U20 and U23 Trials Thread

Beau is a different sort of cat at his correct weight.

He’ll have D’Emilio of tOSU next. #9 on WS.

Beau has done what I expect so far to his opponents - end the match early.

Kent State 141 who went 2-2 in the MAC (Louis Newell)
Rutgers wrestler who went 7-9 at 133 last year (Devon Britton)
Pitt's backup 141 who went 4-5 last year (Ryan Michaels)

Now he's finally facing a NCAA qualifier level guy in D'Emilio.

Unless Clay Lautt has a BIG brother whose name also begins with C and also goes to UNC, he let himself go during the off season and is wrestling 97kg. Didn’t he pin Hidlay at 174 this season?

Long day indeed, they were 1.5 hours behind by 4:00.

Couldnt believe they opted to have the semis on the row of mats AWAY from the bleachers instead of right in front of stands.

Disagree completely. Sadly, Robbie Howard just can’t stay healthy. One more big injury, a transfer to another school and it’s up for grabs. Of course, Levi would benefit from a RS year. Who wouldn’t? However, 157 is a really weak weight and if Levi is ready and willing, I say let him wrestle!
Is 8 of top 12 returning really weak?

Rewatching Beau's matches today. He will always be pretty hesitant against length. His first opponent while not a world beater, was extremely long and Beau looked super hesitant in the first. Stylistically, he's always going to be a reattacker who picks his spots very carefully. So if we're looking for him to fire off shot after shot and score a ton of bonus next year, we'll probably be disappointed, even at 141. That being said, the hesitation we saw to shoot will definitely drop a bit at 141, which I saw at 143. Similarly, the size/length differential will result in more close wins than losses that he was taking last year (and as it's been mentioned 141 is cleared out)

His pin of the Pitt backup 141 is his ideal match, he took the opponent's aggression and turned it into his own cradle. It's similar to how he pinned Van Ness in 20 seconds in 2019. He does seem to be using the bow and arrow a bit for exposure points ... hopefully we see that on top in folk next year.

Someone made this comparison before and I like it. Luke Pletcher dropping to 133 from 141 was probably a good comparison. There will be a lot of 5-3 wins against non NQ level guys for Beau next year but the difference is, he'll be able to do that to Top 5 level guys. Mind you, Pletcher was Top 4 twice in very deep 133 classes.

Also final consideration, the 2nd to 3rd year in the room is often when we see some of the biggest jumps from PSU hammers. Saw it from Lee and RBY. Both went from very good (mid AA level guys) to WOW (national champs) Zain (though that might have been more physical lol) would never lose again. DT/Ruth visibly improved. Nolf, Nickal were damn good as RS Freshman but they seemed to be totally new animals as RS sophomores. That was the year Bo suddenly became the "I can pin anyone" wrestler.

So Beau has so much going for him:
1. The 2nd to 3rd year jump we often see in the PSU room
2. 141 clearing out completely (to the point Cole Matthews is #1 on WrestleStat right now)
3. It is probably somewhat of a huge mental relief to finally be wrestling 141 after wrestling up for years basically

I go back and forth on it. I think he would definitely AA next year and I’d love to see him compete. If he redshirts though I think he can be a 4 time champ. We probably don’t need his points next season but might need them in a future season. I’m sure Cael will make the right choice even if us in the peanut gallery don’t agree.

Yep. Cael has a pretty good track record in making good coaching decisions. (I'm competing for the understatement of the year award.)

From what I can tell, the following wrestlers are still alive.

Championship bracket: Bartlett (65 kgs), Joe Lee (74 kgs)

Consolations: Evans (65 kgs), Barraclough (74 kgs), Matt Lee (74 kgs)

Great it keeps our elite wrestlers going but really never see it being a big fan draw unless it a big event like world and olympics or the trials for these. Like soccer for for those in the USA

It's also great because it's the preferred style for just about every athlete I've ever heard answer a preference question--keeps them motivated, so we can still watch them do folkstyle too.

Do you guys also post about how much better American football is on soccer forums? Just curious. ;)

I think this interview is free:

Definite LOL moment near the end when Alex mentions his opponent trying something tactical against him that his training partners do very well....

Anyone know who the interviewer is? Says she's a PSU Alum. I wish we had more women in wrestling media, honestly.
