PSU - Iowa Dual Thread

If you can do it, try to not watch a match, then go to the boards and read what is said. Then go and watch the matches. Its pure entertainment if you can forego the need to know what happened.

Im pretty sure in the moment I would have been as critical as others on the boards, but having a day to let the match marinate only knowing we won gave me a different perspective.

quick hitters
- our TRUE freshman lost close matches to two 5th year senior returning all american hawkeyes at their place on TV in primetime. take the names away and just say that outloud. Should make any hawkeye fan shutter and any PSU fan stand and clap.
- the worst zain could be vs the best the sorenson could be was still a win for Zain. anything more than that and its fanspeak.
- Ive always been a closeted VRaptor fan, but I may join spyker on the picket line. Was Pfar just having that bad of a night or is Cutch in small slump. Guys have figured out his 197 gameplan, so either he has to change that up or he/we could be snake bit in St. Louis
- Nato, Pletch, MyMar, BoJo, Moore, Snyder could put the HR into full snowflake mode. Popcorn ready.

"If you can do it, try to not watch a match, then go to the boards and read what is said. Then go and watch the matches. Its pure entertainment . . ."

Reading the comments being posted during Jimmy's match was hilarious after the fact. Were this a democracy, and a vote had been taken after the second period, I'm pretty sure he would have been kicked off the team, subjected to a 60-minute lecture from Spyker on proper wrestling technique, and then drawn and quartered.

Hosted friends last evening, so just now reading this thread. The wrestling was awesome, and everything's been said (and more ) that needs to be said. Just general comments about our guys from me.
-- No one gassed, in my eyes. They wrestled hard, and some were tired, but not gassed. Maybe some on here should try going hard at a physical activity for 7 minutes and see what happens.
-- Not all the guys looked themselves, but that's just as likely the result of having a talented guy across from them. Gosh folks, our guys are good, but they're not going to dominate every wrestler they face.
-- That said, Nolf and Bo dominated two very good wrestlers.
-- I feel horrible for Stoll, and worse because it's two years in a row. Wrestling is a brutal sport, tied or close to football as the #1 injury-rate sport in the NCAA's.
-- We won at CHA. Not sure many of you realize the home-mat advantage of that special place, and we won 26-11!!
-- Mark Hall's our guy now. And he'll be fine...even better than fine.

For this thread...
-- I felt like I was reading the football forum at times. A couple of you are off the rails.

"Maybe some on here should try going hard at a physical activity for 7 minutes and see what happens."

Hell, I can get winded trying to take a dump for 7 minutes.

That's inhumane. A compassionate fanbase would have him drawn and quartered first.

They train to wrestle for seven minutes. Most on here train to.... I don't see the comparison. Most on this board wrestled so we know how hard it is. This is the best program in the country for the past 7 years. Sorry, but I don't think the try and wrestle for 7 min. works.

I would say that picture suggests that Bo is calmly contemplating some arcane philosophical issue, while Brooks is contemplating...the abyss.

Btw, this morning I put Roars 7-minutes to the test. I allocated 7 minutes to finally cleaning my house. I started off at a furious pace, but approaching the 5-minute mark, my back was killing me, and I felt winded going up the stairs. I think my fatigue started off mental before becoming physical, as I hate cleaning house.
Well sounds like a more successful attempt than mine, told the wife there was a challenge for me to undergo 7 min of physical activity and let's go upstairs to test myself "her response was what are you going to do for the other 6 min". One of those times you're left speechless

I've never understood the line of thinking that people are "gassed" on the mat. When I was in college, we would wrestle three 3-3-3 matches in a row with a minute between each match in practice. If you are trained properly (I have to believe current grapplers are), fatigue should not be an issue. I was never tired in a match (which were 8 minutes then).

It's like commentators on tv saying defenses in pro football are so tired from being on the field. With just playing one way and having all the breaks that tv provides, if they are tired, they must be in the worst shape in the world.

Here is an article on the topic btw - HIT THIS HOTLINK. Even the Olympic Committee stated that Carr should have been deemed the winner by rules, but elected to only discipline the involved officials rather than reverse the match result (because Gold Medal match had already been wrestled). BTW, Nate - and all his brothers - were products of Erie, PA (NW corner of Pennsy) although he's listed as hailing from WV because I believe he went there to coach at WVU after finishing his ISU career (believe one of his younger brothers was wrestling there iirc).
District IX guy here. I'm so old I remember Fletcher Carr at CNW regionals.

I remember Fletcher also, IIRC he wrestled 180, back then it was the next lowest class from Hwt or Unl (they changed it around that time). I couldn't believe he was only 180, he looked absolutely huge.

Fletcher and Nate were two of 5 Carr brothers that won AA status - believe this is still an unmatched record (the other 3 were Solomon, Joe and Michael I believe)....the most legendary Carr brother of them all, Jimmy (youngest Olympic wrestler in history), is not even one of the 5 AAs which is a record!

Just watched it again on BTN. Say whatever about the excuse as it is irrelevant. That was a Clagon match for whatever reason. I'm hoping Sorenson gets to the finals for more than one reason now.

You never, ever got tired? Wow! Amazing!
I'm getting better every year since I competed too!:)

Jimmy did make AA once. Solomon did not as he was injured in college and didn't wrestle all the way through his eligibility. What an awesome family they are!

