowa in a dual in CHA. And we smacked them.

Suriano did not need to win tonight. He needed to learn for the next time. When it matters. Hall has already won huge matches...so some learning matters. Sorenson may be thinking he can win but Zain now armed with new information and a match he was a bit tired ...I would expect Zain to adjust and do so in a big way when it counts. Like he always does last year Cenzo.....will learn to adjust better during a match. Nolf....when they meet again...for hardware...oh boy. And maybe Jimmy found a little something when he was taking an all too familiar wrong path.

We didn't wrestle well, but took what we wanted out of a hostile arena where weird things happen.

Sorensen earned my respect in that match.
First time Sorensen actually attempred to wrestle Zain. This will allow Zain to make an adjustment or two and move forward being even better.
With that said, Sorensen wrestled one helluva match. Impressed me also.

Dude...stfu. The kid is runner up NC, and currently #1 in the nation... and you think he has a character problem? Do you have a clue as to what that takes as a person? Stfu...you're a dick to call him a classless punk.
WIthout taking a position on GIlman himself: do you seriously think an athlete that successful cannot possibly have a character problem? OJ Simpson, Mike Tyson, Lenny Dykstra, Ugueth Urbina, and a litany of others might disagree.

As far as I'm concerned, it's now hammer time. Zain, Nolf, Cenzo, Hall, and Nickal - may be down a little in duals and rounds at the NCAAs until those guys step up - then our score will mount as fast as Secretariat running down the field around the Clubhouse Turn at Pimlico

I didn't hear Tim Hawkeye Johnson calling for stalling against Gilman, as he did against Nico last year, did I?

Sorry, but that guy is a homer, and the voice of wrestling on national television, should not be a homer. I didn't like it when CBS had Tom Heinsohn, and I don't like it in wrestling either.

At least he had to take a 26-11 molly-whomping at Carver like a man.

I have no problem with him losing a match. My issue is we just pulled his shirt in CHA for his first PSU dual. It doesn't make sense.
His shirt was pulled the first match after the staff found out Cortez will not be available. The decision surprised me period, but nothing wrong with the timing

Didn't they find out Cortez was unavailable for the season before Rutgers?

Very, very happy with the win. Carver is a really tough place to wrestle and the boys got the job done. Most happy for Jimmy as that was a gutty performance in a hostile environment. He could have given up halfway through the match but instead turned it on. Bo was Bo. Love watching him wrestle as he is a big move highlight reel.

Hosted friends last evening, so just now reading this thread. The wrestling was awesome, and everything's been said (and more ) that needs to be said. Just general comments about our guys from me.
-- No one gassed, in my eyes. They wrestled hard, and some were tired, but not gassed. Maybe some on here should try going hard at a physical activity for 7 minutes and see what happens.
-- Not all the guys looked themselves, but that's just as likely the result of having a talented guy across from them. Gosh folks, our guys are good, but they're not going to dominate every wrestler they face.
-- That said, Nolf and Bo dominated two very good wrestlers.
-- I feel horrible for Stoll, and worse because it's two years in a row. Wrestling is a brutal sport, tied or close to football as the #1 injury-rate sport in the NCAA's.
-- We won at CHA. Not sure many of you realize the home-mat advantage of that special place, and we won 26-11!!
-- Mark Hall's our guy now. And he'll be fine...even better than fine.

For this thread...
-- I felt like I was reading the football forum at times. A couple of you are off the rails.

Times have really changed. PSU just demolished Iowa 26-11 in CHA and the Hawkeye fans are crowing with joy and the PSU faithful is frustrated. ( 3) 5/th year seniors for Iowa won against two true freshman and a backup. The expectations for the 2 programs have certainly changed. The sad thing is the gap only widens from here.
We learned tonight that they are who some thought they are- not a title threat team. Time to move on and find out if tOSU is a title threat or not. OSU might be the only real threat.

Strange days indeed. Hard to imagine the Iowa fan base celebrating moral victories after getting blown out by a much younger team at home.

I was wrong about suriano vs gilman. I thought there would be more of a gap between the 2 and there clearly is not.

So James...did you officially make the leap and get "patched" over as they say in the biker world or are you still pretending to be an Iowa State fan?

