Next year?

There are soooo many variables right now that trying to predict a lineup is nearly impossible. What do Carter and Brooks do? If Brooks goes 197 limited reps, sure, but if Carter is going 74kg is he just going to take an ORS? If they both ORS does Levi take the Zain bulk plan. Is Howard healthy? Are there transfers in/out? Which freshman are ready to go next year? (I don’t think any of them, but Kasak could go 141 in a situation where Beau wasn’t there). Does Kerk take an ORS? Just too many question marks.

Hell, theoretically Shayne could make the U23 team at 65kilos and ORS. This far out it’s so hard to say anything with any
Yea, but when do guys enter the portal, after season or after semester?

Here's our team right now

125 - Steen/Howard
133 - Loser of Steen/Howard or Davis (I would be shocked if we wrestle Davis as a freshman, especially since I don't think he's a big 125 even let alone 133)
141 - Bartlett/Kasak (both have ORS and regular RS, both have a age group medal)
149 - I believe Shayne (assuming 2020 criteria applies) earned an ORS with his Top 3 finish
157 - Barraclough/Haines (Haines has regular RS and ORS assuming the Top 3 finish still applies)
165 - Facundo (has Olympic redshirt due to age group medal)
174 - Starocci (has Olympic redshirt because he's a 3x Champ and U23 medalist)
184 - Brooks (has Olympic redshirt and regular RS lol)
197 - I'm not sure we have anyone feasible here but maybe Brooks moves up
285 - Kerkvliet (has regular redshirt, Olympic redshirt because he's a age group medalist and Top 3 at NCAAs)

My dream line up is Starocci and Brooks bump one, wrestle a truncated folk season and we add Shane Griffith for 174.

Did you forget the WVU transfer(Ryan Sullivan) at 33 or has something changed there?

I don't play the "what's next year's roster look like?" game, at least not this early. As has been pointed out, it's too early and too many things can happen (RS, Oly RS, injury, transfers (in or out), early departures, etc.). I will say for the record that I'm generally not a huge fan of the transfer portal and would typically prefer to go with the guys on OUR roster, even if we potentially give up a few points by doing so. Now, that said, if you have a guy who's forced out of another program, who has serious issues with his present team/coaching staff, who can't win a position (ala Michael Beard), etc., then I suppose I'm OK with a wrestler who approaches US about the possibility of coming on board without much/any scholarship money.

It's fair to have concerns with serious shoulder injuries, particularly those which have required multiple surgeries, but that said, do you have to be insufferable ALL OF THE TIME? Howard appears to believe that he'll be back and that he'll be healthy. It wouldn't be the first time anyone's come back from shoulder injury and been near the top of their game. Even if you're convinced that he can't/won't, I repeat, do you have to be insufferable all of the time? He's a kid, a kid who's on the team and who's worked very, VERY hard to contribute. Shut your yap and give it a break (or at least tone it down a bit, since I'm not the board police and don't generally approve of censorship for those who probably are PSU fans).

To go along with some others have said..I too HATE the portal. I wish is was the old rules. I’m happy we got Max and he was great but that was a crazy Covid thing. That being said I would have been happy with Beard and see what he could do.

As far as predicting next years lineup? I’m staying out of it. No clue..I do hope Carter and Aaron come back to go for their 4th whether it’s next year or the yr after.

2018 Redshirt
2019 2nd
2020 Olympic Redshirt
2021 2nd but Free Year
2022 2nd
2023 4th

Still has a year b/c of two redshirts and Covid year. Crazy thing would be him taking another Olympic redshirt next year, which he can do based on his World Team Trials placement, and then wrestling for OkSt in the 2025 NCAA tournament.
Daton Fix will be 26 yrs old for 2024 NCAAs. (March 11th BDay).

I find us completely punting in 2024 hard to believe. Could a big dog Olympic Redshirt? Yes.

Even tho literally all of our returning qualifiers have some redshirt available, I don’t see most of them as being ready to make a push on the senior level. Add in the Covid crap that has many guys already being things like 23 year old sophomores, I can’t imagine many guys want to add on another year of college.

The other reason I doubt it is because we could still win the title even if one of Brooks/Starocci redshirt. In years past, losing a champion was enough to cost us a shot at the title. So the punting decision hinged on 1 or 2 guys. Now we have enough fire power to still redshirt a champion and win the team title, whether it be with current guys, incoming recruits, or a portal addition.

Punting could happen, but it’s hard to believe 7+ guys want to redshirt at this point in their careers.

PSU is not punting next season.

Really ? I thought they were done !! This Covid stuff is hard to track !!! I stand corrected if that is the case and probably change my whole argument. Can someone put a list of the top 3-4 All Americans that are returning next year. I seriously can’t figure out who comes back and who doesn’t. I guess I forgot Vito took an Olympic Redshirt for the Covid year. He will be 24 next year. Sheesh.
Wrestlestat is great for checking eligibility.

