This list can't be accurate. How could they have had teams in the 50's and 60's when wrestling didn't debut in PA until roughly 2010?

Im starting to think to myself and the internet that there should be some era designations given out like the WWE has with the Golden, Attitude, Reality, etc. Other sports have these designations with modern, steroid, etc, etc

The wrestling today is nothing like the 50s and 60s when Ok State was on top. Obviously wrestling goes back further, but that post WWII era is where we got the start of so many records and names that shaped the future. Its really the beginning of what we have today.

You could argue that the 70s, 80s, and 90s were similar with technique and the grinding, alpha male, approach to training and wrestling. It also was part of the title IX downsizing and consolidation of the sport. Dominated by iowa of course, but this could be said to be the modern/golden era as its the foundation for so many techniques, coaching trees, training, etc.

then there is the era of the 2000s forward where the funk, increase in chain wrestling, flo's rise and film study, Olympic issues, etc etc. While PSU is dominating, one could argue this is the best brand of wrestling of the past 60+ years. That todays studs would/could be better than those icons of our youth. I dont know what to call this era, maybe because we are in it and to move on requires a team to take PSU down a notch consistently.

maybe TOM or flo have thought/written about this and if they did and I didnt see fill me in.

Ill give this more thought from the wet, sloppy, cold beav later today and maybe ill have something to clean this post up after I come home tonight.

Solid post Dunke. In track and field the development between generations is plain as day because it's a time, height, or distance barrier that gets broken. In team sports the statistics are all relative to its competition and thus harder to see. But if you really follow the sport there's little doubt whether today's stud can beat yesterday's icon. Watch footage of Bobby Orr, and it looks like he's weaving through guys the found at a bar wearing skates for the first time. Bobby Orr would probably be a decent player today but not the best in the league.

In T&F, excepting, of course, all the women’s sprint records from 100-800. We can thank 1970s and 80s “medicine” for all of those

A BJ from Alexa would be my guess
My guess is he was trying for a 3 way with Alexa and Siri!;)

Yesteryear's athletes like Bobby Orr with equal access to all training opportunities available to today's athletes would in my opinion still be elite.

How many times have you been to Iowa City? Attended an Iowa practice? Meet? Just curious

Does that even matter? What was Gable doing during the time he was "special assistant" other than working for the wrestling program? It was a charade.

How many more titles does Cael need to win before Gable's "special assistant" role is no longer relevant?

I figure once Cael starts to close in on 15 Gable's role as "special assistant" is going to become more and more relevant.
1. Well you know those first 2 were really Dan's.
2. Those 3 that Tommy won were really Dan's.
3. If Cael stays with it long enough to get to 20 there will be an effort to credit Dan with JRob's championships.

Don't forget Smith's 2 titles in 2005 and 2006 after Gable transferred Mocco to Stilly.

Exactly. The tune will change entirely when Gable's mark gets challenged - without even the blink of an eye. Wild Turk and Chillin will be here defending Dan's honor and saying the 2008-2010 titles were not Tom's, really. I will say I will agree with them at that point - unless Tom wins something without Gable's real life shadow throwing shade.

He has that one co big10 championship and he owns the midlands.:D

Q - Who' the better coach Lombardi or Belichick?

A - They were each the best in their respective eras.

Q - Who is the best head to head, who's team would beat who's, ....?

A - as weasily as it sounds we'll never know and if you gather more than three non-homers in a room, I guarantee disagreement.

Cael is the best of his era, with no room for discussion. He faces some pretty awesome competition from some legendary coaches at tOSU, OSU and Iowa, and it still isn't even close.

Gable was the best in his era hands down, but that is the past, and this is the present.

You might want to rethink your Belichik analogy. A coach that has actually been caught cheating multiple times.

We'll run the table this year but the streak will end next year.

On balance an interesting record for the program and an indication of the magic of the Cael years but it will fade to a curiosity and just a tertiary reference point to all of the national championships. Heck we don't care that much about conference championships anymore. Team and individual Nationals rule the day. And these are good days indeed.
Exactly how can you be certain we'll lose next year? This could be the lineup. We'll lose two great ones, but this lineup looks tough to beat if some of the freshmen pan out. That might actually be a better dual team than tournament team next year with less individual firepower at NCAAs but more balance:

125 - Teasdale/Teske
133 - RBY
141 - Nick Lee
149 - Berge/Verkleeren
157 - Joe Lee?
165 - Cenzo
174 - Hall
184 - Shak/Brooks
197 - Beard
Hwt - Cassar?/Seth Nevills

Nice post...and a good early guess at the line-up. I see a couple of different guys at two weights, but that's a discussion for another day.

I believe there is a lot of general discussion of Berge moving up to 157 next year. Could that be on of Roar's weights he sees different. And would Joe Lee RS then? Is he a grey shirt this year, I forget?

AFAIK, Joe has yet to enroll, so his clock hasn't started yet.

Would be cool if Cael took the team to Midlands during the off year when we don't face the Hawks. Sort of to let them know if they don't want to come to Happy Valley, then every third year we're stealing your Midlands trophy.
What would be even more cool (and about as likely) would be if Cael said "I didn't come here to beat Iowa."

Oh yea Gable was a great wrestling coach but Cael is just on a whole other level about wrestling and in life...Hard to explain on a message board...2 great coaches for sure but Cael is just an INCREDIBLE human being....Not sure how well you know him....Not taking nothing away from Gable though..But they do have 2 completely different styles of coaching..Lets just say that....

Joe Lee is so under the radar. HR already planning post Cenzo and Hall thinking we’ll have holes there. I’ll take a Joe Lee at one of those weights after training for two years with DT, Cenzo, Hall, Bekzod, Casey, etc, etc.