I could careless if he is #1 in the country or a NC runner up. I DO know he illegally slammed Waters, shows no respect to other wrestlers or teams, running into other teams huddles, goes crazy after a match in the Jr. worlds, his lack of sportsmanship when he lost his wrestle off to Clark, getting into a shouting match after Okie state while shaking hands for crying out loud. Good thing is Okie states Rogers said he will pray for Gilman. Someone recently posted on here a dual he lost for his HS team because of his outbursts. These are just incidents off the top of my head, I am sure there are more. Now he gives a delusional interview about last nights match. Go ahead and read the thread and see what other people think about him.

I have my opinion of Gilman, and if you do not like it too bad. At least I am stating facts why I have that opinion of him. I will root and cheer for guys like a Clark, Zain, Wright, etc. If you wanna watch a really good match, watch Gilman vs Moisey. ;)

Amen, brother. Purely from a fan perspective, what makes it even sweeter is Jimmy has been the Hawkeye Report's favorite whipping boy for a couple of years now (after Downey, that is). Jimmy really dug deep there and Carton dwarfed him - well done!

Jimmy was great. To quote Powers Booth from Red Dawn - he stopped their momentum "butt cold"

Jimmy was ALL HEART baby. ALL HEART. Kept bringing the fight, kept bringing the takedowns, and won the match. It's what he is all about.

Good post Roar. I agree with 95% of it. One exception: Carton gassed. But Jimmy made him gas.

I'm officially a PSU fan, and man does it feel good! What choice do I really have? Cyclones suck and not a big fan of the trash talking PD3/PD2 train wreck. Can't join a delusional fan base over in iowa city as that gets old really quickly. I will always have a soft spot for the Cyclones, but that might be it. They don't even care, so why should I? Yep- I'm all in!

Dunk, at our next board meeting we need to task the Membership Committee with developing something like this:

I'm coming out to Happy Valley for a dual meet sometime in the next couple of years. I expect to be put in a little room and take my polygraph test while tapping my foot to "Fight on State" without breaking focus or answering wrong to one of Amalone's pointed questions. I understand I'm just an unrecruited verbal at this point.

Nothing wrong with having an alternate team to root for when your main team is down. I would say Va Tech is my second favorite team. I like what Dresser has done there and they get their share of PA guys.
I'm kinda partial to NC State after 2014.

My second favorite team is the University of Arizona. They don't have a wrestling team, but that does not, and will not stop me.

Plus, Cael is a Cyclone and a product of the legendary cyclone philosophy first established by Dr. Nichols. As Cael said when he took the PSU job, Pennsylvania's wrestling tradition has always been akin to Dr. Nichols philosophies regarding aggressive wrestling that lends itself to Freestyle and the International Disciplines. IOW, PSU wrestles very similar to the great Cyclone tradition first established by Nichols.

Actually, I think Penn State wrestles the PENNSYLVANIA way, as in what you see in Hershey every year. This is how it's always been in this state, we just didn't have the great coach to make it happen. As they said, when Cael was hired..."ut oh, the sleeping giant has been awakened, look out now...".

Edit: NOT a knock of Coach Koll(who I loved) or Coach Lorenzo, or Fritz or even Troy, but until Cael arrived, it was a gold mine that had not been tapped, philosophically. I say this because our kids are from all over the nation, but based in central Pennsylvania, which is the hub of wrestling, at it's core.

Well you're in luck bubba because we at HR received intel about said Amalone debriefings. Psst...be ready for this one from him...he gets real upset if you miss it for some reason:

It puts the _________ on its skin or it gets the hose again.

A)Beef Jerky
B)fire ants
C)lotion
D)Brut cologne

I know you were gonna choose ...classy guy like yourself who uses big words and such probably has himself four or five bottles of Brut plus the rumor is, that's what Cael wears...BUT CHOOSE C! Last time somebody missed this, Amalone got despondent and went away for months. Plus, we at HR are hearing he wants to personally "mentor" the new guy.

Not sure if you remember Nate Carr, but saw him wrestle quite a bit through high school (he was a year older and wrestled for an opposing school - i wrestled with another guy who would become a Cyclone, Darkus). Anyway, Nate Carr was one of the most dynamic offensive wrestlers around - got screwed out of the Championship Match and Gold Medal in Korean Olympics (88 I believe) by a ridiculously bad call favoring the Korean wrestler. He ended up winning the Bronze. One of the worst and most blatant incidents of Olympic Wrestling cheating ever and the US filed formal protests, etc... but to no avail. Always think of Nate in regards to Dr. Nichols and that classic aggressive offense style he preferred - Nate, much like Cael, epitomized that "Cyclone" philosophy that really first created the USA's emergence on the International Freestyle scene.
