PSU - Iowa Dual Thread

He will see Meyer again and he will beat him on a neutral mat. At B1G's or Nationals.

Hall very well may. We should at least be concerned that Hall may not be a high-AA. Granted, I'd bet on him to end higher than Morelli or Rasheed.

285: Nevills vs. Steven Holloway

Per 1:
Nevills reaches, nothing. Nevills in on a single and gets the TD with 2:03, 2-0. Working a 2-on-1. Now a crossface. Now a little legs. RT over 1 min. 1 min left. Cuts him at 50 sec, 2-1. Nevills reaches, nothing. Reaches again, nothing. A third time, nothing. Holloway shoots, gets stuffed, and Nevills trying to spin behind and gets the TD with 4 sec left, 4-1. End. 1:19 in RT for Nevills.

Per 2:
Nevills takes down. Working up, out at 1:54, 5-1. RT down to 1:11. Holloway had an ankle but Nevills spun behind for the TD, 7-1. Stall warning on Holloway. 30 sec left. End (Holloway nearly out at the buzzer). RT at 2:25.

Per 3:
Holloway takes neutral. Warning may have been a point, as scoreboard shows 8-1. Nick in on a double and gets the TD, 10-1 with 1:30 left. Cuts him, 10-2. Nevills in on a single, and gets the TD on the edge, 12-2. OOB with 1:01. Optional start, and the esc, 12-3. Nevills in on a low single for the TD, 14-3, and cuts him, 14-4. 33 sec left. Nick in on a single and gets the TD, 16-4, and cuts him, 16-5. Another low single, 18-5, and cuts him, 18-6, and another TD, 20-6. With RT it's a 21-6 TF

PSU - 26, Iowa - 11

Some surprises, but a nice win!

Good solid ass whipping. Happy to see Hall. Not worried about him going forward. I still think he'll be on top at end of year. Iowa must be sick. Two whippings in a row and they have to cling to moral victories at this point.

BTN has Nickal as the Outstanding Wrestler.

Interviewing him.

Says it was a lot of fun. He's been using that move since he was little, and knew he had it.

Happy that he won, but it doesn't really matter until you get to NCAAs.

NCAA experience from last year is something he thinks about a lot

Not too happy with 197 as much as I like the kid...I'm doubtful he will AA....absolutely no offense. Not interested in any offense, just killing time with tie ups and half assed shots on the few that are taken.

Glad for the win, but just feel uneasy after Zain and Hall. I know both will be fine. Bummed that Stoll couldn't go.

Ironhead:

PSU wins 25th consecutive dual.

You walk into CHA and win 7 of 10, that's impressive.

Ernie Lucas Award Winner is Bo Nickal.

Interview Coach Cunningham:

- Iowa has a good team. I don't think we wrestled our best, but good crowd, we won 7 matches.

Talk about Mark Hall

- it's his 1st match
- he's going to get better
- he can wrestle with the best guys in the country

Talk about Nick Suriano

- a good match for him
- there was a lot to learn from it
- lot of little things
- made adjustments as match went on

George Carpenter

- fights hard
- that's what we expect

Significance of Gulibon's 3rd period

- everyone knows how good he is
- he's in great shape, super fast, super strong
- he can do that the entire match
- way to fight back
- changed the dual

Zain didn't look like himself

- he was a little off out there
- he's one of the toughest kids I've ever been around

Nolf close to getting a major, talk about him

- all over him
- all over his legs
- have to figure out how to get angles and arms
- he did in the 2nd half

Joseph came out like a ball of fire, what happened

- opponent has good hips
- Joseph kept trying to shoot threw them
- lots of things to take from this
- can go back and work on a lot of things

Bo Nickal -- Ironhead thought he was about to get pinned

- he goes after it, and it's fun
- you just don't know what he's going to do
- he's dangerous
- he's got tricks
- super tough kid
- fun to watch

Cutch, found a way to win

- he kept grinding
- got taken down late
- they wrestled 10-11 min
- he figured out how to get his hand raised
- now we get to work on things

Nevills, not being satisfied

- stinks for Stoll getting hurt
- slow initial periods
- new he wanted the tech, and kept going for it
- we expected him to get it against that guy, and happy he did

Talk about training this week after win

- we head home tomorrow
- we're in the grind, with 2 matches next weekend
- lot of things to take from this match to work on

Really surprised that Hall lost the match by being out-wrestled in neutral given his dominating Free career - especially given Myers ranking. Just did not look dominating on his feet at all and then gave up the deciding TD at the very end.

