PSU - Rutgers Dual Thread

Give me a break. We’re all hopefully real and true fans. We praise them when they do great and also need to be honest when they look average. I was hoping after the Nolf injury we’d see some pissed off wrestlers. Nope. We settled for a couple one point wins over good but not great opponents and majored a couple backups
My hunch is that the team has been pushed very hard the last few weeks because the teams on the schedule allowed it. Gets them use to wrestling tired which is critical for NCAA's. Also, this was a huge emotional match for Rutgers.

Yeah... you’re right. These guys have such a history of settling for 1 point wins that I’m sure that was the game plan today.

You can give your opinion and I can give mine. You want to paint it as a solid performance. I don’t.

Moving the goal posts. Had you just said that I wouldn’t have commented.

To say we were out-hustled and didn’t match their intensity when we won 7 of 9 is just not accurate.

Yes It wasn’t the best this team has wrestled ... that being said. No injury to Nolf and we win 29-9 (at least ) & suddenly it doesn’t look so bad

I'd say the entire team wrestled well, with the exception of Keener and Nickal. Expect a little more from them, but it happens,
Really the only disappointing performance was Bo, the rest of the team was fine.

His Twitter handle is DMT1960.
David Magicman Taylor and even lists his career number of losses to Dake at the end. It's him.

It’s not David Taylor, PSU wrestler

And I didn’t know then but I now know - it is his father.

Just home from the dual. Some of what happened today will be handled appropriately. Really saddened by the injury to Jason. Time will tell how it plays out...

So what the heck does that statement mean?

And, yeah, we're all sick about the injury to Nolf.

Wanted to stop by and say how much it sucks that Nolf got hurt. Hopefully, it is not a tear. I don't think it was intentional but these kids put themselves in such bad positions. Kemerer bends that leg as well when guys are on low on a single. At our meet against tOSU, so many of our knees were getting cranked and in bad positions and the ref doesn't blow the whistle. My Dad watched the Minne meet and asked who the hell is the whirling dervish kid for Penn State who was so quick the other guy didn't know what the f*ck hit him. Automatically, I know he's talking about Nolf.

Nice post chief.

Any possibility Sandy could call either Harbaugh or Urban and have them complain on behalf of us. It would mean something then.

Jersey toughness sucks. When u can't win.....get dirty. F**k the dirty wrestlers. There is not.a.place in sports when you are down, and decide to hurt
persons intentionally
Why don’t you stop bein a baby ..we all no Jason gets in funk positions all the time ..why label, the opponent with something he doesn’t deserve ..yea the Deluca kid got out of hand but that doesn’t make the whole team dirty . The ref was incompetent as was plainly seen ..all day actually ...this trashing the opponents for an injury that was merely wrestling makes you look like an idiot homer ...did you notice Van Brill standing there kinda shocked by it all .he certainly didn’t revel in the situation at all and for you and others to label the kid dirty just ain’t right .grow up guys ...there was nothing dirty about it at all

watched the replay of the knee injury about ten times. I doubt it was a patella dislocation. The knee was too far flexed and his tibia appeared to move in a rotational fashion. Not much valgus or varus stress (no sideways bending). If I had to bet my lunch money, I would guess meniscus injury rather than ligamentous injury. Possibly just a painful snap of the tendon that was alluded to by Askren, but based on the motion I don't think so

But why the visible “pop” if just meniscus?

We came out flat.

I was at both matches this weekend and tend to agree with this assessment. I thought today was the most flat performance since Cael took over. I can't agree about Friday. I thought the team was fine Friday.

But no doubt the Friday home/Sunday away schedule (especially when Rutgers did not wrestle this weekend until today) had some effect.

They did win both matches and nobody wrestled looking tired, but they were sluggish and lacking their quickness.

That's what I'm calling flat. But to be fair, Penn State won the takedown battle about 30-4 if you take Suriano out of the equation and without the injury would have won 8 matches in the dual and walked away with something like a 30-9 victory, so I don't overreact to one flat performance. Most teams would kill to have a flat performance like that.

In layman's terms Doc, or plumber or whatever your walk of life is?

