Dual streak

Penn State can and should move up the ladder this season. I think the team is at 46 right now. Right?

Whoa, those are some impressive stats. Thx for posting. Some things that jump out to me:
(1) OSU — wow. Just wow. Talk about a true dynasty.
(2) Iowa under Brands 08-12 — holy! I didn’t remember them being THAT dominant. No wonder the Iowa fans adore TnT. And no wonder it’s been hard for them to process less success and tolerate a new king of the hill since wrestling was reinvented in 2012.

I’m curious how many undefeated seasons culminated in an ncaa title. Dmm53, does your stat book show that?

do you know if the iowa streak included a "tie match?"

when did the criteria for a dual W come into play?

I think the dual part came into play from the thread title (“dual streak”), and the W part came from the first sentence of the original post:

How many more do we have to win a row to break the streak? ...

From those two clues, we can deduce this thread can be about the win-streak record and is not expressly limited to the unbeaten-streak record. :)

You may think I’m crazy but there is a chance Gavin could be back and in the lineup by then. Seen the tweet, and I’m hearing he along with supporting cast are extremely confident that he will be back in January and back on the team. I’m assuming he will have to prove himself again but in my honest opinion, it’s realistic he could make the run out against tOSU.

Gavin’s the real deal on the mat, we can certainly use his talent!

Misplaced adoration. Gable was on the staff for most of that streak. If anyone tries to tell me it wasn't Gable that was responsible (along with the double recruiting classes) for the success, I'll direct them to what TnT have done since Gable left the staff (i.e. have not won an outright B1G or even a share of an NCAA title).

Who said tOSU has the better wrestlers on any given night. You missed my point.
I think you missed his joke

That is, even if they had better wrestlers, he’d be perfectly okay with us fluking out a win

I know you hate Brands but this is factually incorrect, Gable was only a member of the coaching staff during Brands’ first year at Iowa. He wasn’t a part of the coaching staff during the three national championships.

OSU had ties in 1963 and 1964, and F-T already noted Iowa's tie. This is a stat that, I'm sure, Coach doesn't care much about, but does measure success, so it is representative of all that Cael and Co. have accomplished. Fans will use it as a metric for comparison's sake, though there are era differences. Some teams were wrestling in the low to mid-20's dual-wise, as recently as 2008...Iowa had 24 and 23 in 2009 and 2010, respectively, if my math is right. Today, PSU is wrestling 14 or so each season.

Iowa's most recent streak is the most impressive. Since over 100 schools dropped wrestling, the top wrestlers have been more concentrated in the remaining schools, making a streak more difficult to put together, especially with the reduced scholarship money.

Sure. He was a "special assistant" to the AD until he retired in the fall of 2010. What were his duties?

And I don't "hate" Brands. I just think what he did to Virginia Tech was scummy and know that he hasn't won anything outright without Gable on his staff (officially or unofficially). I guess you think that the fact that Brands losing streak began the season after Gable retired is just an odd coincidence, too.

Here's my favorite Dan Gable quote, from March 2011:

"There is a perception that this is a little niche sport, just a little sport popular in Iowa and Oklahoma. That perception has to change. That is my mission. When I get that done, I'll have outdone myself again."

I'm not sure that Gable did it, but the perception has changed since he uttered those words, beginning within a couple of days when Iowa came in third at NCAA's and Penn State and Cornell were above them.

You’re reaching, Gable wasn’t on staff nor involved with the development of the team. Yes, coincidence when great wrestlers graduated and Cael took over PSU. You hate Brands, you chime in with your hate at every opportunity you get.

What fan base has the streak for most years crying and accusing the winner of cheating?
Pitt football or Iowa wrestling? A whole lot of similarities. Iowa has 23 team national championships and Pitt football claims 23 national championships. Pitt football used to be really good and Iowa wrestling used to be the best. Pitt football is plenty bitter that they are now irrelevant and Iowa wrestling is plenty bitter that at best they currently are a distant third best. Pitt football has given up on having a team motto and Iowa has adopted "wait until next year' as its team motto. Pitt believes the reason they suck at all athletic endeavors is because of Penn State and Iowa knows the reason they have to annually wait until next year is because of Penn State.

Only significant difference between Pitt football and Iowa wrestling is Iowa wrestling averages 4 times the number of fans attending their events than Pitt football acknowledges after calculating their attendance with the Pitt inflation factor.

Brutal! :D

What fanbase has the highest % of wrestling threads that turn into Iowa bashing? If you are reading this you are in the right spot!

Hey, we know you can't resist trying to stir things up here on this board, but why don't you check out the Teasdale thread on HR? It's just the most recent example of the open, corrosive bitterness of a frustrated fanbase that makes HR such great entertainment. In comparison, this here thread is mere child's play, and not nearly as much f**.

There are many of us that don't like Iowa bashing or anyone bashing. Some of what sounds like bashing may just be "friendly" rivalry talk. Iowa is a great program and we love having a rivalry with you, OSU, tOSU among others. When true bashing (and not just rivalry banter) happens, many of us PSU fans cringe. Our wrestlers do such a great job of representing PSU on and off the mat, that it hurts to see that undermined. My comments are not specific to this thread--more of an overall comment based over the years, including posts by some PSU fans on HR. Iowa is good for wrestling and we enjoy competing against you!

If Teasdale was still at Iowa and left for "health" reasons what kind of thread would get rolling here?

Completely agree and it works both ways. There are about 4-5 guys over here that constantly go out of their way to bash Iowa any chance they get, even when the thread has nothing to do with Iowa. I don’t consider it friendly rivalry talk, but they do talk about Iowa almost more than they talk about PSU.

I think your head is entirely in the sand about Gable's second stint at Iowa. First, he is on the staff for Tom's first year. Then when they bring aboard Terry, Gable "leaves" the staff and becomes "special assistant" to the AD with no public definition of duties for several years. Do you thinking he was working with the basketball program on free throw techniques and the intricacies of the 2-3 zone when he was the "special assistant"? Maybe filing papers in the AD's office? C'mon, man. Either you are entirely gullible or you are being disingenuous.

I agree that it goes both ways. Unfortunately all fan bases have those who go over the top in knocking other programs. But, they don't bother me as much as when a PSU fan goes over the top in bashing another program. It just doesn't reflect well on PSU. If an Iowa fan doesn't reflect well on Iowa. . .well, that doesn't particularly bother me. The thing is that most fans of most programs are very good sports, the silent majority!

Not really, I never saw him in the room or at any of the banquets but then again you probably know more than I do being a PSU fan and living in PA. In my opinion, it has more to do with losing Schwab, Zadick and Hand than losing Gable but obviously I don’t know anything.

So when Brands said he talked to Gable "every day" when he was the "special assistant" he wasn't being truthful. Or maybe they talked about their favorite soap opera.

But it's a nice tip of the hat to Schwab, Zadick and Hand to say their loss was more important than Gable's. On second thought, I think we are in agreement about your last five words above.

How many times have you been to Iowa City? Attended an Iowa practice? Meet? Just curious
