journey sucks?
Indeed, they do. One of the bands that can send me into an instant bad mood (Styx, Phil Collins/Genesis, REO Speedwagon) when they pop onto the radio.
Again, all personal preference.
journey sucks?
What's that all about? Just askingI'm hopeful that The J Geils Band get in. Even better would be seeing them accept their awards without someone getting killed given the animosity of the band towards J. Geils. No way they would play together either.
true. all subjective. but can you see why they would get in? ironically i like all the bands you mentioned. so many great pop hits. what kind of bands do you like?Indeed, they do. pretty eclectic mix. i like all those groups somewhat. of course bruce is amazing. do you like Wilco, Replacements,Paul Westerberg as much as springsteen or steely dan. I have smaller personal favorites like the zombies but I just dont even put them in the class of top groups like zeppelin, the beatles, the stones, the doors, queen, who, eagles, areosmith, u2, police, rush, van halen, kinks, maiden, def leopard, billy joel, elton, bon jovi, scorpions, foreignor, bowie, bee gees, fleetwood mac, madoona, michael jackson, meatloaf, genesis/phil collins, motley crue, john cougar mellamcamp, ozzie, rod stewart, marley, sting, petty, hall oates, pat benatar, lennon, mcartney and wings, coldplay, pink floyd, rem, chili peppers, cars, journey, etc. I probably missed quite a few more.Absolutely, I can see why they would get in. Lots of hits amongst the group. I am pretty much a rock guy, though I can make forays into other genres. i would say my main listening would be amongst a group that includes Springsteen, Wilco, Replacements/Paul Westerberg, Steely Dan, Clash, Pearl Jam.
I don't like pink floyd too much. But they should certainly be in the hall of fame. Which they are. Even though I say I dont like them, I still own dark side of the moon and the wall. but I just find their music a little boring and depressing.I have Springsteen kind of in a different class. The others I listen to pretty equally. Steely Dan is a typical Sunday morning listen (sometimes combined with Sinatra and/or Bing Crosby). Replacements/Westerberg and Wilco can get a listen at any time. Both have pretty eclectic sounds within their own music. Pearl Jam kind of depends on the mood. I will often listen to Rage Against the Machine when I need an energy boost. Beastie Boys are kind of in that mode as well. One band that I didn't list that I absolutely love is Pink Floyd. Problem for me with them is that they are not a quick listen for me. Either I am listening to an entire album or not at all and the hecticness of my life doesn't lend itself to that kind of musical time commitment.
two days left to vote.
interestingly, while the vote totals change each day, the standings in the voting have stayed the same since my post on Dec. 6, which listed the standings at that time.
my choices are doing well. cars, journey, elo p jam.Only two of my choices are in the top five.
my choices are doing well. cars, journey, elo p jam.
True. Some choices are put in because they were influential. YES only had like 5 decent hits, but they are considered a top progressive band like deep purple, rush, king crimson, the original line up of genesis etc. I just dont think they wrote many great songs/melodies. Some people say joan baez supposedly had a major folk influence, zombies-60's personified, depeche mode-electronic etc. But to me if you you dont have tons of great songs(whether they are hits or not) you should not be in. Iron maiden should be in and they had like 2 radio hits in total probably. I would put ICE-T in too. And many more.ELO, Cars, Yes, Pearl Jam. Never heard of 90% of the rest. Joan Baez are you kidding . . .
RRHOF an utter joke until they put Rush in. Like Journey, but not this year.
Agree on depech mode. Very influential. I think it is about music first and foremost. And Jane's addiction just does not have that many great songs. They are not an iconic band. I would probably put tool in before them. Perry Ferrell should be in the business of rock and roll hall of fame, but not the rock and roll hall of fame. He could be in there with people like david geffen or something. I like jane's addiction. But I do think bands needs to be incredibly popular with millions of fans for a long time and or sell tons of records. So a band like the cars deserves to get in. But a band like iron maiden should get in too as they have millions of fans, have been around since the 70's, still sell out shows worldwide and were a major influence on the new wave of British heavy metal. As far as music and as a band goes I don't janes addiction has accomplished either of those two things. In terms of shaping and informing contemporary rock, Depeche Mode and Jane's Addiction are two hugely important bands. If nothing else, Perry Ferrell's creation of Lollapalooza (and the rebirth of the 'music festival'), and the promotion/inclusion of relatively unknown bands at the beginning of their careers (Tool, NIN, Ministry, RATM, STP, etc.) alone should cement his inclusion.

