PSU - Iowa Dual Thread

Not quite correct. Beyers said a couple of times while interviewing Coach Casey that Zain didn't look like himself out there. Coach did not go with that. See my earlier post where I summarized Coach Casey's responses on Zain.

I was referring the when the match was actually going on and during the play by play speculation was there ... didn't hear the post match as I was making myself another gin and tonic to go sit out side by the pool :)

I don't wanna be a Polly Pissy-Pants about it, but there were points left on the mat. Obviously still a grea dual... Not downplaying it.

And Iowa lost, that's the most important part.

Absoutely. We did not wrestle our best tonight, and still won the match 26-11.

125- Gilman is very beatable and still a classless punk. Stalled his ass off all 3rd period. Great effort by Suriano at CHA. He can win the whole thing.
133- I always liked Clark. Will be rooting for him to finish the year as a Champ. Carpenter did his best.
141- JG with great comeback! Shaky start but he believed in himself and showed heart.
149- Maybe Zain was off, different result at neutral site? Either way amazing battling by Sorenson and give that dude major props.
157- Kemmerer stalled his ass off. Nolf took like 10 times more shots. Score should have been much worse.
165- Again Gunther did nothing and VJ took all the shots and did all the work.
174- It pains me, but Meyer won that match. Hall will be fine though. Tough assignment for him for his first match.
184- BO IS AMAZING!!! Priceless shutting up that crowd.
197- So Cutch dominates early on getting to legs often... then for whatever reason this match goes to OT and he barely wins.
HWT- Nevills is a beast! Dude wanted that tech and got it. Bummer about Stoll, that dude is amazing at pushing guys out of bounds.

Last thought. Iowa refs suck, so biased it's pathetic.

Burroughs tweeted out encouragement to Hall, as he indicated when his 'shirt was pulled, he lost his first two bouts, and things turned out OK
Jordan was "No Where Near" the wrestler coming out of HS. Nice tweet from the champ but it's a Monday Morning QB tweet IMO...again, great encouragement from Jordan (and given their relationship...Olympic training partner etc.) but in no way can you compare Jordans college transition to Halls...no way

I agree and should note Iowa deserves a ton of credit. They wrestled their rear ends off and brought it tonight. Why I honk it's really an impressive PSU with them not wrestling their best and still winning by that margin. Bo was just beast mode and Nevills is awesome. So great to be competitive now in heavyweight

We went into Carver, did NOT wrestle our best, and still won, 26-11. Beat them by more than Oklahoma State did, at Stillwater. Everyone learns from this, and everyone gets better from this.
21Guns - you are crushing it in this thread. Totally agree with this and other post-dual posts of yours. The team went in there and won 7 out of 10; Bo with the hammer blow after the Carver crowd gets fired up; Jimmy roaring back.

Mark looked tentative and got beat. This will spur him on.

Trolls on TheMat are having their fun just like when Bubba pinned DT - I'll gladly lose some battles in exchange for winning the war.

Now, let's talk about stalling:

125: Gilman stalled the entire third period. NO CALL.
157: Kem stalled the entire match. ONE CALL.

I've honestly always liked Iowa's Gilman. Yes he stalled in the third but you would to if you were in that situation. Suriano needs to push harder to get those stall calls late. Yes Gilman is a little bit of a talker but that's apart of sports. Gilman got the takedown early Suriano didn't. If Suriano got the takedown early he would be stalling in the third also. Up to the other wrestler to push harder in the third and for the ref to also call it. Good hard fought match by both wrestlers. Also Clark is still my favorite wrestler for Iowa. I love his drive.
Go PENN STATE!

Mark is only a Freshman. It was his first match in a dual meet at Penn State. It was against an AA SENIOR with experience. Hall will get better as he developes. The most important point is he was wrestling in one of the best wrestling venues in college wrestling and wrestled there as his first match in college. Hall can learn from this and learn to wrestle for all 7 min. Seemed like on that last takedown he stopped wrestling for a split second and it cost him. He is going to be special. Just takes a couple matches to get into the grove. Seeing these guys develope over the years they are at PSU is something I enjoy watching. Let's go Penn State! Learning experience for 125 and 174 pound wrestlers! Also nice to see Zain in a close match and have him pull it out. That match will pay dividends later on!
This is all true, and it's also a great reminder that perhaps the hardest adjustment for freshmen is mental. Hall has all of the physical tools and technique, but had a couple mental lapses (including not clearing his wrists), and that's what cost him tonight. Better to learn this now than 6-8 weeks from now.