Honest yes, hyperbolic no.

Penn State has reached the point where these teams circle a home dual against them as their super bowl. We saw it against Michigan and now again against Rutgers. Guess we just have to get use to getting other teams "A" game on the road.

In regard to Nolf, I tend to agree that Jason puts himself in some rather awkward positions so there was always the potential for an injury like this. Do wish the ref called PD easier, but I don't blame him or the Rutgers wrestler.

Deluca was the real thug in all this. Think the ref handled it properly other then starting to issue penalty points a little later then he should have. Rutgers coaching staff should be embarrassed by that performance.

There is no replacing Nolf at 157 so pulling guys out of redshirt or juggling the lineup won't close the gap with tOSU. Injury looked bad but there seems to be at least some hope it's not as bad as it appeared. Next few weeks of injury speculation may be intolerable.

While I agree we don't pull a shirt just for this dual, I highly doubt CP knows what Nolfs status is. I would think Nolf would be getting an MRI at some point today.
He could have had it yesterday. Speculation is a dislocated knee cap, if true, he could have been examined in New Jersey yesterday.

CP says he's coming back. That's the plan, anyways.

Agree that PSU is not gonna burn a redshirt for a few dual meets. But that doesn't mean that Nolf is going to make it back, either. Further, I highly doubt that Pyles knows any more about Nolf's injury status than we do.

So, all in all, an odd and pretty meaningless tweet from Pyles IMO.

From your mouth to God's ears. Meniscus tears or damage can be fairly easily repaired I think and the rehab is insignificant.

Nolf getting hurt sucks. I watch/care about wrestling way too much. I woke up this morning still extremely bothered by it, and frankly it really dampens my interest in the entire NCAA tournament if it is Nolfless. I don't think I'm alone in counting the days/hours between Nolf matches. I will simply wait for news and pray for his health. I thought Mark Hall wrestled like a man possessed, so that doesn't fit the flat narrative very well. Cenzo did look a little bit flat and so did Bo, but how could an injury to a best buddy who you know does everything the right way not slow your adrenaline just a tad bit. I am much more worried about this for Jason himself and my selfish desire to watch him compete than a team standpoint. I hate Rutgers.

  • I could not re-watch the match last night was emotionally drained. Live I thought several RU wrestlers were palming face and nose the entire match and of course DeLuca was the worst of the bunch. From our position it seemed as if the 184 was leading with his head into Bo's face, I need to watch it again when I get a chance. As far as lack of intensity after watching Zain's Boxing match and Nolf's injury are you kidding me. That is an extremely emotional experience and can be a drain on energy. Relax, the team will be fine and the sun came up today, I checked.

completely crazy thought but.....if the good Lord wills it....Nolf all bandaged up, hobbling on one leg, still MD MJo and the streak survives.....

where at wREC Hall do we build the statue?

The dual streak is a nice soundbyte to have fumble out of TJ's mouth during a telecast, but I think this team has bigger fish to fry. I wouldn't mind losing the battle to win the war, if you nah what i'm sayen

Oh, I don't know...Maybe it's because we had JUST WATCHED Zain Retherford treated like a punching bag, instead of a wrestling competitor?

And Zain was far from the only one. The kids at 174 and 184, I don't know who because in true Brad Pitt fashion, I have not remembered their names, but they were taking some heavy swats as well. Not quite to the degree of the kid at 149, but pretty close.

This. We were all frustrated and angry right along with Zain, because he didn't get a chance to give him the Amine treatment. So, we comfort ourselves, knowing Nolf is up next. Then. Disaster. It's natural to be so pissed off, even if Van Brill wrestled clean. Natural for the coaches to yell at the ref too. Heck, they might even have done it intentionally to release some of the steam on the bench and keep the team focused on wrestling.

RU & NJ, with their emotive, romantic Italian roots (and a "never New York" inferiority complex) is such a classic foil for PA's Germans and Scotch-Irish, where work ethic and team-over-self ethos tends to dominate. We'll never like each other. If only they were more competitive in athletics, it would be a great rivalry....