There is no excuse. Sorrensun wrestled the best match he possibly could and he still couldn't beat Zain. He hasn't beaten him in three tries so far. PSU went into CHA and smashed Iowa. Iowa is not a legit contender for the title. They are a 4-5 team again this year. Outside of Grillmen they don't have another guaranteed finalist in their lineup.

125 - Tomas Grillmen - He's a finalist.

133 - Corey Clarke - He's in a tough weight class and right now he's ranked #4. The #3 guy already beat him, the #2 guy is looking like he might be the only guy who can beat NATO at this point, and then there is NATO. If Clarke does not get the #2 or #3 seed in March he may not make the finals. Actually, he probably does not make the finals if he's #4. I expected him to meet NATO in the finals before the season, too.

141 - Topper Cartman - He'll be lucky to win 2 matches at nationals. Huge 141lber, though.

149 - Brandon Sorrensun - Unless he can beat Collica, who he's already lost to this year, he's not making the finals, either. Although I'll take Sorrensun over Collica if I had to bet in the semis.

157 - Michael Kemmrerer - He has the best shot at making the finals besides Tomas Grillmen. He will still have to go through Tyler Berger, and there is no guarantee he wins that. He's definitely a future star, though.

165 - Johnny Guntar - Nope. Not a finalist.

174 - Alan Mayer - He's an AA. Mid to Low, but he'll do it in wrestlebacks.

184 - Stanley Brookes - He's a high AA. He'll make a nice run in March, and maybe make the semifinals, but he won't make the finals. Not with Dean and Nickal in the way at #1 and #2.

197 - Carson Wickley - He honestly looks like a Mouse clone at 197. Both are undersized, but Mouse has shown the ability to win the close ones.

HWT - Steven Holloway - Iowa's Jan Johnson. I give him credit for going out at HWT considering he's a 197lber.

Two Olympians and 5 NCAA All-Americans (Nate a 3-timer)! As I said, had the pleasure of witnessing quite a bit of Nate's HS career from the other team's side.....without question one of the greatest offensive wrestlers that I have ever witnessed as evidenced by his domination of both Folk and Free - the fact that the corrupt 1988 Olympic Officials for his semi-final match would blatantly throw the match to the Korean wrestler (they were clearly bought as the 1988 Olympics were in Korea) -- as even FILA subsequently acknowledged (i.e., Carr won the bout but they elected not to reverse it because the subsequent placement matches had already been completed including Carr easily taking the Bronze, so they simply sanctioned the guilty judges of that match) is just disgusting and should not tarnish Nate's legacy. Nate deserved the Gold Medal in 1988 and simply dominated everybody he faced in those Olympics including Park Yang-soon just a really sad commentary regarding International Wrestling imho because everybody who has ever met Nate knows what an incredible person he is.....nicest and humblest guy in the world....rarely said anything about himself, he just went out "and did" - one of the most incredible and explosive offensive wrestlers you will ever witness as those who saw him can attest. Nate Carr beat Kenny Monday in the finals to win two of his three NCAA Titles in the only 2 years that Monday and Carr crossed over in the B12 (i.e., Carr won NCAA titles in 1981, 1982 and 1983 @ 150 lbs in his last 3 years of eligibility at ISU - the last two he won against Monday in the Finals. Monday won the 150 lb title in 1984 after Carr graduated) - Kenny Monday won the Gold at the 1988 Olympics @74kg the same year Carr was screwed @68kg. Ask Kenny Monday how good a wrestler Nate Carr was! Just ridiculous that these corrupt Olympic judges decided to unjustly blemish and tarnish a "Gold Medal" legacy that Nate so richly deserved - just disgusting.

Should make any hawkeye fan shutter and any PSU fan stand and clap.--Some of you picked Suriano and most had a close match. If I would have suggested that Cael had better not bring Hall out at Carver because Meyer would beat him, I would have been laughed out of here. Say it out loud...I'm sure some you will still reflexively giggle. Anything else is FanSpin

- the worst zain could be vs the best the sorenson could be was still a win for Zain. anything more than that and its fanspeak. So it's settled...Zain did have the flu.
I agree with you on this one, Chief. I hate talk of someone having been sick. I think Sorensen/Brands did a bang up job of formulating and executing a plan to wrestle Retherford. No other factor is worth mentioning in my mind. That being said, I think Zain adjusts and Sorensen never finds himself that close again.

When was the last time Iowa lost three straight duals? It's something that would put any big time program's fans into a panic. I'll still get some Schadenfreude from it, however.

As to "how great" Kenny Monday was.....many consider him the greatest wrestler to ever come out of Oklahoma - HIT THE LINK. Again, Nate Carr won the last two of his three consecutive NCAA titles @150 from 1981-1983 by defeating Kenny Monday in the NCAA finals (Monday won his 150 lb title in 1984 after Carr graduated).

It is kind of funny that many of the fans of the team who won 7 out of 10 are coming across as dissapointed when compared to the fans of the team that just lost 7 out of 10. ...
Do you want to know why we're disappointed?

It's because we are mean. On the forums, we might break your arm and won’t feel bad about it until the referee raises our hands. Then we’ll feel bad. We don’t know where we get it, but that’s how the Cary Kolats and Terry Brands were when they Interwebbed.