I’ll give it a go

125-Robbie Howard
133-Evans/transfer. Davis redshirts
141-Bartlett
149-SVN
157-Levi Holds the weight for one more year
165-Facundo
174-Starocci or Barr
184-Starocci or Barr. I think Barr will go as a true freshman. The lineup just is better with him in it and I see him as a Levi level recruit. I’m not penciling him in to make the finals mind you but I do think he has the ability to AA
197-AB
Heavy-Kerk

This could be the best PSU team ever. If Robbie can stay healthy he absolutely can AA at a weight with many guys graduating. 133 is the 1 weight with a ton of questions and no great answer yet. If Evans can make the weight I think he will surprise a lot of people but I really don’t know if he can make 133. If he can’t then the portal needs to be scoured. I think Davis is going to be very good but I don’t think he will be ready to go as a true freshman. A year in the room will do wonders for him. 141 and up is stacked with national champion level kids except for Barr who like I said earlier has AA potential right out of the gate. Like Clay has mentioned though, there are so many unanswered questions at this point the biggest being what Carter and AB plan on doing. If they take an Olympic year then punting might be best. I hope it’s not the path they take though because with the recruits we have coming in it’s just going to create a huge logjam. Will be interesting to follow. My one wish above all for next year though is that Robbie Howard can stay healthy. I love that kid and can’t wait to see what he can do with a full healthy season

PSU just won the title by 55 points and only lose 2 wrestlers.

Who are the dominate teams anymore ?

Ohio St has all of their hotshot recruits, but could they really flip a switch and push for 115+ points next year ? Can only 1 year of deadlifts and tanning beds span that gap?

Cornell loses Yianni.

Iowa loses what’s-his-face who kept getting tossed to his back.

Oklahoma State is in shambles.

Missouri could be stacked, but they tend to have kids over seeded for NCAAs and lose on Thursday.

Iowa State will have some horsepower.

Michigan has [EDITED - Parris will be gone it sounds] _____________ ?

It may only take 95-100 points to win the team title next year, not the typical 125+

Does Cornell lose anyone but Yianni next year? They have Shapiro coming in at Yiannis weight I believe he is the real deal. They didn’t have past AA Loew and HWT Fernandez in this years tourney due to injury. I think Cornell if they get Shapiro, Loew and Fernandez back in lineup and Mizzou has everyone back I believe would be 2 and 3 in country if we have everyone back

Cornell will be good for sure. Shapiro should AA next year. Kid is incredible. Ungar and Cornella will keep improving. Foca is a finalist contender and Ramirez is good enough to be a high AA as well if he puts it together. Cardenas is a beast. I thought I heard that Fernandez might be done done but that could have just been internet rumor. That is a tough team

Mizzou will probably be even better next year as well. Zeke Seltzer should step in at 133 and Josh Edmond replacing Hart at 141. Both Elams, Keegan, Mauller, Mocco, Surtin, and Hawks are all back. 157 is the big question mark with Jacques graduating. They also have top recruit Clayton Whiting coming off redshirt at 184 who should challenge Hawks for the spot. On paper this is probably the second best team in the country but they never quite perform to seed at the national tournament

Is Loew back next yr for Cornell or is he out of eligibility?

I think Parris is done.

On HR, they said Ironside made reference to Ayala "hopefully being back" which made them worry about potential portaling at first (you know the Spencer incident) but then someone said, no no he's good, just injured. Somehow that was better news for them though. I'd be more alarmed at that if anything.

I was with many Iowa insiders at Nationals who tell me that Spencer is like Ayala’s big brother and loves him. The beef after the match was between Spencer and TNT for making them wrestle. Spencer was proving a point. Either way, they said all is repaired in that relationship but I can still imagine that some things aren’t always as they appear so I still don’t fully buy in to there being no issues there.

Is Loew back next yr for Cornell or is he out of eligibility?
Their website says that he’s a senior. Pretty sure he is done. Strong team but not much depth. If Fernandes doesn’t come back I don’t see another heavyweight listed on their roster.

I realize this thread is about next year but I noticed junior commit Zack Ryder just won his 3rd NYS title, this time at 189. He’s ranked above Barr, Sealey, and the Mirasola brothers on Flo’s most recent PFP list. We still need a HWY to replace Kerk but otherwise the staff appears to be loaded for bear in the mid-upper weights.

I have to start this by saying I really really don’t think BB goes down to 133. I don’t see any way he can make that weight but I’m just thinking about trying to put together the absolute best lineup possible and that might be him at 133 and Kasak going at 141. This works if BB can make 133, Evans can’t make 133, no transfer in for 133, and Kasak is as ready to go as I think. He had a pretty good season competing in open tournaments and I see him making another big jump next season. I give this option about a 1% chance of actually happening though and I hope it doesn’t but I love talking about all the different possibilities.

Ryder is going to be special. I think the plan might be for one of the Mirasola brothers (I forget which one) to go on the Cassar plan and wrestle heavy. If he can do that it solves a lot of problems and lessens the logjam in the middle to upper weights

Torn Labrum. I'm always amazed at all of the insiders over there who know nothing. He should be back but you know how shoulders go.