I think people are blowing things out of proportion. He lost in his first match at Iowa to a guy that is a returning All American. I'm sure he will be fine and that he needs to work on his conditioning as he was expecting to redshirt.

Don't think it was conditioning...he looked fine at the Scuffle. We had the same discussion about Kemerer after barely winning against Iowa State. Think he just had an adrenaline dump although one would think he has been in a ton of big matches and big time atmospheres in his career.

Just too many opportunities missed, Bo planting Sammy, and no Stoll hurt. Still, liked our effort overall...especially Sorensen and Meyer....two guys who have taken a lot of sh*t on both boards...especially Sorensen on this one.. Had a mental lapse and let Zain get in on his legs after a takedown or else he had a good shot of winning it. Still better than all the majors, TFs, and pins that were predicted.

I'm not rooting against our own wrestlers at all. I love Hall, I was cheering him on as he went through the MSU Open and the Scuffle. He needed time, he needed the RS.

I'm laughing at guys like you who thought pulling his shirt was automatically the answer to a national title.
He will be fine. He will AA...You could tell he was very nervous his first match in that atmosphere...Same with Nick S.....Our best line up is with Hall and Cassar in it.....Hall beat Geno by major this week in wrestle off,,,,He needed a match like that one....He will be better from it..That guy was an AA and Mark will never lose to him again....

my take: Hall looked good when he shot. Meyer is long, and he was frequently tying up Hall's wrist and controlling it. I was surprised that Hall did not make more of an effort to clear the wrist, as Meyer used it well to keep Hall from shooting. He'll learn from that.

I did not predict a tech fall OR a major. Knew it would be close. They'll wrestle again, maybe twice more. Ongoing. The myopia on here was fascinating. Thought we did not wrestle our best, but it's Carver Hawkeye and that is how it goes there.

Tanmen next....

Here is the first, correct analysis I have heard yet on the situation. Well done.

Mark is only a Freshman. It was his first match in a dual meet at Penn State. It was against an AA SENIOR with experience. Hall will get better as he developes. The most important point is he was wrestling in one of the best wrestling venues in college wrestling and wrestled there as his first match in college. Hall can learn from this and learn to wrestle for all 7 min. Seemed like on that last takedown he stopped wrestling for a split second and it cost him. He is going to be special. Just takes a couple matches to get into the grove. Seeing these guys develope over the years they are at PSU is something I enjoy watching. Let's go Penn State! Learning experience for 125 and 174 pound wrestlers! Also nice to see Zain in a close match and have him pull it out. That match will pay dividends later on!

I give Iowa credit. They wrestled their best but still got thumped in the final score. Sorensen with the match of his life and I don't think you'll ever see Alex Meyer beat Mark Hall again. Those were your bright spots.

All in all that was a very entertaining dual! The Stoll news had me bummed out, but I thoroughly enjoyed the dual, even in a losing performance.

Crazy match... nothing seemed to go as planned. Didn't wrestle their best yet pull out an impressive win. Speculating on the PSU feed that Zain was not himself and maybe wrestled sick?

I think Zain was a little off, but I also think Sorenson wrestled the best match of his career. By far.

Not quite correct. Beyers said a couple of times while interviewing Coach Casey that Zain didn't look like himself out there. Coach did not go with that. See my earlier post where I summarized Coach Casey's responses on Zain.

I know one thing for sure. In march of 2021 we won't have his 25 points going for us at nationals. I'm all in for Mark Hall now but I'd rather have him four FULL years starting next November.
LMAO, you sound like Neil Huntington and the Pirates, planning for 5 years down the line instead of living in the present.

Cael pulled the shirt. Handle it.