And it's a reminder of exactly how uniquely mentally tough Zain is. I've been watching him since he was at Line Mountain, seen him will himself to win so many times, including matches he physically should have lost, have yet to see him lose one mentally in 8 years. He did it again tonight, won on sheer willpower. There was no way he was going to let himself lose.

(** He'll tell you he made a mental mistake that let Mitchell Port score in OT at nationals. That he holds himself to that ridiculous standard is why he's so tough.)

Dudes on The G being all salty about pulling Hall's shirt lol. Guys lose matches. The world will turn and he will elevate his level by the end of the year.

At least he remembered his singlet, right?

Like Chickenman said, the haters are going all "Bubba-DT" on this. They have nothing else and they know damn well what is coming from here on out. LMAO.

Calling Gilman very beatable and a classless punk... makes you a classless something. You couldn't carry that kid's jock. What a dick.

you SOB, rubbing it in. ;)

so you are enjoying the move from PA to FL, I see. Enjoy it. Glad it worked out for you.

When are you going to Utah? Quite a nice ski season they are having out there.

Soon hopefully... Delray Beach is a great place to live. I don't miss 35 degrees and rain. Amazing how the sun and warmth affect your attitude. People are happy down here. Living by the beach is wonderful. I highly recommend it. In fact I have a nice single malt waiting for you. :)

Hall won the Scuffle. You don't just when the Scuffle! He is the real deal, he will get into the groove once he wrestles in a couple duals and everything will be fine. He faced a guy that was all in for all 7 min tonight. He's got to learn to win the close ones in college. I'm very optimistic after his lose, this is a great learning experience for him.

Zain won tonight on guile. Every single great wrestler has had to win a few times on guile. Nobody is exempt: Not Gable, not Cael, not Schalles, not Schultz, not Kemp, not Burroughs. Nobody. This was a perfect storm of bad, Zain was going up against Sorenson wrestling the match of his life, at Carver Hawkeye, 16,000 roaring against him, down late, and he had the guile to get in for the takedown. Even then, 99 times out of 100, he puts boots in and rides out, and Sorenson slips away yet again. Double overtime, and he finds a way, against all odds.

There is no way in hell that Collica wrestles like Sorenson did tonight, or Jordan.

As far as I'm concerned, it's now hammer time. Zain, Nolf, Cenzo, Hall, and Nickal - may be down a little in duals and rounds at the NCAAs until those guys step up - then our score will mount as fast as Secretariat running down the field around the Clubhouse Turn at Pimlico

I give Iowa credit. They wrestled their best but still got thumped in the final score. Sorensen with the match of his life and I don't think you'll ever see Alex Meyer beat Mark Hall again. Those were your bright spots.

Uh no...Gilman didn't wrestle very well, Carton looked bad in the third, Brooks?, and Wilcke brain farted and let a winnable match slip away.Overall, lots of room for improvement. I don't think Kemerer can beat Nolf but he can get closer. I doubt you thought Alex Meyer could even hang with Hall before this so until then....As for Sorensen, this is how he can wrestle...it's why we get frustrated with him at times because he is so closed up.

Iowa deserves credit. We laughed at tOSU saying Steiber was sick..... Sorenson just had a great match and has improved in not allowing Zain onto his neck at all.
I am not thrilled about Hall's shirt being pulled, but it's done now. We are definitely a better team now because of it so there is that.
Stoll out for the season is awful. Where do you rank Iowa now? 5th? That hurts.

Joseph looks great, but this is the second time he has gassed. I don't think it's conditioning, just needs to be a better manager of his energy. Can't fault him for being aggressive, but he wasted a ton of energy in that first period.

