Rutgers dual thread - Jan 24

I don't recall an evening when the ref had to warn against fingers so often. Is that a stalling technique Goodall teaches?

Also, the ref kept telling the wrestlers to work to score while it was obvious Rutgers was doing everything but. I have no problem with the stall calls on top wrestlers, but where were the stall calls from neutral?

I can count the number of committed shots from Rutgers on one hand.

Tim Johnson, is that you?
lol maybe. Am I hoping Luke wins the natty this year? 100%

But as the #1 overall recruit coming in he hasn't taken a committed shot in his last 14 minutes of mat time. Of course it can change.

No, it was 16-4, escape made it 16-5, immediated TD made it 19-5. They put the TD on the score before they put the escape on the score.

Scoring progression was:
1-0, 4-0, 4-1, 7-1, 7-2, 10-2, 10-3, 13-3, 13-4, 16-4, 16-5, 19-5, 19-6, 22-6
Ah, that explains it. I was confused when the score on TV read 19-4 and the bout continued.

LL - looks like he has been spending all little too much time in the Beau Bartlett school of offense. Going into the second half of the third period anything can happen - no bueno in terms of a strategy. Having said that let's give the kid a break, he is a true freshman for crying out loud. You don't win world medals without an A+ neutral offense. It will come. By this March? Maybe, but it will come and he will be dominant.

Braeden - he rode him out but it was a struggle, and oddly enough he doesn't use the ankle trap. I don't get it. Nearly all or guys master that technique early. He can probably beat anyone at the weight but also lose to anyone in the top 10. To be honest, I see much the same guy as last year which is pretty damned good, but nearly impossible to predict the outcome vs strong competition.

Beau - he spends the most time of our guys in the BB school of offense. :) This match was decent but you can definitely see a significant tactical change when wrestling to 10 guys vs 11 and below. As a contrast MM wrestles the same against everyone. Beau has the skills to wrestle more like MM if he wanted to. I think Mendez is jumping levels and Beau is still Beau. Can he do it? Sure. Is he letting it fly in his swan song season? Nope.

Pretty much veryone else? Wow.

I'd imagine LL, Davis, and Beau drill together a fair amount. Are they possibly reinforcing a certain style (counter-wrestling) rather than pushing each other to take risks?

I was able to find footage of the scoreboard as it was happening.

Anybody able to make out what the official said to Barr in the center of the mat as they waiting for Poz to crawl back to center for the restart near the end of the mauling?

Maybe something like, “Better wrap this up quick, the stretcher is on the way.”

Or, “Show some mercy, his parents are in the stands.”

I thought he was telling Barr that he had to be sure to let Pos clear himself before the escape would be awarded. But obviously I don't know for sure.

Shocking performance by Luke. Could not get thru Peterson's head hand defense. Didn't get to legs once? Vs a non AA? Wow. Lack of fight with :17 left on the restart is also alarming. Does our non AA at 125 continue this year?
Shocking? Have you seen any other LL matches this season?

The LL-Peterson bout was very similar to LL's previous matches against Seymour (Lehigh) and Smith (Nebraska), though in those two LL got a late counter-TD to win. But in all three of those matches, LL couldn't get through the heads/hands defense of the opponent, who were all older and probably stronger guys. Something he needs to improve on, but let's recall that LL is a true freshman. Further, Peterson has some good wins and is better than his #19 ranking IMO..

The remark (and your "alarm") about lack of fight doesn't merit a response.

Great night! Just got home. Had seats 3 rows behind scorer table right next to RU bench.

Takeaways..Rizzler a big hit (I never heard of him before tonight)

No injuries so my curse is broken.

Just read thru comments. Everyone kind of spot on..only headscratcher to me was Kerks match. Neither guy did nothing, very strange match from him.

If you can see the look on Poz face after that match as he headed toward tunnel..as other have said, Barr absolutely broke him.

Peterson smiling ear to ear the whole match. At least one RU guy went home happy. Only RU guy that impressed me tonight was Turley. I would have bet anything on bonus points there.

Great crowd, RU fans electric after Peterson win, got quiet after Shawver and rest of night.
Regarding Kerk with a performance like that Gable will manhandle him. 3rd period no energy and basically hung on to win with hand fighting. RU too small to take shots against his defense but Kerk not impressive other than an escape point

Turley hanging in there. Great recovery from Haines off that roll.

I dont know that I've ever seen 22 points in less than a period. That was insane. And at 197 no less. Wow.
Cash registered! I wonder if anyone keeps statistics on fastest repetitive takedowns (minimum 6). Certainly Jason used to make the register ring like a fire alarm, but, I’m not sure I’ve seen a more aggressive series than what Josh did last night.
PS: I really liked Poz when he was a freshman and thought that he might become a contenda. No. NO! He’s done!

Wasn't Kerk really sick a few years ago to the point where he almost didn't come back?

He absolutely looks more lethargic the past 2 matches and down nearly 10 lbs is no joke. Like always we will never hear the details of anything medical, but something about GK right now doesn't pass the smell test.

Hopefully it's not something like mono that can linger, but IMO we are not seeing anywhere close to a 100% Kerk right now.

Zero doubt he needs those good 10 lbs back when he meets Gable at bigs.

Apparently, this is the first time Poznanski has been tech'd in college. He only had three previous loses by bonus before the Barr match & all were by major. One of the people who majored him is well-known around here. The master teaching the student?

Poznanski's previous bonus loses:
3/6/21: Aaron Brooks MD Poznanski 10-2
1/16/22: Aaron Brooks MD Poznanski 10-2
3/21/24: Tanner Sloan MD Poznanski 14-4

I see that several board mates predicted the TF for Barr for KYPSW, including @Eastern HWT.

I swear, if Eastern HWT gets another perfect score this week I’m gonna throw in the towel like Poz.

Kerk scores a lot on the mat and I noticed their heavy was like **** that let's go neutral. Kerk was fine he's getting over something. He wrestles a match like that against gable he will probably be favored to win

Came across the PSU/Rutgers article recapping the match. Found this tidbit fascinating...
"We probably underestimated them a little bit on the mat,'' Goodale said. "They were really good on top. We struggled on the mat.''

How is it possible to underestimate PSU?

That does not see to be a good strategy in recruiting, when you state out loud that you "underestimated".

No offense to him, but pretty much everything I see him say reinforces the perception that he is a dolt.

P.S. I also have no idea who that Rizzler kid is.
Rizzler is a "social media influencer".
He probably makes well over $100k a year as an 8 year old kid making videos. (Estimated net worth is $500k!)
Prior to seeing him on TV at the match I did not know he existed. I did an internet search for the info.
