PSU - Nebraska Dual Official Thread

I'm going to write this and the Wisconsin dual off by saying they're "training through" this part of the season. At least I hope that's what it is because these efforts have been pretty underwhelming given this team's expectations.
Nebraska is a tough team with a lot of highly ranked and talented kids.I think we have become a little spoiled expecting our guys to bonus everyone. PS did what it needed to do to beat some good kids.

You post on PSU forums more than I do.

And I have two degrees from PSU + sports season tickets.
I enjoy the interaction. But you are a little ahead of me. 2133 posts in 12 years averages about 178/yr and I’m at 321 in 2 years, 160/yr.

Lee has had a bit of trouble finishing the last few matches. If he finishes cleanly, the last 2 matches are not even close.
Suspect what's going on is that Lee, like water, is in the process of seeking his own [true] level while going against competition drawn from the toughest wrestling conference in the nation. Heading into the conference schedule ranked #4 was, I suspect, a little bit too high for him -- at least given the strength of competition he'd faced to that particular point in time. Maybe the halo effect of being a starter for the consensus #1 team in the country.

It'll be interesting to see where he goes from here.

I can give you that. But Cenzo didn’t do a lot on top in the 2nd. Be honest, if Evan Wick rode Cenzo for a period like that you would want stalling called.

White had his head on the mat for a majority of the period and Cenzo isn't even known for being a tough rider. I was surprised that he couldn't get an escape.

True, OTOH, if the Hawkeyes are okay with being number 3, that says a lot right there.
I didn’t say it was ok, I just don’t believe it means the program is in a sad state. That would mean every other program at Penn St is in a sad state. Would you agree with that?

RBY was sick during the scuffle. I did not think RBY look that great today

Tough crowd! RBY had 8 or 9 takedowns and something like 3 minutes of riding time.

As for the rest:

125: Schnupp performed admirably, holding it to a regular decision.
133: Covered above.
141: Red’s an All-American who beat Lee the last time they wrestled.
149: Berge beat a guy who beat the guy from Wiscy who defeated Berge last week. (More proof the transitive property doesn’t work in wrestling.)
157: Nolf easily beat the #2 ranked wrestler.
165: White’s #6 and has always wrestled Cenzo tough.
174: Labriola’s #9 and wrestled well. Credit to him.
184: Manville gave up ~ 20 lbs. and still gave Venz a tough match.
197: Schultz is #12. Bo was lining up some big moves and wasthisclose to hitting them. Credit to Schultz.
285: Cassar handily beat Jensen, who is #15.

If Rasheed wrestles, PSU probably takes 9 of 10 matches. All in all, a damn good day!

Today's referee's skill ser has been overwhelmed by the level of wrestling. Without sugar coating it, he sucks.

Standing behind Hall he calls locked hands and then with the video replay he tells Cael I can't see if they were locked or not.

actually I believe the other ref signalled locked hands

Parrish for Neb ranked #179 and I think his red shirt was just pulled. Like I said, RBY did not impress me that much. Good win just like rest of PSU guys. Neb tough.

Berger's ankle grabs to "stall-mates" are annoying. Nolf does the work and then Berger goes for a stall-mate or a potentially dangerous hold. At best, it's a failed attempt at "funking". Hope Nolf bonuses him next time.

White is good, but he wasn't close to scoring on VJ. He didn't even attempt. The gap is getting bigger.
Did you just say the gap is getting bigger on a 2-0 decision with zero takedowns the entire match from either guy?? Wouldn’t the fact that White kept Cenzo from taking him down once made the gap tighten, not widen? If White escapes within the 1 min it’s a 1-1 match headed to OT. I’d say he tightened the gap and he’s the only wrestler I’ve seen who gives Cenzo trouble on offense.

The last time they wrestled VJ won in the second SV. Progress with 2-0 win in regulation.

Did you see their history?

“First match: White by tech
Second match: White in OT
Third match: Cenzo in OT
Fourth match: Cenzo 2-0ina match where he was never threatened”

Courtesy of Cholley Valentine

Yep. Widening the gap.

Our backup 165 goes up two weights and gives Venz a tough match.
The way Nolf was playing around, smiling before Bo's match, he is not hurt. Loose, smiling and having FUN.
Nolf kind of winces a little bit on the rare occasions he's sucking air. I honestly think he doesn't like to show any sign of weakness. He kind of does a ventriloquist thing while sucking a little air. Can't recall ever seeing him gaping for air.

Are you guys pausing in the app or at GoPSU.com? I can’t seem to get the app to pause.
BTNplus/BTN2go (and I assume Flo) are usually behind the audio (they have a longer broadcast delay). So you have to pause the audio at gopsusports.com (which is really WRSC 1390). And, like several others have posted you should do this is small increments 5-10s at a time -- so you don't go too far.

How long did Nolf hold Berger in the air in the first period with a single leg? He likes to do that with guys but this time it lasted even longer than usual.

George Castanza's father on Seinfeld would be impressed with such Festivus feats of strength.

RBY dominates and wins 20-7 and you don’t think he wrestled all that well? I thought he showed aggressiveness and looked good.

I don’t enjoy you.

You’re annoying AF.
Is this better.

125 Schnupp is a hard worker and getting better. Love the fight!
133 RBY has the quickness and skill to compete with anyone. Could be Top 4 at nationals.
141 Lee has the motor to compete with most at this weight. Potential top 4 at nationals
149 Berge needs to open up the offense, has the skill to AA.
157 Nolf is one of the best of all time. Will be a 3 timer in March.
165 Joseph is at his best in March. Will be tough to stop.
174 Hall on a collision course with Zahid. Could win his 2nd title
184 Rasheed is very slick. If he puts it all together should be wrestling Martin on Saturday night (assuming seeds work out)
197 Nickal is outstanding. One of the most complete wrestlers of his era. Another 3 timer come March
285 Cassar has the strength and quickness to compete with anyone. Should be top 4.

Obviously I don’t want these outcomes but they are all very possible. Penn St should cruise to another national title barring any unforeseen circumstances.

The transfer portal remains open.

or

You could take a page from Jammenz and root for two teams.

Everytime there is a shot of the coaches in the corner Varner just looks like some guy that got to sit in the corner with the coaches rather than a coach. Not saying that has anything to do with his coaching abilities. Just the body language of hands in his pockets just kind of hanging out as the coaches speak with the wrestlers
you could say the same thing about Cael... half the time he looks bored. Leaning back, hands in lap, stoic. I honestly wonder whether he would prefer to be at practice vs at a match, especially when the duel opponent is overmatched.

when was the last time PSU wrestled a dual with no back points?
In my experience hitting pause on the BTN+ stream does what you said. However, hitting pause on the LionVision Audio with Byers does work, although I generally have to hit pause several times until I get them synced up.

For me if listening to Lionvision by android cell phone pause only works if you go to the three dots in the upper RH corner and select desktop site

That was the problem for White if he wanted a stalling call. He never generated anything underneath. He might have gotten to a tripod once.

Coaches that are constantly instructing are doing it for their own benefit. And if you are constantly yelling stuff, it tends to get tuned out. The B1G broadcast on Friday had the Rutgers staff mic'd up. Truly amazing stuff coming out of there like "hustle". If I'm wrestling and the best a coach can offer is "hustle", I'm not making any effort to hear them. Quite the opposite.

Imo, you don't want wrestlers overthinking. If they are listening for coaches instructions while wrestling, it is hurting their performance. So I like the way PSU coaches.

"Ranked #179" didn't raise any flags about the ranking? This is conclusion first, stats later.

PS, Mark Hall's shirt was pulled 2 years ago today.