Nickal has been and still is my favorite wrestler on this squad. Love and hate the action to CHA after his pin. "Second Sucks" is great quote, hopefully he didn't throw his medal in the trash ;)

I lost my first two matches out the gate when my redshirt was pulled as a true freshman. I turned out to be alright.

Well, it's not as bad as Chris Perry was, so there is that. Look at what Perry did when he finally decided to wrestle?

AZChief, in you grades over on HR, I see Gilman "coasted," while Cenzo was "backing up." Come on, you're better than that.

Usually I agree with you, but not with Nolf. He was in on the legs all day. Great job by Kemmerer to scramble for stalemates, but IMO not likely to get better.

125-net positive. He can get out on bottom ad has defense to keep it close. If he is a little more confident on his feet nobody he can't beat.
133- is what it is. Appreciate the effort.
141- Great 3rd, had me really sad until then. Hoping he just lets it fly rest of year. He will still get beat some, but think he'll find more success that way and enjoy his senior year more. Let it fly Jimmy!
149- Did look a little off. Not sure if Sorenson keeping him off his game on his feet or if he was just trying to force things, hopefully the latter.
157- So impressive. Match never close, #2 guy in country and all he could do was hold off major.
165- not his best, but ok. Looked good early, needs to finish better. That underhook was slowing him down.
174- ouch. Hall is incredible but looks a little small to me. Think he wins 9 of 10, but has to score more on his feet. He'll be ok. Learning experience.
184-Nickal so dangerous from every position. Match was too short to take much from it other than that.
197- Didnt look great. Scares me, need him to place at nationals. Still believe he will.
Hwt- Looks to be getting better and better. Bummer about Stoll.

Meyer wrestles great and never gave up. He wrestles all 7 min and he deserves to win that. Gilman was great as always. I love Clark and his never let up mentality, he is a true wrestler that resembles the type of wrestling I've seen Iowa wrestle in the past. Carton just gassed in the third it seemed. Sorensen I feel wrestles great to his strengths and not Zains. Kemerer is going to be a stud. Loved his defensive wrestling, it's always hard to stop Nolfs shots and he did that. Brooks just got caught, he had a good shot. That match will be close in the near future at big tens. Stinks that Stoll couldn't go. That match would have been a good one. Iowa and Penn Staye rivalry is always a fun one to watch. I love the passion that Iowa's fans have and the passion the head coach has for the sport of wrestling. I'm always rooting for big ten wrestlers and teams to do good at tournaments.

I'll say it here: Jimmy has found the answer, keep it close into the third and win it there. He has outwrestled damn near everyone from the 2nd to the end. Just get there, even or down two, and he can beat almost anyone. Don't give up on Jimmy, that was all heart out there tonight, and Jimmy has HEART, and in this sport, that means a hell of a lot.

Don't think it was conditioning...he looked fine at the Scuffle. We had the same discussion about Kemerer after barely winning against Iowa State. Think he just had an adrenaline dump although one would think he has been in a ton of big matches and big time atmospheres in his career.

Just too many opportunities missed, Bo planting Sammy, and no Stoll hurt. Still, liked our effort overall...especially Sorensen and Meyer....two guys who have taken a lot of sh*t on both boards...especially Sorensen on this one.. Had a mental lapse and let Zain get in on his legs after a takedown or else he had a good shot of winning it. Still better than all the majors, TFs, and pins that were predicted.

Chief I respectfully disagree about his conditioning at the moment. Up until maybe this week he was expected to redshirt. He's a freshman in college who goes to open tournaments and I highly doubt he is in the condition that the guys who have been starters since the beginning of the year are. He looked tired to me. In no way shape or form am I saying that he lost due to his conditioning. I just think it was an issue in the 3rd. I also think Meyer had something to do with it. I agree with you that it could be adrenalin from wrestling in Carver for the first time. I think he will be much better in March than he is today. Just not as worried as some of the sky is falling people are.

Agree on some points, but Kem stalled and went all ankle grab, and on a neutral mat, he gets hit with no less than 3 stall calls.