I agree. Just don't think they were that popular for that long. So I use use radio play, total record sales and or long term length and popularity of the band. Even if a band does not get great radio play they can still sell a lot of records. Certain Hip hop groups like ice t, public enemy, nwa, as well as groups like iron maiden have proved that. JA only had 4 studio albums. Two went double platinum which is impressive. But hall of fame to me means longevity in putting out great music. It is like long term lifetime achievement award. You dont play four years in the nfl and get into the nfl hall of fame. I realize JA has split up and got together at various times. But they have not put out great new music over long period time. There is no exact minimum with any of this. It is all subjective. It is not an exact science.???
First, I think that 'great songs' as the ultimate prerequisite for the RRHOF is misguided (JA has a ton of 'great songs', just not a lot that were Top 40 hits). Jane's Addiction is a MASSIVE R&R/Alt music influence whose impact is still felt today. They may not have had a bunch of radio friendly songs (and neither does Ministry, Tool, and other important bands from the era), but 'Been Caught Stealing', 'Jane Says', 'Nothing's Shocking', 'Mountain Song', 'Stop!', and 'I Would For You' are iconic and still relevant today. You have to consider the quality and importance of work - radio friendly or not. Also consider the ridiculous talent of that band - original lineup was Dave Navarro, Perry Ferrell, Eric Avery, and drummer Stephen Perkins (who is a stand out in any era). Also consider their debut album, 'Jane's Addiction', was recorded LIVE in '87 for about $4,000.00. The cover of 'Sympathy for the Devil' is amazing. Their alt/grunge efforts pre-date nearly everyone else in the genre, including Pearl Jam by three years.

agree. but there kind of considered the founders of the grunge movement. and nevermind is a truly iconic record. just like ten by pearl jam. i put them and pearl jam in for reasons. it seems like journey, yes, pearl jam, the cars and elo are getting in this yr. at least by fan votes those are the top 5. i have no issue with that. i wonder if steve perry will get up and sing with journey? he wrote and helped produce a lot of their top songs. he has one of the greatest voices in the history of rock and roll. arnel pineda is a good singer, but he is just a gun for hire. as far as i am concerned pineda should not even be inducted. he had nothing to do with journey in the 70's and 80's. that is about schon and perry. It's certainly not exact - Nirvana had what, two studio albums? Guess we'll see.

And I love Journey, but some of their stuff is just crap - 'Oh Sherrie'? Barf. Great showcase for Perry's voice but a teen girl's diary entry in music form IMO.
oh sherry is a steve perry solo song. not a journey song. i cant stand perry farrel'sl voice. it flat out bad and relatively annoying, the voice is an instrument. and ten and nevermind are much bigger and more iconic records than ANYTHING jane's addiction ever did. and jane's addicrtion did not really start a particular movement like grunge. i do like jane's addiction. they do have some very good music. pixies, joy d and smiths will never happen. it is not just about influence. to me you should have to be larger than life to get in. those groups did not accomplish very much relative to the rest of the top groups of all time. but i would probably only induct a half or a third of who they have already innducted. how did these groups get in? bobby darrin, laverne baker, the impessions, jimmy reid, bobby blue bland, ruth brown, frankie lymon, little willie john, buffalo springfield, mamas and papas, del shannon, the moonglows, gene pitney, the dells, buddy guy, the ventures, little anthony, bobbby womack, the comets, the blue caps, the crickets, small faces, joan jett, bill withers, paul butterfield etc.Helps to have a commercially friendly music video by one of the biggest music video directors of the 90's ('Smells Like Teen Spirit', dir. Samuel Bayer) to help with promotion. Contrast with Jane's video for 'Mountain Song' which was rarely if ever played to support 'Nothing's Shocking' because it contained full frontal nudity. I love Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but Jane's is as important as either IMO (and RATM's Tom Morello said as much - below). And if and until The Pixies, The Smiths, and Joy Division are in, none of this really matters IMO.
And I love Journey, but some of their stuff is just crap - 'Oh Sherrie'? Barf. Great showcase for Perry's voice but a teen girl's diary entry in music form IMO.
According to Blabbermouth.net, The Pulse Of Radio reports: Although Nirvana is credited with being the first "alternative" band to break out into huge mainstream success, Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello has taken issue with that. Speaking at the induction of Jane's Addiction into the Guitar Center RockWalk in Hollywood last Wednesday (June 1), Morello argued, "Nirvana often gets credit for being the first 'alternative' band to break through, the band that changed music and led rock out of the hair metal wilderness of the '80s. That's just not true. It was Jane's Addiction: inspiring, intelligent, furiously rocking and artistically deep."
Jane's frontman Perry Farrell said after Morello's speech, "That speech made me sound so damn good, I don't need to look in the mirror ever again. Just play that over and over every morning."
Guitarist Dave Navarro added, "When I first heard we were going to be honored here at the RockWalk I thought of coming here 10-plus years ago to witness Jimmy Page's induction... now to be permanently embedded in cement beside one of my hugest influences is probably one of those dreams coming true that you didn't know you had."
Just a clarification -- Oh Sherrie was not a Journey song. Steve Perry wrote it (it's about his GF at the time, Sherrie) and it appeared on a solo album he released while Journey was taking a break.

