The Ferrari Family Circus

An apology seems to imply he's still in.

I am choosing to flip from outrage to enjoyment. Let the shit show continue. The next several years are going to be like smoking in a dynamite factory. Sooner or later a dumb ass is going to toss a half lit match and miss the toilet.

Several years of Iowa fans on edge never knowing when, but silently acknowledging disaster is inevitable.

Can the Brands maintain control with three kids poisoning the room, and the old man and uncle Carmine breathing down their necks? I don't know that I would wish that on my worst enemy.

Team chemistry and loyalty in the age of the transfer portal should prove quite interesting as well.

A dose of reality, the biggest problem I have is it will more likely be an off mat scandal involving fast girls, fast cars, fist fighting, fast drinking, foolish social media, hopeful no gun accidents, and other untaudry behaviors done to excess that will embarrass the university and might cost the Brands their jobs. I just hope no innocent bystanders are taken out with them.
I am betting they shoot their mouths off to the other wrestler's on the team that's the problem they think they are better than everyone else!

The more I think about this, the more TNT screws up this situation will long term hurt PSU more than Iowa. If TNT do the wrong thing and allow AJ to continue, it will inevitably end bad. TNT lose their jobs. Iowa is a good job/wrestling destination. Iowa ends up with a real coach, real coach turns Iowa into actual contender (more than 1 title a decade).

Not going to happen, Iowa along with the rest are basically now second tier. It's going to take a lot to challenge PSU more than once or twice in a decade with what Sanderson has built. It's goes far beyond the NCAA torunament.

But on the plus side, perhaps the focus would go back to the wrestling and not on the TnT Clown Show.

That’s why I would rather have the devil I know as compared to Burrough, Taylor, Askren or someone like that who big Bob might throw big Bob money at once TNT are fired. They might make more of a difference, maybe not (to your point), but I know what I have with TNT (and we know that’s not good enough)

Brands is under contract thru the 2029 season. He's not going anywhere.

I really don't see Iowa branching out of the Iowa tree if they replaced TnT so none of those names are a serious possibility, imo. Then the question is who do they get? Spencer Lee? Man has zero coaching experience, so he's a few years away from a head position. I think Iowa is going down with the TnT ship.

come on ElJefe, coaches under contract are fired every day. in fact, that is usually what happen. I am talking about brands allowing the crazy and therefore embarrassing the university. Jimbo fisher was fired with a bazillion dollars owed on a contract. There is nothing to say if the new AD started to clip their wings a little they don’t become the clown show

Once the Brands boys are gone, there will be pressure for the next coach to have ties to Iowa. Good luck finding someone with ties to Iowa that understand how to run a modern wrestling program.

Let's just hope a ~$1 mil/yr carrot doesn't attract DT. This may be his last Olympic cycle and the Ferrari fuse could last a year or two. TnT are signed through 2029 so it will take a scandal to take them out. I know David would prefer to follow Cael but serious money talks. Hopefully they look to Spencer for the next phase, but I could see Askren go for it.

I get your overall point, but comparing the financial resources of Texas A&M football (and their boosters) to a college wrestling program is an enormous stretch.

Kem would be a great coach but I hope he has enough sense to never return to the cesspool.
He just got out of prison. Now he’s gonna break in?

I can see Alex Marinelli taking over when Brands retires. If he does, he needs to clean house and bring in an entirely new staff.

LOL. If the University of Iowa were going to fire Brands for embarrassing the school, they would've forced him to remove associate head coach Terry years ago.

The next coach of any college sport who gets fired for an athlete giving fans the middle finger, will be the first. Ferrari would literally have to murder people for it to reach Brands.

Rumors that some recruits may be looking around after that debacle
Not surprising. Since they started flirting with the circus, they’ve already lost Jesuroga and Chittum, the latter directly because of the circus. Gabe seems to have chosen to assimilate into the circus, though. We’ll see if Kueter chooses to wrestle at all now.

I know that the Iowa job would be a coveted spot, but I doubt very much any of the 3 you mentioned would be interested.

If Iowa somehow fired Brands, their #1 target would likely be Dresser.

He checks all the boxes: Iowa native, Iowa alum, Gable wrestler, experienced D1 head coach, built winners at 2 different schools, great nationwide recruiter, tough no-nonsense guy.

The only downside is his age -- he's 61 -- but that would be an opportunity to install the next coach on his staff.

I don't see any of these guys competing with Cael. The OP theorized that it would hurt PSU's dominance if TnT were shown the door... - don't see it honestly. (Spencer Lee or Alex Marinelli are not going to be a huge recruiting threat to Cael).

I thought the whole "Marinelli in AJ's corner" was a chance for him to coach. Of course it might have been better if he started with a more mentally stable individual.

Agreed, overall point is coaches are hired to be fired and colleges absorb the extra money all the time.

Hate to say it, but Tan Tom would also be a Candidate imho. He checks all the boxes and his recruiting ties to OH would be huge.

There was I guy I trust that wrote that Kem couldn't get away from Iowa fast enough after his career was done.

I know the guy posts here, so I will leave it up to him to verify.
He’s probably wrestling his naked uncle in the basement.

Competing with Cael isn’t even relevant. Nobody is going to compete with Cael, at least not consistently in the next decade. The reality is Iowa needs to worry about staying in front of teams like Michigan and Ohio State if they want to stay relevant. Tom Brands’ success is based on the rich tradition Dan Gable built 30-40 years ago. Recruits aren’t going to flock to Iowa City “because my grandfather liked them”. He’s way behind the times and he’s too lazy to get out and recruit today’s top level athletes. This isn’t a winning formula.