yes popularity, bit not simply pop or mainstream rock artists. if a band just has small following then it means that a great deal of people do not really value their music. it is not the rock roll hall of of obscure bands that may have had some impact on the music industry, but don't rally have that many songs, records, fans or long term following. The rock and roll hall of fame is not supposed to be about little obscure bands that only appeal to small amount of people. Fame: the definition of the word means you that you are popular, well known. That a lot of people know you are are. Hall of fame means that are even more popular. The highest levels of fame. A popularity contest sounds so negative. But it is not. People universally love the beatles. Their music appeals to practically everyone. So that is part of the criteria. Making music that stands the test of time and is not forgotten. I think people will forget janes addiction easier or faster than they will pearl jam or nirvanaOkay, we can end here. You favor the 'grunge' bands with mainstream success - that's fine, but mistaken IMO. The whole RRHOF is a popularity contest anyway. If Kurt Cobain had a vote, Joy Division and The Pixies would be in; I trust his vote and musical authority over yours. Later.
bit oh sherry has nothing to do with journey getting in.Ah, ok. Still crap.
oh sherry is a steve perry solo song.

But I dont only care about pop hits and radio play. If band is great they will break through and sell records and tour with great success(the dead). Bands like iron maiden and some of the rap bands I talked about have done that.
But I understand that you want JA in. They are had a huge impact in your eyes. And so the discussion goes. Nothing personal. Just opinions.
I would not put all those bands in either. Some possibly. But they were somewhat influential. To me, not all of them are influential enough. Manet was very good painter, but not considered to be at the level of monet. I just think the hall should be more selective. And a few other musicians do not determine who gets in. It is much wider audience. I feel that is much more well rounded group. Jeff beck did influence a lot of guitarists because he is a very talented and a great musician, but has very few great songs as a solo artist. The issue is the criteria you're using isn't the same one the RRHOF uses. Otherwise, explain Cheap Trick, Cat Stevens, Frank Zappa, Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, Jeff Beck, and The Ramones - most of those are in because of their importance/influence and musical acumen; not because they sold a ton of records or lit up the charts (of course, some had one major hit and that helped, and some sold a lot of records).
And with or without the RRHOF, Jane's Addiction's legacy is solid. The words of peers such as Kurt Cobain, Billy Corgan, Trent Reznor, Tom Morello, etc. mean a lot more.
oh sheery will make it in before bad brains.Looking forward to Upperwestsidetrojan's head exploding when Bad Brains gets in. Haha.
Ah, ok. Still crap.

7. Steppenwolf
8. Tupac Shakur
The top 5 in the fan balloting are counted as 1 ballot, along with the ballots submitted by living members of the R&R HOF, critics, and historians.
Journey may be in a good spot, as they've been leading the fan voting for weeks, and currently have a nearly 4,000 vote lead. While the fan balloting only counts as 1 vote, the last 4 winners of the fan balloting have been inducted in the Hall.
Vote early, vote often.![]()
To me, the cars should be right there or right behind journey. So many great pop hits. Musically bands like yes and elo are better, but the cars are pop music perfection. I dont know how steppenwolf gets any votes. Born to be wild is great. But were they even influential at all?Last day to vote.

Can you agree though, that all of the above belong in this particular HOF over someone like Donna Summer or Chic?Indeed, they do. One of the bands that can send me into an instant bad mood (Styx, Phil Collins/Genesis, REO Speedwagon) when they pop onto the radio.
Again, all personal preference.
chic should never be in, but donna summer is the premier or founding meber of disco. she was absolutely huger and was the biggest disco act. once, she had like 5 good songs, but she did have a huge impact on that culture. chic had one good song. very little impact. i try to hide my personal tastes when analyzing this. for example, i dont like pink floyd to much , but they should be in. i dont love donna summer, but i think she should be in. i consider it really to be the popular music hall of fame. so i have no problem with any rock and roll or popular act getting in. so i think it should include groups like public enemy, madonna, phil collins, iron maiden etc. anyone who did something huge in pop or rock. Can you agree though, that all of the above belong in this particular HOF over someone like Donna Summer or Chic?
